My category was Quoth the Raven - Build a scene or story based on the work of the American writer Edgar Allan Poe. So I built this. Enjoy.
About this creation
Zac (my opponent)
The 2011 MIT group

Carl: Ah, what a lovely day. The sun is shining and the beach is just lovely. When will that darn waiter come with my soup?

A couple sharing lunch. (sorry for blurry pic)

A man throwing his dog a bone. (Weird thing is, one picture is fuzzy and the other is as sharp as can be. And I know how to properly take a photo, so no comments about that)

A fisherman who thinks he has got something.

The water.

The waves lapping against the rocks.

A large rock at the edge of a sand thingy.

Carl: What the...! Bloody He...Aghhhhhh!!!!

Carl: Whah? Where am I? Oh gawd.

Carl: Jeez, this is a creepy place if I were to say so myself.

....And there was a knocking at my door....and a rattling at my window....
Carl: Whaaat was that?

Carl: WHAT THE..... AGHHHH!

Carl: Tis' the raven of Edgar Allen Poe! It's a nightmare! I'm too young to die!

Carl: I gotta get outta here! I don't want to die! I wanna live! (cries)
(From The Raven)

Carl: Well I'm happy I'm away from that house....

Carl: Holy Crap! WHERE AM I! (various shrieks of pain and agony)

Carl: No! Don't bury him! I think he's still alive!
*coffin thumps*
Carl: Didn't you hear that?!
Gordy: Nope, didn't hear a thing.
(From The Premature Burial)

Carl: Help me! It's the Red Death himself! You killed that innocent man! Everyone scatter!
Red Death: Resistance is Futile.
(From The Masque of the Red Death)

Carl: Careful little gold bug.... Nice little guy aren't you? Now don't bite me. Okay? I'm going to slowly back away now. Okay?
Gold Bug: Rawr.
Carl: AHHHHHH!!
(From The Gold-Bug)

Carl: Helllooooo? Anyone down there? Anyone in this dark, creepy, damp, crypt?
(Cries of anger and death)
Carl: Okay then, nobody's home. AHHHHH!
(From The Cask of Amontillado)

Carl: Ooo. Finally something not deadly. A nice little play.
Kings in monkey suits: AHHH! Help us! We're on Fire! It Burns!
Carl: Oh, not a friendly play....
(From Hop-Frog)

Another shot of the burning kings.

Carl: No! Don't! He's innocent!
Man: Yes! Yes! Believe him!
Priest: I have no say in the matter.
Carl: This is too terrible to watch! Where is the law!?
(This is from various works where someone gets hung)

Carl puffs for breath, exhausted from his screaming.

Then a crow lands on him...
Carl: AHHHH! It's back! It's the Raven!
Raven: Jeez, for crying out loud, I'm a crow. You should be worried about the raven though...

Carl runs into a little tavern to the side.

Carl: It's madness out there! Where is your law and order?!
(Nice noises of a bar sound out)
Carl: Oh, this place seems nice, cozy, and safe.

Carl: Ahh, I'll have the nice drink that the man over there is drinking.
Bartender: Okay.

Loud shaking that causes everyone to bolt instantly.

Carl: Oh no. What's going on....

Suddenly the roof blows off and pendulum swings in.
(From The Pit and the Pendulum)
(Imagine him screaming at the top of his lungs for these next few pictures)

It swings lower

and lower. Until it hits him.

Carl: AHHHHHHHHHH! Wha...? Where am I?
Man: Remember me?
Carl: Oh yeah. Hi Bob.
Bob: Hi.

Carl: Well I think you scared me out of my Edgar Allen Poe addiction.
Bob: Good.
Carl: Nice day.
Bob: Yup.

Bob: Nice meeting you. See you next week for your appointment.
Carl: I'll be there.

A crow lands on Carl's hand.
Carl: AHHHHH! It's the Raven!
Bob: AHHHH!
Crow: Jeez. Again, like I said before, I'm a crow, not a raven.
END

A quality entry with some decent builds, but blurry picture are not your friend. It's still a close call, but my vote has to go with your opponent as well. Better luck next time and thanks for playing!~H |

Both approaches are interesting. The builds portray them well. The tipping point is the build and presentation but not by much. My vote goes to your opponent. |

Very Nice!
I like the creepy room but the physiatrist's place could have done with some work.
I love the final shot!
I wish you luck with our other judges! |

This is a cool build, however I felt your opponent had a stronger connection to his story, and a better build overall. My vote goes to your opponent. |
