Magmael, The Ashen King, Somniferrian Ancient
Alright, folks - sorry for the prolonged interval. My latest addition to the lore of Somniferria is a departure from the first discoveries - and a special page torn from a very early chapter in our world's lost and deeply buried Past... Keep reading - I'm only bumping stanzas because we as MOCpage viewers never actually READ anything unless there's a PICTURE ABOVE THE WRITING. =) (If this isn't you, then Bless You, and you may read on w/a Clean Conscience.)
About this creation

A truly amazing turn of events has occurred to those chronicling the planet - the discovery of advanced technology, buried far beneath the wild and bestial Somniferrian surface.

In particular an Archive, most remarkable; a repository of alien data kept secret until, fortuitously, a breakthrough in imperial translation tech isolated a root glyph among the stored symbols, blooming miraculously into entire passages of hitherto meaningless volumes of code.

Although the passages are still fragmented unto a full translation can be achieved, certain historical references emerged, fully justifying the evidence of higher Somniferrian life-forms made elementary by the complexity of the Archive Tech itself. The minds that devised the advanced Science of the archive spoke, as if from the dust of as yet uncertain ages past.

In their ghostly voices, they told of another Somniferria; a shining civilization of high science, a world of advanced nations, warring and creating, locked in circles of eternal conflict and ever-escalating stakes in great game; in which the prize was dominion over Somniferria itself, and control of technology older than the Empire and an order of magnitude more powerful.

In their avarice, the great nations of this planet gave birth to an order of creations, the crowning achievement of their mastery of science and culmination of their lust for Power.

In the depths of their blind zealotry, the gave birth to beings eventually called the 'Ancients', due to their success in outliving their creators - and, as Fate would dictate, even their descendants, unto the very last generation of power-mongering devoted - destroyed by the very beings they so worshiped, that their mad ancestors called foolishly into being so very long ago.

(Just a quick look at the raw Metrics of this MOC(withOUT gimmicks deployed in the measurements shown), more Scale shots follow)

From each nation rose one Ancient, one terrible Angel, to champion the petty Causes of those who believed themselves puppeteers of their fettered creations. But the Ancients were made too well, and became Aware.

In their new awarenesses, they saw only each other, the true threats to their Dominion, and all the petty Somniferrian nations that had given birth to them as the base insects they'd all become.

Monsters borne of blind ambition, the Angels rose, so very far above their progenitors, and they too fell into endless warring amongst themselves, locked into circles of eternal conflict; a stalemate that knew no mercy, and took no notice at all to the destruction their battles wrought.

Together, they crushed the cities and nations of Somniferria under their mighty tread, and in their bloodlust they never noticed at all.

Their War destroyed Somniferria.

And at last, stalemated and unable to destroy one another, they diminished, disappearing into the deeps of the earth to sleep for all time.

It must be noted that not one shred of evidence has been discovered to support the assumed historical references made in these partially translated texts.

They may be no more than a recorded religious ideology, a morality tale left as testament to generations they hoped would survive their own folly. The Empire may never know.

As remarkable as the some of the current forms of life populating the surface world may be, it is clear that if the texts bear any semblance of truth, they are pale shadows of the former strength of their planet.

Both terrible and beautiful: the brilliant failures of Somniferria Lost, now dust and shadow, mere savage echoes from the throats of those that once called them from the darkness, and until the very last, blinking, into the Light.

Alright! SO: as SKYRIM is installing, I am updating and adding per frame, as I go, before disappearing into that world hopelessly for awhile. Bear with me. It's been busy 'round here.

4th Wall Commentary( to the best of my understanding of this expression): I debated about introducing yet another color into the build, but wanted the shoulder cannons to have that 'bio-crystalline' look, so settled with m'self to allow those translucent shapes on swivel arms to hang from the highest pair of socket joints, as shown.

When I was thinking this Ancient through, alot of powers stemming from elemental Lightning and Fire came to mind. What the more base Surface races do with energy conversion, these Ancient creatures inherently tapped into or spontaneously generated. Somniferrian Precursor Tech was AWFUL stuff. They were fools not to see what their marvelling at their own genius had blinded them to: the dangers of their own keen ingenuity.

