Sweeden's most produced aircraft.
About this creation

Maximum speed: 1060 km/h (Mach 0.86)

Service ceiling: 15500 m
Rate of climb: 32.1 m/s
Powerplant: 1 x Volvo Aero RM2B turbojet producing 27 kN of thrust
Sweedish first generation fighter jet, popularly called "Flygande Tunnan", i.e. Flying barrel because of its barrel-like shape, is SAAB's most produced aircraft with 661 units built. It was fast and agile, in the words of its pilots "ugly duckling on the ground - in the air, a swift". If you want to know a bit more about this aircraft click here .
This moc should represent late model J29F that has the afterburner and "dog-tooth" wings. The fuselage is influenced and similar to the fuselage of João Eínon's small fighter jet Trovão . Obviously, it's longer and I added new wings and tail etc. I tried to capture the shape of the real Tunnan as best as I could, but with the imperative that it could fit a minifigure. So, here goes nothing...

The landing gear is not retractable, but I've included all the parts needed for the conversion in the LDD file.

All you need to do is select the parts from the top and move them away from the model and place the parts from the bottom onto the model. It's not going to be user friendly with the real model if anyone builds it but I can live with that.

Armament in those days was all about cannons and machine guns, since air-to-air missiles were almost useless. It's supposed to have four cannons in the nose, but they are well hidden... haha. :)

Cockpit view.

I always liked this aircraft because it looks so odd from the side. Note the big antena on top.
Feel free to comment and suggest any improvements, and as always use it however you like just give me credit for it.

The look is very close to the real thing, I think it could be longer: I see you´re wingspan is about 32 studs and the length is 24´ish. The real Tunnan is/was longer than its wingspan. Anyway, cool design, with a lot of nice ideas. I really like the shape of the wings.
I know. The length is 27-28 studs when it should be about 35 or so. The problem is I couldn't shorten the wings and keep the shape, and I got a bit lost with the tail part. It became too complex with too many pieces for a small model... In the end if it gives someone an idea to build a more realistic model then it was worth it.
Thanks for commenting both to you and Oscar. |
