The archers fire the first volley at the approaching/defending enemy, then fall back to their regular firing positions. This gives the infantry an opportunity to attack while the enemy regroups. This is my theory, anyway. Of course, I'd rather drop a tachyon bomb then kick back with cold one and watch them suffer. But that's just me.