These legs. Ack. Boy, did we go through alot of revisions. I wasn't thrilled w/my exposed pistons here, but they were the most effective resistors to overflexion or collapse due to high upper body weight. The wings, you see?

Those rods were just the thing to stiffen the ankles to the adjusted weight over a wider range of poses.

The Achilles rod stiffens ankle-to-foot. The higher rod strengthens ankle-to-calf. I wanted flexibility and height, but the BNS joints were just too weak w/out support. These were a late idea that necessitated a rebuild, but it was worth it.

These made for pretty deep lunge poses. Still not entirely satisfied w/the doubleknees, but overall the effect works well.

This was a first for me: hadn't tried getting my MOCs to 'fly' yet. Even Emberhawke never got to, poor guy. But I get him airborne eventually, Magmael just ended up being First.

Detail for that overlapping torso armor. Inspired by old Lorica Segmentata. Wish I'd been able to do waist articulation, but the wings were too heavy - tipping was the inevitable result, so I settled on stability.

A very simple, but very classic pose, with all weapons deployed. It is easy to see why Somniferrian Precursors sometimes called their terrible creations 'Angels'.

At a point following Magmael's discovery of self-awareness, he withdrew into the colossal subterranean Temple where'd he'd been created.

He went dormant there for many years, contemplating the meaning of his existence in shadow and shame, deep beneath the earth. He held in contempt those who came to worship him, sitting on his great powered throne under a blanket of ash, brooding and still.

The day he finally went into motion once more, many thousands died down in the red-limned dark, cut down by the very object they'd tried to Deify.

I liked the all-translucent pauldrons shown here, meant to show where all those surface descendants got the tendency to use Crystal to store and convert energy; in Mag's case, from geothermals.

A look at the back detail, showing the overlapping gorget behind the head, and the back armor.

...And a full-length shot, with the Blasters out of the way, aloft.

... and finally with all weapons retracted once more, tucked into their transit formations, presenting a smaller silhouette.

Before even the first Somniferrian generation had finished pulling the strings of their puppet of War, the peoples had dubbed him 'The Ashen King', for the look of brooding repose when dormant on his immense 'Throne'. Actually a linking platform for his vast geothermal charging network, it's proximity to the magma rivers that powered it made it evident that this Ancient's power is derived from the planet's molten core.

I am still uncertain about his blasters. If I can, later, I 'll definitely revamp color to try and bring Mag back to my original scheme. I liked the shape, just lacked the bits I needed, in certain colors.

I kept the hands small and simple. There just miiiiight be OTHER Ancients planned for the Future ;) and I want their attributes/powers to be distinct. Didn't want these hands to stand out; it was about his armblades, wings, and tail.

'Gettin his Wing on.

When finished, I think Mag has a very classic look, leant upon Gundam, Anime, even some Eva elements. I liked this basic shot very much.

A shot mid-stride. Sorry if their not your thing, Viewer: but I like the chicken-leg-thing, reversed Knees-look. It also helps that those work very well with MOC weight distribution.

A lil' Wolvie-action. Those blades ended up being just the right size for his 'look', i.m.h.o.

As you may have noted, there are some distinctly dragonesque features present. Like other design keys, this was no accident. To allude to a later secret revealed, with Magmael, like the Emberhawkes, the tail is a serious piece of armory.

This shot shows that leandering 19" as it dangled from the ledge of my photo area.

A shot of the custom head detailing and gorget. Wish I'd had more pieces of certain colors. *sigh* Future Revisions are immanent.

See the yellow? It was a Compromise. The only yellow I think will survive in the future will be in the Shoulder Cannons, and perhaps not there, either. :p

Brooding, glancing upward at the home of his Somniferrian creators on the cold and distant skin of their planet. What insects they must have seemed to him...

A detail shot of the torso cuirass and abdomen. I am a longtime fan of those Phantoka ribcages. What can I say? - I like gimmicks.

They worked nicely here to expose more orange, crystalline bio-organic internal structures of this fiery being.

