What might living be like in the 22nd Century?

Where’s my 2 O’Clock?

Well hello, you must be the Stricklands right? I’m Luis Panache and I’ll be showing you around today on behalf of the owners.
As you can see, it’s a beautifully appointed 4 bedroom semi-subterranean dwelling. The Adley Hills secure estate is classed as ‘Ultra-secure’ by the Buro committee and has a 24hr dedicated security force along with roving automated intruder measures.

Do you mean mastiffs?
Why yes little man, there are mastiff class droids for your protection. Not to worry though, the estate hasn’t had a single reported crime or intrusion by night clowns in over 4 years. C’mon, let’s go inside!

And here we have the kitchen area. J33VES is fully capable of preparing all of your dietary needs using the aquamatic rehydrater and a powerstatic grill

Look he’s making a turkey right now.

Pop the tablet on the aquamatic, fire up the laser and….

Dinner time! J33VES is the automated serve-and-secure for this dwelling. He is available for all household tasks and non-lethal home security.

The bathroom is equipped with the latest in cleaning/ recycling units – the sonocare ‘X’ uses a combination of sonic pulses, focused microwave heat and anti-pathogen solutions to deal with all your mess. Want to try it for size?

Sure is comfortable honey!

The latest model cleansation as standard.

And here's the master bedroom! Luxury fittings throughout.

Hey kids, why don't you go and have a look at the other bedrooms while I chat to your parents?

As you can see, luxury dispensary items such as Rejuvenex, Detoxifate, Viagra VII and many others are available.

And the ultimate in comfort - 'Top Slumber' biogel sleep cocoons with nanite monitors and of course, full AR network access. Want to try them out for size while I show your kids the other rooms?

You know, this place is great, ideal even. Maybe it’s time we thought about another kid. We do have a license!
Oh really Joe, do you mean it?
Sure, why not? What would you like, boy or a girl?

Laura? Where….

Oh, no…. *BEEEEEEEP*

Ahh! Ahhhh….. Dammit, I hate coming out of AR.

I’m supposed to feel as rested as if I had slept, but I can’t recall what real sleep feels like. I can’t recall what a bed feels like. Just an approximation. Must be time for work.

Who just sleeps anymore? Why bother when the cradle will let you study or view anything, play games or do whatever you want to? I spent the whole night viewing homes I couldn’t afford unless I was a net-programmer, with an approxi family that I don’t know and a sports hover car I couldn’t drive. There was furniture. What would I do with furniture in here?

Two nights ago I ran through a mall with a sword. I recall the taste of the hotdog and onions I stopped for as clearly as I recall the resistance of the vendor’s flesh as I slashed at him afterward. Neither was real. Last night I watched old wildlife documentaries instead.

I don’t know if I have had a real hotdog since I was a kid. The extruded food polymers we are given seen to come in three types – painfully salty, nauseatingly sweet and crunchy. It’s all made from vat-farmed kelp. The colours change, I know they balance it with all the necessary ingredients for your diet, it’s free and it fills you up, but that’s all that can be said for it. I could take less cradle time, try and save the money for a real hotdog and a soda, but would it be any better than staying in the cradle and eating an approximation of a steak dinner and champagne?

My overalls are in the dispenser. Clean and vague. The material doesn’t flow or breathe, it’s all synthetic. I used to wonder if they cleaned mine and it came back or if they just allocated a size to each cubical. I gave up.

The lights are too bright again.

I passed a snooper in the corridor. They don’t need to make them so big. The tech they carry can be miniaturised, and they are already monitoring everything about you through the cradle. All your vital signs and bodily functions, all your viewing and interaction habits, all of your tastes.
I was told once that the snoopers and the guards are only there as a reminder. They already have us under control.

Sorry consumer, elevator is out of use. You’ll have to take the stairs. Don’t forget your respirator, pollutant warnings are high today.
Notes/ 4th Wall
No, I don’t just do funny.
As soon as I read my category I had two conflicting ideas for this. The clean and wonderful world of the future with ‘Jetsons’-like technology in the suburbs, and the dark, cramped, ruined world of so many dystopian works of fiction such as Blade Runner or Judge Dredd. The dark half owes a lot to inspiration from the Atlas games RPG Feng Shui, elements of the Matrix and The Fifth Element. Both sides owe a little to Robocop.
Which of the two visions of the future are we really heading for? Let’s put it this way – I haven’t got a jetpack yet, but I can hope.
Good luck to my opponent and everybody else in round 2.
Thanks for looking.

Hahaha, Utopia meets Dystopia, eerie, and fantastic, reminds me of when I dream and I am a starfleet captain surrounded by afrobabes, and then I wake up and its time for work!!! |

Oh. Yes! As I started going through this I thought it was going to be simply a pretty fun (and as imaginative as ever) build - then I hit the twist which I had not anticipated at all. Brilliant! Here's hoping you get another long run in the competition this year! |

The design of the cradle is appropriately sinister and my favorite part of the build. The white clam was also a nice piece use. Glad to see you on top of your game and look forward to your future rounds. |

I intentionally saved this for last, knowing I would want the time to fully take in the story awaiting me. Yeah. I have to echo Leda's sentiments of disappointment...that it ended! Brilliant pacing of an excellent storyline backed by high quality builds: the Delahay winning formula! Best of luck in the next round.~H |

Last time (in round 1) I complimented on the British storytelling skills in general. This time I want you to grab your phone, call Steven Moffat and tell him that you should be one of the next authors for season 7 Doctor Who. Really, there's nothing to criticise here. Too many good things to point them all out and I mean it. But thanks to them I'll read the story again in a few days. My vote you get by now. |

Most excellent story telling. Above everything else I love the AR-unit. The colours of the hovercar tend to give eye-cancer though. Or were they a hint that this was not real? |

The story was so compelling I was completely caught up in it and kind of upset when it ended. I think after the MOs you should turn this into a series. As to the build itself, well its easy to see why you made it to the final round last year. |

Oh, what fun! Lol, this reminded me of the film Sleeper. I need to get me a hold of that Viag.. Oh, right.. Anyways the abrupt twist in the end with the AR was unexpecting and brilliant, giving that distant future a 1984 feel. But which is the reality I wonder? |
