The Battle of Blood River was fought in 16 December 1838 between the Boer Voortrekker, colonists primarily of Dutch descent who left British Cape Colony to settle in the South African hinterland, and the Zulu Kingdom during the Great Trek wars.
About this creation
The Great Trek was a massive exodus of Boers from British Cape Colony to the South African hinterland where they would found the "Boer Republics". Hostilities started when Zulu King Dingane murdered the boer delegation under Piet Retief and sending his impis (Zulu warriors) on night raids to Boer wagon villages. After an earlier Boer raid was defeated, a 470 man strong Boer force faces 10,000-20,000 Zulu warriors killing 3,000 of them whose dead turned the Ncome river red thus the battle was known a Blood River.
The Boers had used Laager formation taking cover behind wagons to protect themselves and combined with better weaponry were able to win the battle with only 3 light injuries.During a following battle King Dingane was overthrown by Boer-friendly Prince Mpande and was able to take the throne. The Zulu General Ndelela who fought at both battles was strangled by King Dingane because he refused to commit to either battle so that the Zulu monarchy could survive under Mpande as Dingane had no children.
Well there's your history lesson for today. Now Enjoy!
