A custom space shuttle at launch pad 39a with the FSS and partially-completed RSS.
About this creation
This shuttle scene is built mostly with 80's era bricks. Set 7206 (Fire Helicopter) provided some badly needed modern parts.
The launch pad itself is a creative amalgamation of gray parts from across the spectrum. If it looked interesting I stuck it on! The shuttle sits on the pad very nicely if you arrange the SRB nozzles carefully. There is a blast hole in the middle.
I got the slight upward tilt of the main engines. Couldn't create the OMS engines at this scale. The body flap has a small range of motion and can tilt slightly upwards.
An impressionist approach to the LOX vent hood and arm. The external fuel tank was the one of the most difficult pieces to construct and I tried several methods before settling on a solid brick structure. I wish the color could have been accurate.
Basically I ran out of gray before I could complete the Rotating Service Structure. The real Fixed Service Structure isn't this varied or interesting, but a realistic LEGO FSS always seems to look too sterile and low-detail. It wasn't an option with my brickset anyway.
This was the first creation of mine after hauling out my old LEGOs for my three-year-old son. After many simulated launches and a few months of stalling, it has been scrapped for other projects. Sigh.