As a sidenote; I've noticed a number of Animes (Full-Metal Alchemist, Origin, LeGuin Saga etc.) featuring knightlike breastplates whose gorget (neck protection or collar) rise well ABOVE the chin of the wearer. This leaves a wide cavity for the head to rotate within, while still offering protection from throat and shoulder attacks.

Many of the shots, including this one, feature that pose, as tribute to that animation trend.

...And this one, as well.

SO: I've hinted at it, and here is the first revelatory comparison. Magmael and Emberhawke, together. Peruse the similarities, and consider...

Lots of them, yes?

Well...

...the entire notion of the Ancients sprang to mind when I considered what it would be like trace lineage backwards from the very bestial surface races into the past to... to what? Why are there so few humanoid attributes in the Upworlders? Where did they go, if anywhere? Are they still around, but in hiding?...

Thus sprung the idea of terrible ancestors to mind, beings of incredible power, slumbering deep in the earth, while their descendants skittered about far above their heads... echoing their warlike mortal forefathers' eternal struggle for survival and dominion.

...While far below, those giants slept fitfully, dreaming dark dreams.

Who knows if Somniferria would ever recover, should those beings Rise once more?

(...a classic Babe Ruth pose, Mag calls his Shot)

And here, the Angels in fiction, mimic in Fact. Somniferria created them in their own image, but at their ultimate potential - so much higher than they were meant to rise.

Their angels took to the skies, clashing with one another by daylight and on into the night, spilling each others' burning blood under the trine moons.

I'd not been able to rig my photobooth to pull off 'Flying' effects until this time. It was a blast. =)

Their minds were as advanced as their synthetic bodies, and in the long years locked in stalemate, some of the Ancients emulated the folly of their Creators

- wielding the terrible sciences of their Age; giving rise to creations of their own!: in their loneliness, they too, attempted to Create in their own Image. From Magmael's own essence, he created the very first small spark.

From this he sculpted and molded, divided and reformed, evolving the legions of creatures that would be known as Emberhawkes!

Never more evident were those 'dragon'-like qualities, than when I posed them for Flight...

Made me think how fearsome a thing it would be to look up into the skies above Home to see something like that bearing down on you...

The Precursors wished to give birth to Greatness, to build the Angels themselves...

...be careful what you wish for, eh?

(a simple shot w/out effect for a clean look at the same)

"...the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of Nature..." - George Bernard Shaw, 1929

Again, I was very pleased with his profile, with static poses, or in flight, as shown here. The wing/weapons weight was a great concern, bacwards tipping all too common, until a leg revision - the shortening of a joint, oddly enough, seemed to make all the difference...

...as originally, Mag was almost 16" tall! (I was going for Titanic scale (and will likely attempt it again =P)) His menace was satisfying, especially descending upon you from above =)

In a sequence of shots meant to help you with Scale, here are FrostHulke, Mag, and Umbravore, in a series of truly fun 'Charlie's Angels' shots.

I was surprised when I saw he even topped 'Hulke a bit in height.

...As revealed earlier =): in my fiction, the 'Hawkes are actually descendants of Magamel - minions created in his image that have either degenerated, or evolved, depending on the author's perspective.

In my opinion, I see the 'Hawkes as savages; feral and base, given to their bloodlust and carnivorous instincts. Who knows, who knows, what they might've descended from?

If Magmael made the very first Emberhawke in his own Image, what, then, does that say about HIM...?

4th Wall again: just wanted another aerial shot with 'Hawke back there, b'cause he never got much Flight Time, and to show all the hidden indicators that the two creatures were quite related, as Angel to Nephilim, perhaps...

One montage for all the Somniferrians thus far with titles for reference, AND...

...a final shot with a surprise Teaser for Trinitaur, my latest project for the Somniferrian Surface Races: No, you didn't miss an Entry - I haven't made him one, simply because he's still a W.I.P.!

I just wanted to throw him in w/his compatriots and fellow 'Ferrians, for a final Group Shot. MORE TO COME on him and his relation to the other Races, soon. This was the Project I had to consult BrickLink for: the bits have arrived, and revisions are underway even as we speak. I was just too excited to include him to leave him out; so I just hid his terribly incomplete Back Half ;).

