Bard slays Smaug
So I decided to open this one with the artistic shot. Here we have Bard the Bowman slaying the dragon Smaug (with the black arrow) on the edge of Lake Town. This is my first creation based off of J.R.R. Tolkien's: "The Hobbit" and I'm reasonably pleased with how it turned out. However, my inspiration for this creation actually came from playing the Lake Town level in The Hobbit computer game (sad but true). For the record though, I like the book fifty times better then the game; I was just impressed with how the game portrayed Lake Town, so I wanted to do a MOC with Lake Town in it. Surprise! The build itself, though it may appear simple, is actually one of the most complex I've done so far (with the exception of the Monk's Cell). The two Lake Town buildings are almost entirely "snotted" and "studless" on the outside which takes some doing. And once again (like in 221B Baker Street) I had just enough brown pieces to capture the look I wanted. There is one thing I wish I hadn't forgotten though, and that is the thrush that tells Bard of the dragons weak spot. Oh well, too late now. I probably spent a good ten hours designing and building this small MOC, so I hope you Enjoy! Thanks, Ian
About this creation

A picture of the entire build.

Bard preparing to fire the black arrow (I used a black Lego bow to included this important detail) and thus slay the dragon Smaug.

Smaug!

The tip of Smaug's tail emerging from the water. Oh, and if you are wondering why the water is black in some places there are two reasons. The first reason is that I ran out of flat blue pieces (that shade). And the second is that I wanted to have shadows, which is what I used the black for.

Lake Town minus the figures.

The flaming building.

At first I debated including this picture because of it's poorer quality, but in the end (obviously) I decided to post it. If you look closely you will see the flames reflected on the roof. And I added the 1x6 cross board, because I ran out of 1x4 brown flats, but I like how it turned out. I intended this building to be the back of a warehouse so I think the board adds to the affect.

Bard the Bowman mini-fig.

Quoting Raymond Hanus Certanly one of your best. I am reading the book and this is still my second favorite scene! P.S. have you seen my Barrels at Laketown? P.P.S. Have you heard about my (comming soon) GREAT MICRO-SCALE QUEST CONTEST?
Yes I saw your Barrels at Lake-town, nice work! I think I even commented on it.

Really good, my only complaint is that I think Smaug was red.

Hey Bard! Thereís a patch in the hollow of his left breast thatís a bare as a snail out of its shell! Any ways, thatís what the little guy said! I think the setting takes the spotlight in this MOC. You really captured the look. You miserable tub thumping lake man! Attack!

A very good representation of the death of Smaug. The only critique that I have is that Smaug should be a red dragon with a gold belly. However, given the rarity of such dragons, I fully understand why your Smaug isn't red and gold. Somehow, I've always visualized Bard to look like your representation. Good job! Keep 'em coming!

I really like the design of this, but there was one detail that you missed, Smaug was red, other than that it is a really good moc.

Fantastic as always, Ian. But I think putting the pics in LARGE format would have worked best. Your best LOTR Moc so far. 5/5!

Genius! My favorite LOTR creation of yours! It is hard to tell how amazing this is from the main picture, but WOW! Such detail and awesome technique! Smaug is perfect, and I love how you attached him to the water. The whole thing is balanced out so perfectly, and Smaug's fire adds a lot to the vignette. Long live "Hobbit" MOCs! Great work Ian! One of your best.

There is so much to say abou this! Your Lake Town is pretty cool (especially the wooden houses) and Bard has nice hair. I'm really glad to see someone else creating HOBBIT MOCS out of his own imagination before the movie starts! We should add as many Hobbit creations as possible in this time! ;) PS: I'm going to add some "Battle of the Five Armies" MOCS, soon! It's one of my biggset projects. See ya! ~ Michael
