MocOlympics round 3, Gabriel Thomson vs. Chas Irish
About this creation

Link to my opponent, Chas Irish

The catagory that Chas and I had to build for in this round was "Show me the money", a quote from the film Jerry Maguire. I deliberated for quite a while about how to approach this catagory, I found it quite hard to get into. I have not seen the film the quote is from (and have no interest in doing so either) and the world of professional sport bores me silly. However, a good old Google search of the phrase revealed that William Shatner had once hosted a short lived game show called "Show me the money", which was enough of a departure point to get me building at last. Btw, a bit of a disclaimer before we get started: I am not a hardcore Trekkie (or Whovian, for that matter), so there are bound to be significant deviations from canon in my build - my apologies to those who get rubbed up the wrong way by that sort of thing. ;)

Right! Enough of the preliminaries!

"Hello and welcome back to tonight's jam-packed episode of "Show Me the Money", coming to you live from the bridge of the USS Enterprise! I am your host James T. Kirk, and I have no shirt on."

"Let me introduce you to our contestant for tonight, all the way from Gallifrey, Mr. Doctor... um, what was your last name again?
"It's just the Doctor, thanks"
"Yes, but Mr. Doctor who?"
"No, no Mr., and no anything else, JUST DOCTOR, THA... oh, forget it..."

"Now Mr. Doctor Who, I'll just take the time to explain the rules to you, since you haven't played before. Inside each of these three cases here (presented to you by my lovely assistants, and aren't they looking particularly lovely tonight?) is a question. If you manage to correctly answer the question of the case you choose..."

"...then you will win ONE MILLION FEDERATION CREDITS!!!1! Simple, right?"
"Excuse me captain, but this game seems a little short to fill our half-hour timeslot..."
"Shut up Mr. Spock, a short game's a good game. If I need to, I'll just pad it out with archival footage and significant pauses."

"A short game is alright with me, I have to rush off to save the universe after this anyway. Ok, how about the middle case?"
"An most astute choice, Mr. Doctor Who!"
"If I may interject, captain, a random choice can hardly be called astute..."
"Oh shut up, Spock!"

"Ok, here is your question: Who speaks the lines "I am your father" in the 1980 film "The Empire Strikes Back"? (God, who writes these questions?) Hey, are you even listening to me..?!"

"Ok, ok, I know this one, it's on the tip of my brain! Umm... it isn't Thoy Bradley, is it?"
"Um, not really... is that your final answer?"

[Meanwhile, on the other side of the bridge]
"Excuse me Mr. Spock, I've just receieved a signal from an unidentified vessel that is approaching us."
"Thankyou, Lt. Uhura. What is thier message?"
"It seems to be in binary code Mr. Spock, but it doesn't make any sense. But if I print it out, I get an ASCII picture of a skull and crossbones. Cool, huh??"

"Ah, ok, so if it's not Thoy Bradley who said "I am your father", it must be Jens Adne Rydland, right? Otherwise I'm stumped..."
"Uh... ok.... are you sure you don't want to phone a friend?"

[Meanwhile, at the helm control]
"Screen on, Mr. Sulu. I want visual confirmation on that approaching ship."
"Aye aye, sir."

"There it is sir! What is that thing?"
"If I am not mistaken, it looks very much like a 19th century earth building, towing an anchor. Facinating and most improbable!"
"Whatever it is, it's coming about and closing in on us fast..."
"Sound the red alert Lt., and go to battle stations!"

"Arr, ye scurvy space lubbers, show us yer financial assets!"

"But I keep telling you, I'm just a game show host - I don't really know how to captain a starship!!"

[Meanwhile, on the other side of the bridge, the doctor prepares to time jump using his vortex manipulator]
"Time for me to get out of here..."

"Captain.... captain? You haven't fallen asleep again, have you? Yeoman Rand wants these data cards authorised!"

The assembled cast take a bow! :)

So there you have it. Not perhaps my best build, but quite a few firsts for me - first space moc since my childhood, first microscale anything, first forced perspective, first real storyline in a moc of mine... I can only get better, right? I hope you enjoyed it at least, thankyou for stopping by and having a peek! :)

Haha, cheers! My partner likes to write crossover fan-fic and is a massive whovian, so some of the blame/praise for this mash up must go to her. ;)