As always, and to ALL OF YOU, I thank you so much for looking. If you enjoy, do me a favor: I hate fishing for Hits, but I'll shamelessly ask you to view my Videos on Youtube, PLEASE, and Crit/Comm/Subscribe. HUUUUGE Thank You in advance if you will -

...my goal is simple, there are plenty of amazing builders out there who AREN'T MOCpagers, and getting their attention 1)gets me a chance at their advice 2)gives MOCpages a chance to win their patronization. I want to reach MOCpages, and Beyond!...
Anyhoo, thx for looking here (AND YouTube), and bless you for your time! CHEERS! =)

Quoting Lindel 1324 So, I took a couple close-ups on Astromael's legs, like you wanted, but the image uploader is being a pain right now. :/ I'll try to add them tomorrow. My sheet of poster board isn't big enough to serve as a proper background for him, so I won't be able to give him his own page until I finally get a plain white sheet. (My whole family doesn't own a single white sheet between us. =P How weird is that?) Then I'll be able to post the lore I've come up with for him. ;)
No worries! Let each MOC be finished in its own time. I have rushed something as simple as not waiting to Launder a bedsheet for a background, and then had that one mistake add DAYS to my editing time. Just take your time, and do what works for you!

Quoting Max W. Yeah, I sorta figured it would be something along those lines. I was thinking about the lore you've created and I just came up with a couple fun ideas for ancients myself. Might have to bring them into light sometime... although my build style is very different from yours; I have little to no HF, but more bionicle than anyone could ever ask for.
Can't wait! Drop me a link here, when you're ready for a Review. Cheers, Max~ =D

Quoting Max W. WAT. WATWATWATWATWAT. I didn't think they would be anywhere near that tall, I had them figured for beings that relied more on their "magical" power to destroy everything rather than size but... Jeez. Dominael must not have been very good at making out what somniferrans he was crushing from way up there. And oh, belive me I've seen the pacific rim trailer. I'd have never expected a movie like that from del toro honestly, but I'm certainly looking forward to it.
Aye, to your initial point. Because of the purpose they'd been made for, even their scale was meant to be symbolic. Idyllically, to deter aggression from rival nations by their mere presence. Even the 'good' Ancients, like Valkyriel, in that vein. A giant Guardian, ready for even the greatest threat (boy did THAT not turn out as planned, eh? =P...)

Quoting that crazy kansan taylor snowden Great moc though somethings don't fit in my opinion *mumbling to myself* would you mind telling me how to do the flight poses I really like how they look. :)
Wings aligned, swivel the feet until the 'heels' almost touch the 'calves', bring both legs in until they cross, as if you were pretending that both feet had to balance, tip-toe'd, on the SAME tennis ball. Then serpentine the tail into some shape that looks like the streamer for a good kite. That's about as exact as any suggestion along those lines can get, I'm afraid: I go on all the time about how MOCists should take the time to POSE their works well, then I realized how hard it is to tell someone else just HOW to do it.... XD. I guess, and this sounds lame, even to me, but in the end it's a matter of personal Style. Good luck!

Quoting Max W. Hi! So I was just revisiting all of your old MOCs, and you describe these ancients of having such incredible power. Now I don't know about you, but when I think of incredible power, I think of enormous, titanic entities. With this set however, I can't really put a finger on scale (of course, I could have just missed it when I was reading the lore behind these guys). How big are they exactly?
It's not in there, Max. It's astute of you to mention the omission, actually. *sigh* I've always had numbers to answer this question with in mind - but often don't use anything except Recognizable Objects in the Photoshopped pics (i.e.: trees, skyscrapers, ruins) as Scale comparisons. -----In general, like so (in my silly fictions =D, I cannot stress this enough): === The Odaiba 1/1 Scale Gundam measures 18 meters (about 59 feet tall). Some scale pics of this can be found here: --- http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2011-11-24/1/1-scale-life-size-gundam-to-rise-again-in-tokyo --- Magmael, here, is my smallest Ancient, towering to just over thrice that height, coming in at 91.4 meters (about 300 feet tall). That's a frazz shorter than a 15-Story Building, if an object lesson helps your visualization. They're Titans. ...And also consider that the sizes go up from there. If we leave Wingspreads OFF the discussion table, then Magmael, fully erect posture, only makes it to the BOTTOM of Dominael's ribcage. Say, um, 360 feet, give or take? (and that's about an 18-storey Building). In my mind, I tried to guess how big a SuperWeapon would be if the resources of an entire Nation were thrown into its construction. On Somniferria, your nation's Ancient IS your ENTIRE MILITARY. ...They did away with armies, and built Angels, instead. And, as the other lore points out, they built them FAR too well. =} SHARP question, Max! Cheers!~ P.S. - For a cheap, dirty object lesson (and although my MOCs far pre-date this movie's script, have you seen the trailers for Pacific Rim yet? --- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A85EtOalcsM --- that scale for the Jaegers isn't terribly far off! =D )

