Category: Is Today Thorsday Already? - Create your own version of an aspect of Norse Mythology.
About this creation

My opponent, Leda Kat's entry

This is my interpretation of the Norse Valkyrie. Valkyrie, in Old Norse means, "Chooser of the Slain". With that in mind and with Halloween right around the corner, I decided to take a darker approach to the challenge. Thus, the black wings and dry ice.

Be sure to watch the video below to see the wings in action. It's motorized with Power Functions in the base of the rock.

This is too good to loose! Why judges why!? Oh, he can't be too good for the contest? Ok... at least it's a reason :(

How did you not win? Beats me...Leda's entry was good, but (in my opinion) it did not possess the Norse "feel", when I see this I think Viking!

Amazing build, I would have chosen this over Leda's entry if I was a judge. Some more pictures showing how the mechanism works would have probably tipped the scales a bit more in your favor.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion regardless. For me, this MOC is a great rendition of the Valkyrie but it really doesn't "jump out and grab me". Just my opinion. It's a wonderful build and the movement is a nice touch. But again, it just doesn't grab me. Additionally, part of competing in anything is learning to to deal with defeat gracefully...whether you're a competitor or a fan. Let's all keep that in mind and be civil. I know (or hope) all of your parents raised you to play nice with others.

So, I've looked at Leda's entry and I've looked at yours, and honestly, if I were judging this, I would probably end up flipping a coin. You both took very different takes on the category, and both came out excellently. Each build seemed to have features that balanced, yours had gravity and some really cool functionality, while Leda's had humor an some nice light features, and both were beautifully photographed. I call it bad luck that you lost this round, as it was really too close to call it by any significant skill difference. Great job to both you and Leda, and good luck in your future building endeavors.

I do not understand how the judges were able to eliminate you, Your level in Lego building is above many (90%) Moccer. I'm terribly sorry, I was sure, that you would have won the MocOlympic 2011. Well, you do not demoralize, who knows you, will continue to be your big fan, and perhaps for this injustice, will be even more. You have all my respect! Master

Well, I didn't see that coming and I think that (two of) the judges got this one wrong. Lela's build is very good, but I don't see at all how it's a personal creation of an aspect of Norse mythology. Nevertheless, another brilliant build Tyler. You continue to amaze me with your creativity, and make me so very very green!!!!
  November 3, 2011
Tyler, I don't think you misinterpreted this at all. Next to your (now mine) Blade Runner build, this is my favourite of yours. I think you hit the category spot on, and certainly you interpreted the category literally. However, when I went to read the category before I voted, it seemed that there was a huge window for interpretation in this category. At least for me - the builds were of equal quality. I don't think her's is better than your's, but nor do I think your's is better than her's. Her lateral thinking (which I am particularly fond of) just edged you out for me. There is no shame in your loss man - I love your build. Lee.

To be honoust, I think you didn't. This is a case of surrealist head vs dissected frog. And judging is never about chosing sides. This is a call I wouldn't want to make as a judge. You have proven yourselve more than worthy and everyday you post around here is a good day. Hope to see you again next year! -Gio-

Well. The judging on this certainly shocked me. No offense to Leda, but I felt that her build didn't really suit the essence of the category. I was under the impression that it was more to create your own interpretation of an aspect of Norse mythology rather than just recreating a film's interpretation of something that was vaguely connected to Norse lore. That said, Leda's build was a solid build and I wish her the best of luck. I guess I just misinterpreted what the judges were looking for.

Well, here I have a guy that I have bought Lego off of, through Nannan’s charity auction, because I respect his building so much vs. a gal that I have engaged in a collaborative build with for BW (against said guy). Well, if this doesn’t and a confounding layer to this vote. Two builders that I respect and like; although, I have known Legohaulic for much longer. I have been thinking about this all morning until I finally managed to get out of the ER three-hours late. They are both dang clever builds: Leda’s lateral thinking and colour choices vs Tyler’s parts usage and power functions. This is not an easy decision to make. I won’t go on about 49 vs 51 or some such, as it is really 50/50 for different reasons. I will have to go with my gut on this one – lateral thinking wins the day. Leda has my vote, and as such, will be moving on to the next round. Tyler, if this comes up on the charity auction, then consider it sold. Lee.

Vote pending - I require more time to consider this match-up. Please be patient. Lee.

It's things like this that make me want to pound you into a pulp -- out of pure joy at your inventive style, of course. This is just a treat, and if your valkyrie needs to choose a "warrior" any time soon, I know this cop in Chicago who could use a good scare ....

Quoting El Barto ! Sorry, I should have worded that differently. I meant that I would have preferred something at the same level of your technic cat. It exemplified the skills I felt were required to build a winning creation in this round, as opposed to using the large bionicle type pieces. So comparing this directly to Leda's, following the same logic, I felt that her traditional brick-built creation was more intricate and aesthetically pleasing.
That's understandable. Thanks for the clarification. I would argue that this is on par with the skill level of the cat. While this doesn't involve a large setup, it does involve the aspect of motion and mechanics which the cat did not. However, you're the judge and not me.

Mr. Clites, I really enjoy this piece. The power functions certainly put it over the top. Having only one picture might have also hurt you as I wasn't a big fan of the wing placement. You did earn my vote though. ~Dave

Quoting El Barto ! You've come up with another great build here, Dude! The power function adds an exciting element of realism to the creation. However, I'm not a huge fan of all those big pieces that seem to account for a majority of the body armor. I'm afraid it doesn't offer the visual interest that your technic cat did, at least for me. So my vote goes to Leda. Good luck with the other judges!
Thanks for the kind words. I just hope that in your judging, you're not comparing it to my other models, but rather judging it within the confines of this round.

Like many others in this round, this is not an easy decision, Tyler. You know how much I loved your Poseidon's Fury (and even more your cat), but your Valkyrie doesn't really win me over. It's probably too much bionicle for me. Sorry, my vote goes to your opponent.

I have put a lot of thought into this comment: I have thought long and hard, pondered repeatedly, mused to myself in the confines of my bedroom and have decided, upon length, that the word to describe this is: HOLY ELEPHANT! (It's bigger than Holy Cow) :D You sir, set a bar that is just to high for even aspirations. I dream that I could make something as good as this! The dry ice, the video, the presentation just make this pop. Even without the power functions this could have run toe-to-toe with Leda's entry, and the moveable wings just make my jaw fall to the floor. I just keep rambling on because I am cannot believe how good this is. UGH! AH! Ok, I really should stop commenting now and think to myself how awesome this is...

Flat out one of the coolest things I've seen! The character has such a realistic look, you've captured the body parts so well. Shoulders, torso, face/head, the legs may look a bit thick, but who cares, and I don't even want to get started on those wings, the flapping PF's are phenomenal! So real.
