Dunkel ist das Leben, ist der Tod!
2011 MOCAthalon entry for category "Figgy Karaoke" by team "Moist Towelettes".
About this creation
Moist Towelettes entry for "Figgy Karaoke" in the 2011 MocAthalon.

First movement from Mahler's "Das Lied von der Erde" ("The Song of the Earth"), after Hans Bethge's "The Chinese Flute", based on 8th century poet Li Tai Bai.

Performance by Rene Kollo with Leonard Bernstein and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.

1st Mvmt: "Das Trinklied vom Jammer der Erde" ("The Drinking Song of the Sorrow of the Earth"):

Schon winkt der Wein im gold'nen Pokale,

Doch trinkt noch nicht, erst sing' ich euch ein Lied!

Das Lied vom Kummer

Soll auflachend in die Seele euch klingen.

Now beckons the wine in the golden goblet,

But drink not yet, first I'll sing you a song!

The song of sorrow

Shall in gusts of laughter through your souls resound.

Wenn der Kummer naht,

Liegen wüst die Gärten der Seele,

Welkt hin und stirbt die Freude, der Gesang.

Dunkel ist das Leben, ist der Tod.
When sorrow draws near,

Wasted lie the gardens of the soul,

Withered and dying are joy and song.

Dark is life, is death.

Master of this house!

Your cellar holds its fill of golden wine!

Here, this lute I name my own!

To strike the lute and drain the glasses,

These are the things that go together.

A full goblet of wine at the right time

Is worth more than all the kingdoms of this earth!

Dark is life, is death.

The firmament is blue eternally, and the earth

Will long stand fast and blossom in spring.

But thou, man, how long then livest thou?

Not a hundred years canst thou delight

In all the rotten trash of this earth!

Seht dort hinab! Im Mondschein auf den Gräbern

Hockt eine wild-gespenstische Gestalt!

Ein Aff ist's! Hört ihr, wie sein Heulen

Hinausgellt in den süßen Duft des Lebens!
Look there, down there! In the moonlight, on the graves

Squats a mad spectral figure!

It is an ape! Hear how his howling

Screams its way through the sweet fragrance of life!

Jetzt nehm den Wein! Jetzt ist es Zeit, Genossen!

Leert eure gold'nen Becher zu Grund!

Dunkel ist das Leben, ist der Tod!
Now take the wine! Now it is time, companions!

Drain your golden goblets to the dregs!

Dark is life, is death.

Alternate look at the table.

Notes:

1) If you are wondering where the cellar of wine set is, I chose a John Muir-esque interpretation (which I hope, with some confidence, Mahler would have approved): the master is God, the house/cellar is the earth, the wine is God's beauty on it. No, I am not being lazy. I'm not known for holding back on my MOCs. Many of the poems deal with a lone wanderer in the mountains, even when addressing "companions".

2) A very small part of this entry was, inadvertently, built before the contest started: one vertical clump of the weeping willow was sitting around as a table scrap for 3 months and I realized it fit here. The judges will have to decide how to treat that. (And, again, I do not have enough parts to have done the willow properly, so this will have to stand as a concept.)

3) I am too much of a newbie to know the source of things, but the black fantasy tree is Nannan or Hans like. (I did not work from their pics, so I don't think it counts as previous work, but the style has been seen before.) My attribution to the ultimate source of this is implied, whoever you are.

4) For those not familiar, Gustav Mahler is, now, the most frequently performed and recorded composer of orchestral or chamber music (yes, more than Mozart or Beethoven, maybe combined for all I know). He was the towering bridge between the Romantic (Brahms) and Modern (Schostakowitsch).

Muchas gracias to the judges and Sterlings for organizing this soul wrenching shindig.

Oh for the love of Pete, just give credit already! LMAO I think you're a word that would get moderated for even mentioning that a fraction of the tree existed before the contest and unless it was the entire tree it certainly did not warrant a DQ. Does that mean that if two bricks were stuck together before the contest I have to grab two different pieces? Anyway, I guess the point is moo (like a cow's opinion, it doesn't matter), but that's my 2 cents. You fought the good fight and threw down some great creations; I'm liking your idea that you mentioned earlier, it would be a riot!~H

Don't be too hard on yourself Tom - this is a beautiful build in its own respect and you've had perfect scores with all your other entries. I don't think there's anyone else in the games that can say that.

Apologies to my team. I am a weak man. I knew I was doing wrong, but could not overcome my desire to include my weeping willow idea here. Fortunately, I have no other relevant table scraps to seduce me.

Quoting Kevin J. Walter It's regretable to do this - love the creation - but we have to DQ you, caused by breaking of the rules - no hard feelings and in my opinion an act of honor and honesty to mention that a small part was built before - Score = 0
I can live with that. Thank you for taking a stand on your principles.

Actually, this one was computer generated, because I'm sick of it. Ironically, this one would have been the easiest to do by hand. Simple shapes in grayscale.
