Modular Boards
A set of three modular boards for a custom Heroica map.
About this creation
My custom heroica set-up is designed for replayability.
There are 8 quest objectives (marked with red tiles) placed among the three boards. Heroes are randomly assigned one quest each, plus a global quest any hero can complete. The boards are designed to be arranged randomly (on a 16x16 baseplate grid), with several locations on each side making a suitable connection to other boards.

Here's one arrangement:

another:

and another:

From the starting point, heroes are faced with a choice of three doors: the main castle gate, the underground passage, and the mountain pass.

Unfortunately, the Rat King holds a key, and the heroes need it.

Taking the castle path leads up to Gobin outpost on top of the hill.

Continuing past the Goblin outpost and descending the mountain (or taking the underground passage from the start) leads to the flaming cavern. Fire spiders, a fire scorpion, and an horror-that-cannot-be-named bound by the flames!

The golem lord has made his home in the Canyon of the Ancients, hewing out new minions.

Our favorite shopkeepers have set up business at the river crossing.

The Hall of the Gobin King.

The rear gate has been boarded shut.

The Goblin training center is holding class. Probably a good place to pick up a weapon!

A giant owl guards an egg. Or could it be a Palantir?

Where there's river lizards, there's gold to be found.

The most difficult quest is the long climb up the mountain, past the buzzards, to confront the Fire Dragon and get the golden sword.

For the Alien Conquest creature, you should use the hammerhead shark head from Atlantis. It's trans-red and a mouth fills the front of it. I've used this combination before and it works great!

I really have to know! Where does that horror-that-cannot-be-named come from? Is it Lego or did you use a non-Lego Part in your excellent build? Let me add to that: This work is truly amazing!

AWESOME!!! This is the best heroica item I have ever seen! I like how there are many aspects to the board, and 9 quests. How did you come up with this set? How long did it take to build?

Thanks. It is crowded; I would have liked to have spread it out over twice the distance, but then the game would take longer. It's not so apparent from the pictures, but the connectivity map is pretty similar to the standard games - most spaces have only one place to go forward/back, and I think it's about 6 spaces between path branches, and about 4 spaces between items/encounters. So the gameplay feels similar. I wanted to have places where one path crosses over another, and for that you need the top path to be about 6 bricks higher than the other, and so many of the paths are like staircases to get that elevation while still fitting on the baseplate. It would be interesting to rebuild on larger baseplates, basically tripling the non-tile scenery spaces, and maybe try rolling 2 dice for movement. The rat appeared in several sets, including Hogwarts Castle. link: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemIn.asp?P=50687&in=S
Quoting J Hinkel Great build! When I first saw your picture of it in the contest page I was worried that it looked a little too busy. But it looks exceptional seeing the details up close. I especially like the dungeon doorway under that castle. Where did you get the standing rat?
