Many small MOCs to make one big MOC!
Minifig-scale wharf, nordic style.
About this creation
The main building is inspired by the small boat-wharf in Elsinore, Denmark.
The fishing boats are scaled (1:45) models of danish and german North Sea cutters.

The red "krabbenkutter" is from the 1950´es. The blue cutter is more modern. -maybe from the 1990´es. -although based on the same original design.
Both are wooden cutters.
The red one is on land in order to receive an overhaul and a new paintjob. The blue one is brand new, and will leave the wharf soon...
One could say; "Coast of Elsinore, 15:30, tuesday, 11th of July, 1995".

If the layout has a "backside", then this is the closest thing to it. The layout was build to be observed from all sides and angles, but for now, this side has the least "action".

The entrance to the wharf, seen from a minifigs eyeview.
This MOC was prepared for an exposition close to Bilbao, Spain, and was shown to the public on the 2nd and 3rd of April 2011. -Thereby also making it my second oficial HispaLUG participation.
Here you can se the modular buildup of the base.
It meassures 96 x 145 studs (yes, that´s right; 1 stud longer than 3 large baseplates put together)

More detailed views of the boats and cars can be seen in the "Many small MOCs" presentation here on MOCpages!
http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/254960
...
Now, let´s have a closer look at some of the many details and activities embedded in the layout!
Lots of minifigs working here!

One of the central scenes is the unloading of a ship-motor.

Another of the many small secenes with things happening; during the painting of the old cutter, some paint spills on the poor worker... Not the best photo-quality, sorry!

Showing here are a couple of old retired fishermen, enjoying the autumn of their lives. They also take care of a small boat-hire business.
Trash is collected and controlled, and drums neatly stacked. At least everything seems to be in order here!

Big dust collector and an air-compressor.

Oops... A drum seems to be leaking some icky green stuff! Not good!

The watchdog seems to be momentarilly distracted from watching the entrance to the area.

Some kids playing with an old boat in the sand. -I suppose that skeleton pirate is made of plastic. (yep, it is; ABS!)
The sand on the beaches in Denmark is very light grey, almost white, so the LBG Lego plates are not too far off! Unlike the water, which would be better reproduced with trans-green plates and tiles. Alas, I dont own even a single one...

Summer, sun, girls. Works for me!

Just a view of the passing trafic on the street-side.
...
The roof of the main building can be lifted off easily, to allow people to see the fully detailed interior.
-This is best viewed from the "backside" of the layout, so there is actually something to see from all sides of this MOC.
A peak through the partially removed roof.

Inside, work has begun on a new boat.
Notice also the portal crane which can travel all the length of the building. -and its controls hanging in a cable.

A view of some of the machines in the workshop. Most are for cutting wood, but there are also machines for working in metal.

Table-saw, lockers, -even a resting area with a coffee machine.
Notice the dust-aspirators. Personal- and environmental protection is largely observed and upheld...

Water closet.
For the moment squeeky clean!
Somebody has a brown frog to spare¿?
...
Lastly, a random view of the MOC;

Trivia;
Elsinore (Or "Helsingør" as the natives spell it), is the town with the famous Kronborg castle, famous from the Hamlet story by Shakespeare. ("Something rotten in the state of Denmark"). It has around 50.000 habitants, is situated some 40km to the north of Copenhagen and is the closest point to Sweden, with only a narrow strait of 4km of water between the two countries.
I grew up some 12km from this town, went to high school and university there too. Later I lived in the center of the town for some 5 years, before moving on to Spain.
Thanks for watching and commenting!

Incredible detail! For me, this MOC represents all that is best in LEGO modeling: superb architecture (both land and marine), excellent play value, and tells a real story, or rather, a host of integrated stories. This is what I wish Santa could bring me. |

Again an amazing job, congratulations. Do you keep all your models ? Or do you take them apart after having taken pictures ? You must have quite a museum now ... Cheers, Dirk
Thanks Dirk! I keep NONE of my models, ever. Everything is taken apart quickly after presentation on internet. Only this BIG moc (and the Cutty Sark) made it to LEGO expositions, but was taken apart immediatly after the show.
I have very few parts, so "recycling" is a necessity. Sere my collection here;

That's what your MOC did to me ..... Brilliant. I love it. When i am done with my Dodge then will it be my next project.... Building a harbor.....
You inspired me. |

This is... Very, VERY well done! No comments i could make would really give this build full credit. I have to mention the truck though, perfect colour scheme i must say. My racetrack is large too but smaller than your build here and also a lot simpler. I HAVE to envy this! Greetings from jutland by the way. |

Thanks again to ALL of you, for the nice comments!!! Much appreciated!
Many ask about the time spent on the MOC: It took 2 month to prepare, building at a relaxed pace. As this was build specifically for an event, I started out early to be sure to make the deadline. The MOC was around 90% finished in just one month. (-when I saw I would have no problem making it on time, I let it kind of sit there for almost a month before finishing it.) Enjoy the photos, becuase the MOC is already totally dismantled! ;-) |