Quoting StoveTop Creator Sooooo funny! The Kirk interpretation was the best! And Spock's rationality! Very enjoyable! Great build too! Good Luck! :)
Thanks! I'm not much of a writer i'm afraid, (that's my partners forte, not mine) so i was hoping i'd get the different characters voices across ok. Glad you like it! :)
Quoting Matt Mason XD (Yes, it's THAT funny!)
Heh! Glad you enjoyed it. :)
Quoting A_FLYING _BANANA very well done love the idea very funny
Thankyou!
Quoting Chas Irish Great work!
Cheers mate!
Quoting Connor Simpson Oh man, that is hilarious! The creativity level is off the charts, and the build is really great– the forced perspective is excellent. Very nice work and good luck!
Thanks! I wasn't so happy with the forced perspective myself (would have preferred the building to appear a little further away, but i was at the limit of my background), but it's all a learning curve, right? It's certainly a neat trick and one i'm keen to try out again. :)

Quoting El Barto ! This is a crazy awesome build, Dude! So much going on, with all the different references, but it's really about the build, and you went all out for this. So you've got my vote, and good luck with the other judges!
Thanks so much! :D I'm stoked to be going through, and i'm glad you enjoyed my build and backstory. :)
Quoting Dave Kaleta Mr. Thomson, Back in the day, I was a 3rd wave ska fan, and one of my favorite songs by the Scofflaws went a little something like this... He got a fine tan shirt with an emblem on the chest The intersteller girls all like him the best Captian of the crew and he knows kung fu and he did Joan Collins in 1932. Really just an actor, and a genius to boot He never gets fire when the enemy shoots So he ends each show looking neat and clean After staring down the mouth of a doomsday machine I really like the one where he reads the Constitution After ending all the fighting in the future revolution! Anyway, I LOVE this build... you more than earned my vote. ~Dave
Haha, wow, you learn something new everyday... cool song, how have i never heard this? I didn't know that background about the New Bohemians either. Anyway, thankyou very much for yr vote, i'm looking forward to round 4! :D

Thanks Shannon! Looks like i live to build in this comp for another day or 10... woohoo! :D
Quoting MortalSwordsman . What a great entry. Very funny and with lots of references to other things. Do I detect a hint of monty python? Love the mini figures too. Good luck
Haha, you sure do! More than a hint, surely? ;) Thanks for yr kind words!
Quoting Thoy Bradley LOL - a great take off a fantastic Monty Python movie. The reference to my own quote was very well played too :) Good luck with your judges! ~Thoy
Heh, thanks! Yeah, i couldn't resist getting a Star Wars reference in there somewhere and it just seemed like a logical extension to that to reference the MO's itself... ;)
Quoting Quad ????? Wow.... Probably my favorite part is spock. Good luck!
Cheers, i think he turned out well too. :)

Hee, thanks Leda! :) He sure did like to get his kit off a lot in TOS, didn't he? I was thinking about starting off with him having a buff torso to reflect his physique in season 1, and getting more chubby towards the end to reflect him more in season 3... XD Cheers and best of luck to you too btw! :)

Thanks! I'm glad the humor came across ok. :)
Quoting Blake Baer The ASCII bit was especially hilarious. Best of luck!
Heh! Yeah, that was my fav bit too - glad you enjoyed it!
Quoting George G. Great entry! Are the ears of Spock painted? Because I'm not sure that qualifies in the contest :O
Thanks! The ears are not painted, but the hair is marked up with a permanent texta - it's just the hairpiece from the S3 elf. I did read the rules and it seemed that there was some leeway given to non-purist creations, i guess the judges will tell me if i've gone too far? :o I did try a couple of other hairpieces for Spock, but they looked horrible - almost unrecognisable. This was by far the best option and that is why i went with it.
Quoting JS Can Great build, but you lost me on the story.
Thankyou! I'm sorry you didn't get the story, there are a few in-jokes in there i guess.
Quoting sma stache At first I thought it was an inaccurate build of the bridge... then I realized what you were doing... Brilliant! Krazy Kaptain Kirk, you nailed it! And who wouldn't love pirates who use 18th century buildings to travel the the galaxy plundering assets!?!?
Haha, but it IS an inaccurate build of the Enterprise bridge, i know that and i'm fine with it! I guess you could see it as an alternate universe, or a dream, or a dream within an alternate universe... ;) Anyway, thanks for yr comment, i'm glad you enjoyed my story!

Quoting Yapdap The Elite Very nice! I love TOS. I've seen them all a few times. The only problem is that you put an exclaimation point after one of Spock's lines.
Yeah, TOS is awesome, it's so campy that it's just perfect to send up. Sorry that you didn't find some of the dialogue believable, i guess that's why i'm a builder! ;)

Hee, thanks! Hopefully you'll enjoy it more now that i've posted the dialogue. Nice to see that the Monty Python reference comes across ok - i did wonder! :)
