A story about a D-Zug (express train) being rerouted over the small rail line between Venlo and Nijmegen.
About this creation
This story was written and built for the German ISCC 4 competition. It plays in the Netherlands.

Thanks to James Mathis for his DE-2 design, the steam locomotive tender was designed by Ben Beneke.

It's 1971, just outside Mook; Meet Mr and Mrs John Doe

Mr John Doe works for the railroad and is in charge of track maintenance between Venlo and Nijmegen. He lives in a typical railways home right along the track. In front of his house are two alarm lights, warning him and his family of approaching trains.

Monchen-Gladbach; Mr Travelot gets on the D-train to Den Haag to return from a business trip. He always sits first-class, close to the bar area where the beer is always good. The trip shouldn't take too long, soon he'll be home again. The hostesses prepare for departure.

Just outside Mook; The maintenance people are hard at work replacing some old sleepers. One of the crew watches out for oncoming trains. The diesel for Nijmegen should come along now shortly.

The Blue Angel, still a pretty sight even though she's now painted red. Rumor has it she might be overhauled and receive the new yellow/blue colors.

Venlo Station; The D-train has arrived in Venlo. Here the German steam engine is switched for a Dutch electric locomotive to bring the train to Den Haag. Mr Travelot glances out the window, to see the new electric Class 1500 engine being placed in front of the train.

All of a sudden the conductor rushes towards the engineer. The signal is still red! The engineer calls to the signal post ahead.

At the signal post in Venlo; "Sorry, but the track to Eindhoven is blocked due to an accident. We'll need to re-route you over Nijmegen. I'll see if I can find you an engine."

The engineer is NOT happy; he'll need to take an old diesel engine and put it in front of his 1500 for the first part. No catenary on the stretch to Nijmegen. As he walks towards the 2400 diesel he's been assigned he wonders if the piece of junk will make it all the way. These engines will soon be retired according to the monthly railways newsletter.

At Mook Mrs Doe all of a sudden comes rushing out of the house "An extra train is due any minute, clear the tracks! The D-train to Den Haag has been re-routed"

Moments later the old 2400 comes limping along, struggling to keep the train moving.

As the train passes Nijmegen Heijendaal the engineer breaths a sigh of relieve. Almost there and he'll be able to start up the 1500 again. People on the platform are stunned, a train moving so slow, not stopping. It is looking rather odd.... O well, delays are what you expect of the railways....

As for Mr Travelot, he's so far out from all the beers he most likely won't have noticed anything.

That is fantastic! I especially love the house with the great use of classic windows. Did you build all those stations etc. yourself? You did not all build them only to be in the background of this MOC I suppose?
