Bumblebee is my seventh Lego Transformer, and he really transforms! His robot and 2010 Camaro modes are based on the 2007 movie "Transformers" by Michael Bay.
About this creation

Sometime in March I took this shot. I thought I was getting close. I had the basic form of the robot, and the car was coming together. I thought I was about 75% done…Little did I realize I still had two months' work to go.

Modifications: I used several stickers on Bumblebee. I used the light gray portions of the stickers from the AT-TE Walker to cover the dark gray of the Bionicle hinges on his shoulders and hips. I also cut two small portions off a flexible tube to make his head. To make the rims and wheel spokes silver, I used Testor’s model paint on black wheels.

You can see more of “the crew” by clicking here.
Building notes: I started out in December 2010 building the new Camaro from the 2009 movie Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, but within two nights I realized that was not working for me. After some cogitation, I figured the reason was that I never liked that version of the Camaro! Once I switched to building the 2010 Camaro from the 2007 movie, I made better progress for a while.
Credit: Firas Abu-Jaber deserves credit for many areas of my Camaro, including the size and scale, the front, the back fenders, and the wheels. In other words, I looked at his several times while building mine - even though he built the new Camaro, it was still helpful to look at his.
Time: Over two years ago, I knew this would be a future project, so I started collecting yellow pieces. This MOC has been under construction from January to May 2011. I never tried to count the hours involved, but I would guess over 50, less than 75.
Changes: After my wonderful wife took pictures of car mode, that night I made a few slight changes. I fixed the car back (no more asymmetry hiding above the hinges), and switched the clear “cheese slopes” by the headlights into black slopes.
Firsts: First 16-wide vehicle; first Bricklink order; first project over 2 months; first time in almost three years to not post monthly on MocPages.
Thanks: God, for my fourth child, born in the middle of this project. My wife, for her endless patience. Lego, for existing. Michael Bay, for the coolest looking robots. Ever.

Yes, be a Transformers nut. Watch the movie endlessly. Transform them in your dreams. Buy the toys. Practice with the toys. Time yourself with the toys. Did I mention be a Transformers nut?

Are you thinking of ever making Optimus Prime?
Yes. I've put that project in my file labeled, "Someday, when I'm rich and famous and can afford massive Bricklink orders of dark blue and lots of chromed bricks."
Quoting Sam Knavel
BTW, You should make him a little shorter thoguh, he is taller than Ironhide! :)
Er, yes. I'm sure I don't have to explain scale to you, though. :)
Quoting andros tempest
If I was to knock it at all, it would be that the robot mode proportions seem slightly off, compared to the reference picture the upper body is a little short compared to the length of the legs.
Yes, there are lots of little proportional issues I ran into throughout the project. The final result is a mix of compromises. Given a second chance, I would see if there were any way to lengthen all the main body parts, since he appears a bit squashed/stocky to me.
Quoting Firas Abu-Jaber

at a distance I wasn't sure I liked the head design, it felt a little squashed up, but up close you can really see the detail. Overall, it's pretty good, I always give 5 stars to transformers that ACTUALLY TRANSFORM without cheating, and this one appears to do just that.
If I was to knock it at all, it would be that the robot mode proportions seem slightly off, compared to the reference picture the upper body is a little short compared to the length of the legs.
That said to achieve the transformation the proportions work and I'd be proud to produce something half as good as this. |