Quoting Lindel 1324 This is amazing! Seriously breathtaking. Your World Of Somniferria MOCs are some of the best Bionicle MOCs I've ever seen. I'm thinking of creating some Bionicle MOCs myself. Do you have any suggestions for getting a lot of pieces for large scale MOCs like this? Back on the subject of your Bionicle MOCs, have you considered putting a World of Somniferria project on LEGO Cuusoo? I think it could be extremely successful.
Thanks so much, Lindel. For getting parts, I have very patiently watched Bionicle Lots on E-Bay, then grab 'em when the price is good. I try to buy a cheap set every other week or so from my local Store shelf, to keep up with newer bits being made. I am extremely intrigued by Cuusoo, but all my builds are rife with ghetto-enigineered shortcuts, cheats, and tricks likely impossible for me to reproduce. I worry that they'd HATE me for that. =D THANKS for your Awesome Review, though!!!

Quoting Will Bramhall Wow, is it possible this is better than valkyrel, sorry I spelled that wrong.Do you paint your parts? If so what paint do you use, I have some pieces that I have spray painted and They look really bad.
I used a common 99-cent can of Flat White from Wal-Mart for Valkyriel. Nothing special, but I suggest you lightly sanding, then using several coats. I also spray my bits down inside an open cardboard box. Hope this helps. For Magmael, I used some special pens - you'll have to read down a few comments. TY for the review!

Thank you very much - both for the Review and the visit. I tend to love working with 'tailed' MOCs for the additional stability those 'flexible kick-stands' Tails end up BEING: it's kind of a crutch (allows me to keep building BIG, too ) but it's hard to argue with Results - they WORK. Alot of my MOCs rock the Tails. TY for the Review, and very much like your LDD works - I have CAD background, but tend to like to get AWAY from my PC to build. =) Cheers!

Sincere appreciation, Jared - as far as RESPECTABLE MOCworks go... there was a lot more refinement put into this one: I wanted the Ancients to be 'a Build apart', far more complex and powerful. You'll hopefully see that Contrast in my next two Somniferrian releases (coming soon) Cheers!

Quoting Ian Spacek You've certainly got some of the coolest Bionicle creations on the pages. Nice job.
They are (mostly) alot of fun to Build, Pose, and play with. I'll keep it up til I run out - and I Thank You for viewing/reviewing!
Quoting Samko Kovacs cool!!!It is excellent!
Appreciated, Sir! I do love this sinister guy. And there just MIIIIIGHT be another Ancient under construction !;) hint-hint!
Quoting Chris Yee Hah, been out of the MOCpages loop for a while now, and what do I find? Masterpieces (yes, more than one that I'll comment on shortly) in both form and function, great photography, great story... I could go on. Simply Awesome.
I am humbled by your kind words, Sir. I will endeavor to continue this series until I can imagine no more Mythos to accompany it (and then I'll just Full-Geek-Ahead in some NEW direction, likely =P) THANK YOU ALL for your visits and Feedback!!!

