About this creation
If you guessed, 'a lame attempt at making a diorama out of the popular board game "Settlers of Catan,"' you are half right. I am actually pretty proud of this diorama, and I think it turned out quite nicely!
"Settlers of Catan is generally a two hour long board game of trade, purchase, building, and villainy. It is one of my favorite games, but, despite my epic strategies, I usually lose. If you have never played the game before, I pity you. It's very fun.
I had originally thought that I would construct the entire hexagonal board out of Lego. Yeah right. I'll just say there's plenty of other talented people with enough pieces out there to do that themselves. I could only construct two of the 37 board pieces. Nevertheless, the resulting diorama, featuring the hexes "Sheep" and "Ore" has a nice artsy feel, and the varied scales make the dio an interesting piece to look at.
The "Sheep" resource hexagon. Featured here are a shepherd minifigure, and the infamous robber depicted in minifigure form.
The "Ore" resource hexagon. Aren't my mountains awesome!?!
I couldn't leave out a port in my diorama. In the board game, ports play an important role in the acquisition of resources. The mini boat was also a fun build.

There are basically four different scales in the diorama: 1:1 human scale, minifigure scale, mini scale, and micro scale. The four red road pieces and the settlement are to scale with the actual wooden board game pieces. The minifigure scale adds a lot of life to the dio, the boat and sheep are sort of in between the micro and minifigure scales, and the landscape elements, the mountains and pasture, are the micro scale.
I always play as red in the board game, so red roads and settlement was a must.

The minifigures. The shepherd was great place to use those printed legs that came with the Series 3 indian chief, and I am very pleased with my stylized robber.
And, to end, a shot of the scenario in real life.

Trust me. It's way more fun than Risk. World domination never seems to work out for me either.
I wouldn't say its more fun, its just different. Risk is about world domination, Catan's about resource acquisition. Any of you played Axis and Allies, by the way?
Anyway, great MOC! (I'm always red too.) |

Very cool! I've never played the game before, but from the looks of it, it seems very similar to 'Risk'(which I always lose at :) Great work, Paul! Trust me. It's way more fun than Risk. World domination never seems to work out for me either.

Cool! I've never really played, but I have hypothetically. Great work. Is the cutlass from the new POTC sets? 'Played hypothetically.' You had me puzzling over that impossibility for a long time... Hmm... Anyway, no. The cutlass is actually from Brickforge. ($0.99)

You must be a long lost identical twin! :) (1) I love Settlers of Catan (2) I always play as red (3) I loved devising epic stratagies and (4) I always lose. As always, you have done a marvelous job. Go Catan!! Hahaha! You're right! We must be twins!

It's funny. I saw this and thought, "That looks like Settlers of Catan." One of the best games I've played. Great representation of the pieces! Next up, lets see what you can do for wood and brick! Keep 'em coming! |
