About this creation
Built explicitly for Round II of the MocOlympics: Dave Shaddix vs. TheFisherman - You and What Army?
Now some thoughts:
I had the misfortune of drawing a terribly limited and unimaginative category in Round II, 'YOU and what army'. After chewing on the subject for a while, I decided to take a different approach to it and built something more interpretive than literal.
Although I believe the judge or judges who penned this category might have envisioned hundreds of minifigures standing on a plate next to a couple of hardsuits or mechs, perhaps arranged in a comedic fashion or poised to do 'epic battle', I again chose to discard the boilerplate expectation and cut my own path. I figure that if I am going out, I am going out swinging ...and on my terms.
I wish my opponent the best of luck.

Too bad about the technicality. This is a great build and I hope to see you in the 2012 MocOlympics! |

Hello Dave,
Great Build and I couldn't agree with you more about challenging yourself for the categories. This years MO's was my first time trying and I often felt that more creative builds were not awarded as they should have been (not only with mine but others). I think often time people are caught up in lighting, photography, long drawn out detailed stories, and multiple MOCs (not just components) for a single entry. I think the build should speak for itself and I think that you accomplished that very well and your MOC speaks volumes on the category. |

Quoting El Barto !
Yeah, dude, killer mosaic! You're like a machine putting those things together! But rules are rules, so my vote has to be with The Fisherman.
Barto - no sweat. In fact, since I clearly lost this one due to a technicality (regardless of subject), I withdraw my entry. No use wasting further time judging this. I've dropped group and changed titles to clear trace of the MOCO's. Thanks for your time and effort Barto! |

Quoting Dave Kaleta
Dave, So, this was a great take on the category. I totally understand about getting something you're not entirely pleased with and having to build in it. I'm disappointed that you didn't challenge yourself to try something more within the confines of the topic; a squid army could have been fantastic and right up your alley! Don't get me wrong, the mosaic is both lovely AND it fits the title of the category. I don't think you were in the wrong trying something outside the box, it fact, I applaud your thinking and ingenuity. All things being equal, I would judge your entry and your opponents as quite comparable. Here's the rub...
"Your entry MUST:
Be titled "MocOlympics (may be shortened to MO) round 2 "you" vs "Your opponent." You may title it anything you wish after that but that must be the opening of the title."
So, I want to thank you for challenging the status quo with your entry (which again, was great), but ultimately my vote goes to your opponent. ~Dave
Hey, no sweat Dave. It's been a fun two rounds. I feel the challenge IS NOT building for a category description, but in the departure from it and varying the theme a bit ...exploring the 'spirit of the title' if you will. Building an army, vehicles, weapons, etc. is no challenge at all. Truth be told, I have been itching for a little 'sci-fi action' lately, but I didn't like this forum in which to present it. Generally speaking, the MOColympics pushes people to build for unexpected categories and forces them to think out of the box. The downside is that it generally encourages them to build fast and sloppy as well, focusing more on storyline, humor and sig figs. As I said, I figured that I was going down this round as a consequence of my take on this category, but I am on my terms. Thank you Dave for your feedback and support.

Quoting The Fisherman
Very good build and an interesting interpretation. The topic however was somewhat more specific though leaves enough room for variation. I am curious of the judging. Now, where did I put my other 99 minifigs...
Like I said, 'limited'. I figure I pretty much handed you Round III, you could probably take a picture of your minifig collection and get there. Good luck in the next round. |

Because one could do lego mosaics with the appropriate software too, I am always a bit nervous when judging them. Truly, there is the opposite of greed looking at your theme... You were quite explicit on how you liked it ;-) But Hey, your take on the theme is maybe the best way to handle it and deserves my full support. It came out excellent! |

Dude that's really cool! I dig those flat, comic-style colours, I reckon mosaics have more impact like that rather than with skin tone gradations. Maybe just a personal preference. Best of luck with the judging! |
