A floating palace in microscale

I wanted to revisit the niche of microscale for some time, but I was hesitant to do so, because I never got any new ideas or the irresistable urge to put a brick to a new use... But I finally set down to it, as it was my last excuse to put off the construction of a large project I have been postponing for years...

The top of the island, the big round green bricks, are ofcourse from the Slave I. For a time I tried some non-circular configurations, but it was too tempting... making it symetrical was a lot easier! I started with this base and I still fell short of cool new ideas...

However, during construction of this palace I did find some cool new tricks! For example, I found out that a 1x2 tile can be fitted into a 1x3 arch! If you then sink the tile a plate (or two) below the floor, it makes an excellent micro-door! Far better than the 1x1 tile on a headlight brick as I did for the backdoor...

In set 7066 is a sweet, sweet light blue transparant tile-gripper-brick-thingy... I just had to use it as a window. Only though sheer blunt headedness I managed to stuff it in, but in reality it was far too large for my purposes and I could have made it myself a whole lot easier by using a bench-brick instead - like in the top front window...

The gate behind the main entrance was another bad idea... For one, it came far too late; it was really an after touch, the rest of the palace was already complete or as good as. You have to understand that this whole thing is quite flimsy; it can fall apart just by looking at it... But I had to take it apart, jam the gate in there, find a way to keep it tightly upright and rightly centerd, when I finally rebuilt the flimsy superstructure, it ended up with a crooked gate...

The last thing I built was the spike beneath the floating the palace. I was long set on the thought of building it studs down, because there are more angled roof-tile-bricks than upside down roof tiles... Making a tight connection proved easy by burying a technic pin inside the ring!

As for the long put off large project I mentioned in the top; I have started construction and am currently finished with the exteriors and started with interiors. The bridge is already completed... It will be the Starship Heart of Gold!

That's really nice! Nice use of slopes and angles to make the palace, looks very cool! I also like how you made the entrance seem like a "face". Excellent work! |
