Semi-SHIP Mecha Progress Log 2

About this creation
Probably my favorite mecha now, purely because I'm thinking up new techniques to design everything.

Sadly, I think I might have to go back on my claim of no exo-force click-joints for stability reasons, but we'll see.

Also, sadly, Pick-A-Brick seems to lack the part I need two of to complete the left leg so... uh... not sure what to do about that.

Anywho, without further ado:

Zettaizer's chest as currently designed. I'm going with classic black and either white or light grey as a base with red accents. Still working on the color scheme a bit.

My tribute to the great Gaiking! CHEST OPEN! ZETTAIZER! MAXIMUM POWER!

Backside. The dark grey is just a placeholder until I get more red parts. Still working on a way to incorporate thrusters into the backside. Will be using the hinge parts on each side for those, I think.

Because every super robot needs a set of wings, Zettaizer too has equip-able wings in the form of a jet.

It's a prototype design and a smaller adaption of Galaxy Shuttle which was too large and heavy to attach (even though, bizarrely, it was perfectly designed for such an attachment. The coincidental complementarity between Zettaizer's back and the underside of Galaxy Shuttle was so bizarre...)

Erm, excuse the little socket on bottom. Needed something to hold the torso up so the wings wouldn't topple it over backwards. Not a problem when attached to leg and no-leg-here-yet scaffold.

Showing how the two roughly attach. See how perfect it is? I mirrored it from Galaxy Shuttle's underside. Good coincidences mean good things :)

Jet by itself. More of a proof of concept than a final product. The final jet will probably be differently designed and colored. Thinking of calling it "Jet Hornet" as a pseudo-homage to the Stinger from Gaiking: Legend of Daiku Maryu.

Leg got redesigned shorter. Added a thruster to the back and wider "shin panel" to the front. Considering this the final lower leg design. Upper leg will probably be white to match the torso's white.

Camera died before taking this final shot so I had to use my cruddier iPod camera. Rough height difference between the WIP Zettaizer, Super Hub, and a minifigure. It's going to be a bit larger, roughly a foot tall.

Final Progress Log Thoughts
Zettaizer is my tribute to all classic super robot anime and especially a tribute to Gaiking, my new favorite anime. This is probably the fifth or sixth iteration of the torso and mainly to just get the Open Chest looking right. Interestingly enough, under certain light conditions and angle, the chest kind of resembles a face.

Zettaizer is a portmanteau of "Zetto Kaizer" (Z Kaiser). Named from the fact that it runs on a power source called "Zetto Waves" (Z Waves).

So far, I've run into a few problems while building this:
1. as aforementioned, the joints don't see quite as stable as I want so I may replace any number of them with stronger click joints
2. The torso isn't particularly sturdy. The way it's designed leaves it able to be taken apart easily (for storage?) but makes it feel very flimsy.
3. The way it's designed also means some of the greebling and the backside jet connector aren't attached too sturdily.
4. It's a big drain on parts. The reason I call it a semi-SHIP is because it's using lots of technic and angular bits as well as slopes and other things. It's supposed to be big and bulky and powerful looking but still sleek all the same. I don't have a huge budget or a lot of the parts that I need so it is, to some degree, a seriously huge investment of parts.

Anyway, comment?

It's great, even being just a WIP. The legs are very beutiful and retro looking, really reminding the older anime robots legs. About joints, the ball ones are good to sleek mechs and not for bulky mechs as this one. But as you may know, click joints seems to bulky the mech even more. So try to shrink the crotch area. Keep the good work!

Quoting Shadowa Heartfelt Instead of ordering pieces from PaB (Pick a Brick)try Bricklink. TONS AND TONS of natural and custom pieces and usually a LOT cheaper than PaB. Good Luck and this is starting to have some amazing progress.
I know of Bricklink but unfortunately in my experience with it, it requires money orders or paypal, neither of which I can use currently. It's... an interesting financial situation in my household, heh. Anyway, thanks and I'm glad you think the progress is amazing :)