Quoting Griffin Hunter That is sooo... ....beautiful!! How much would this things price be around. I want one!
Y'know I never really considered; Um, I guess, if you went about getting the Sets that these parts came from, mebbe 45-50$ (JUST A GUESS!), BUT - if you used BrickLink, and got the materials you needed, piecemeal, and stuck to ONLY what you needed, then I guess it would be much less. Let it be known that I had duplicates of some of these armor bits used (on the upper arms) and I Part-Modded the interiors, with clippers, to make them fit better. ---Yep: I admitted it. I MOD sometimes.--- So: if you make the decision to Build this, then be ready to permanently alter the fit of a couple of pieces. THANK YOU for the Like, and for looking! Cheers!

Quoting Bob the inconceivably invincible You're a great builder, storyteller, and photo editor. There's no dispute, that's a winning combo.
That is very very kind of you to say Sir. Look around - we are SURROUNDED by Talent here; man, I find something new literally several times a day (I don't get to sit down in front of MOCpages everyday =(- ) when I browse that makes me go "Dang. I wish I'd thought of that..." THANK YOU BIGtime on the Comment, though. Cheers!

Quoting Chopperskull Jon First, I love that you take too many pictures haahha ! :D Truly amazing moc. First, I gotta say the sharpie'd pieces are actually colored well and looks nice !this guy is huge, and has lots of pose ability and articulation ! Man this is one of the most awesomeest(not a real word lol) Mocs you ever made !
Lol, actually I use a set of oil-pigment pens from a german company that are especially adherent w/porous plastics. I collect Gundams, and have been using these things for years, I fend em fairly cheap on E-Bay. They work just like Sharpies, but won't rub after setting, even w/strong strokes. Takes a little zap with a hairdryer or leave in a windowsill to set, but works REALLY well. Company's called Konig: just look for any of their line with the Staedtler-Flow pigments in the comments. Nice stuff, and THANK YOU for the Feedback.

Quoting Baron Von Ben ~ WHOOOOA!! That's amazing!! The style for the design is like no other, and the flexibility and poses really bring this creation to life! This is some of your best work!! :D
Very kind of you. There were some interesting challenges for the articulation as he grew, but I'll cover those in some of the lower 4th Wall bits. Cheers!

Quoting Monarth GS An outstanding appearance. I find a lot of similarities to Emberhawke, however looks more sleak and noble. I'm not a fan of painted masks/pieces, but in this case the head detail is excellent :)
Monarth: YOU WIN the Cardboard Cookie, Sir. Excellent Guess!!! I've been adding Frame Texts as I go, but if you'll look down at the last few pics on the list, you'll see a few shots with ONLY Ember and Mag together. These are entirely intentional ;) You'll see why as soon as I can finish the 4th Wall. Smart man!

Wolfe Overlord, Max, Daniel, Carruba; THANK YOU ALL, and any others I may have missed, for the visit and Feedback. I so appreciate, and am Inspired by, all your works. Your input is critical. For the rest, gotta go make some money now, to afford things like BrickLink orders, but later tonight - I will finish Frame Commentaries, and spill the beans on the other projects that have kept me away so long. I will have time to visit all your pages to see things I've missed in the last weeks to Catch Up. CHEERS, All!

Quoting Yuri Fassio A bit too many colors for my taste, but the build is very good and the photos, as always, are SPECTACULAR. Love the group shots, I'm amazed that you can keep that kind of MOCs intact, you must be immune to part shortage :)
YURI and JOHAN: totally fair comments from both of you. Here's the Truth of it, folks - I AM running out of the parts I wanted! :( I was going to stick to no more than black, red, silver - but the bins are running low. I used far more colors than I wanted, but they'll just have to do until they can be switched out. The skeleton under the tail... all that yellow and Orange trans... etc. BrickLink, E-Bay: Help! What you all can't see is that I'm pillaging older MOCs for parts as these Somniferrians are born. ;P THANK YOU for your feedback, and Cheers!

Awesome! You sir, DO have style. Even tough the build itself is not sooo fantastic, it may look jumbled sometimes and you use more colors than advisable, the final results is great, well composed and with a very unique design. The painted parts also work pretty well on your creations, contrary to most cases. Great job!

Thanks for the Feedback - Yep: detailing isn't for everyone. And you may have noticed I don't do it on all my work. When I feel inspired to try it out, I just give it a go. Enjoyed what it did, myself, really liked the overall effect, so I stuck with it. Cheers!
