Pantsir-style weapon on armoured vehicle
About this creation
This is my interpretation of an anti aircraft vehicle based on the russian pantsir S1 and tunguska M1/M2. The pantsir is armed with a quadruple(!) barreled 30 mm machinegun with a 1900 round payload and 4-12 missiles (depending on model type). The range of the machinegun is about 3000 meters and the missiles have a range between 10 and 18 km depending on choice of missile. For those who are interested, technical details not mentioned here and videos of the original vehicle is available elsewhere on the web.

The main gun is claimed to have a rate of fire of up to 5000 30mm rounds/minute but from what i see in the videos i would say that 'in everyday use' at least the rate of fire is about half that of the fierce GAU-8A (4500 rounds/minute) on the A-10 thunderbolt. Nevertheless it is still a formidable and VERY destructive weapon!

I added a .50 cal machinegun at the drivers hatch to engage infantry targets and light-armoured vehicles as well. Though the main weapon can engage ground targets it just seems like massive overkill to me when it isn't aimed at heavy armour.

The weapons 'platform' is my interpretaion of an amphibious armoured truck with top-placed air intake and exhaust pipe enabling in to drive through water depths up to just above the roof of the cab. It took all my grey sloping bricks and almost all of my grey regular bricks to build it. This also means that aside from the drivers cabin there is no real access to the interior of the vehicle. The top hatch only opens to reveal enough space for a minifig to stand on. The vehicle looks very short, tall and slim because i wanted it to be minifig-scale, still look somewhat like the original and also be usable in a city-environment. it is 8 studs wide and -exactly- fits into one lane on a road baseplate. Look out for your lamp posts though!

I don't know if the original features close proximity missile countermeasures but i decided that this one should have them and added those too. If things get rough, you run out of ammo to keep enemies out of firing range fast!

It is a tight fit but the top hatch opens without bumping into anything. When in 'parade mode' the drivers hatch clears the turrets easy but the machinegun has to be turned left to open it -grr-

Below are photos for comparison. To the left is a tunguska M2 and to the right the pantsir system mounted on a truck. The difference between the two systems is the radar types i believe. Also, the tunguska seems to be exclusively built as a tracked vehicle while the pantsir system can be mounted on any vehicle strong enough to carry its weight - tracked or not.

This should conclude my little series of military MOCs. I have plans to build an attack helicopter from the black bricks left over from this build and my jet but i'm not sure if i'll post it. I plan to build and post lots more than just vehicles of war :-)

Sure, use anything you like. I don't feel a particular need to claim copyrights to my designs :-) If you need help, let me know!

Thanks :-) Uhmm i build on the fly, so no instructions are available. I'll answer any questions you might have though! Oh, and this: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/321829 is my tracked version of this vehicle.

I don't know how I missed this one before! Wicked cool! The vehicle itself may be a bit small, but still an awesome design! 5/5!

Yeah, I agree with JS Can... the weapons systems look a little too heavy for the vehicle... maybe making the actual vehicle bigger might make it bigger. But still, I like the design and when you look a the individual details, it is very nice! Keep it up!

Quoting Green helmet spanish AFOL The only "but", in my opinion tracked vehicles have a greater mobility off road. Maybe a tracked vehicle for the future! Congratulations.
Thanks for your comment :-) I agree but i didn't have any parts for the tracks at the time. So i had to go with the wheeled pantsir-version :-(

Excellent design too. Very realistic and good description. The only "but", in my opinion tracked vehicles have a greater mobility off road. Maybe a tracked vehicle for the future! Congratulations.

Quoting JS Can I think the turret and weapons are too big for the actual vehicle and if you took a turn to fast you would be on your side.
Not to mention i found out it would land on its tail if the turret moved at the speeds of the actual vehicle :-) You're right, thanks! I actually didn't consider that until now. Maybe i should rebuild it some day soon? Redo the main machine gun and expand the base vehicle perhaps? It would involve a new PAB order though.
