It took 8 weeks of daily work to create this Superhero-MOC.
About this creation
I decided to do DC comics this time, so my colleague, the Dark Knight Dave Kaleta can enter the Superhero contest for us. And the famous Daily Planet building seemed to be the best place for a good fight.
Also have a look at George G.'s amazing micro version of this MOC. It's brilliant, just like his other creations.

Okay, let us start with a closer look at what is happening in the 5th Street. One office is down (but only unconscious), people panicking, broken glass and bricks all over the pavement and one cop pointing his gun to the upper floors. We’ll see a bit later what is going on there.

A bit closer to the road junction there is a little kiosk, selling DC comics and the Daily Planet newspaper. Here’s the first hint in which decade this scene takes place. I took some liberties, but it’s somewhere around the late 1930s, the golden age of comic books.

Just some more spectators. I probably had the famous photo in mind, where a sailor kisses a nurse on victory day (Time Square).

I came up with my own version of the Daily Planet. I never really liked that the planet is on top of the building, so I tried something different and I’m still very pleased with my interpretation.
More liberties: I always considered Gotham City a bit like New York. Metropolis is often portrait brighter, friendlier, so I decided to plant palms instead of broad-leaved trees. My Metropolis is a bit like Miami.

Here’s our hero, Kal-El alias Superman, getting hit by a kryptonite ray from one of Brainiac’s robots.
For quite some time I had thought about which villain to use for this MOC. Of course Lex Luthor came to my mind, but also Bizzaro, Lobo or Mr. Mxyzptlk. In the end, I realised that I had to fill a huge MOC with action. As a result, I created a robot army with the typical 3 (often 5) Brainiac circles on their backs. When I designed them, I tried to stay true to the typical 1930s-1940s comic design.

Clark Kent’s best friend, Jimmy Olsen, is too shocked to take pictures.

One of the rare occasions where Lois Lane is not in immediate danger. Here I tried to come up with some retro fashion for her.

The traffic light is – apart from the kiosk – my favourite part of the MOC. And have a closer look …

… the street signs say “Concorde Lane” and “Fifth Street”. That’s the corner where the Daily Planet is located in the comics.

Every little detail is important.

Every little … wait.

That’s Superman’s wardrobe, though he almost never used phone booths in the comics, movies or radio or tv series. Quote: “This definitely isn't the most comfortable place in the world to switch garments, but I've got to change identities - and in a hurry!”

The main entrance. I really tried to stay true to the reoccurring Art Deco design elements.

Speaking of Art Deco: I needed a flat roof for the rest of the action (and a water tower for Aqualad), although that is not typical for Art Deco as far as I know. More liberties.
Anyway, here we can see 2 members from the very cool animated series “Young Justice”, helping Superman to defend Metropolis: Aqualad and Superboy.
Superboy (Conner Kent) doesn’t have heat vision in the series – at least that’s what he alleges in the series – but mine does have. Sue me!

Aqualad (Kaldur’ahm) using hydrokinesis and his water channelers to pin down one of the bots.

Remember when I said that we’ll see later what’s going on in the upper floors? Good. This is one bot that already got knocked down by Superman (in addition to some parts of the building), but is not defeated. Unfortunately, this is Perry White’s office and he’s not afraid of intruders.

I removed the bot to allow a better view into the office. The paintings, that you can see on the right side, show the skyline of Metropolis and Gotham City.

One more time the 2 teammates. I’d have enjoyed building the other members of Young Justice, but it was a matter of time and space … again!
SKETCHES
Following now are some of the sketches I did in the beginning and during this project

COLOUR TESTS
I needed to order a lot of bricks for this MOC, so I had to make sure in the beginning that I would be satisfied with the colour design. I tried different ones, but in the end decided to use a combination of dark bley, tan and dark tan.

DIARY
Here are some making-of photos:

EPILOGUE
I hope you liked my presentation. I’ve had a lot of fun building it and now I have to go back to my normal, boring life.
I hereby declare that Dave Kaleta has the unencumbered legal right to use these materials to participate in the LEGO® Superhero Contest for us.
Just one more thing. Similar stupid name but even more dangerous than Mr. Mxyzptlk: Mr. Xenomurphy

An absolute awesome build. Love the Young Justice addition and the building is just.... stunning. I always saw Gotham as more of Chicago and Metropolis similarly to how you visioned it as Miami or San Diego or similar. But again, stunning!
Thank you, Daniel. I am a huge fan of Young Justice and it is a shame that they cancelled the series after season 2. It is interesting that you mention Gotham/Chicago, because there's one famous building in Chicago that was an important inspiration for my version of Arkham Asylum. |

Justin, you really did a fantastic job creating all the different layers and especially all those little details. I always admire it when builders put a lot of thinking into their MOCs. Adding one or two more pictures of the whole creation might be a good idea - I'm sure they'll look great. Good luck with the judges.

Two flaws: 1, Super-Boy does not have heat-vision except with his patches witch you built this before they existed in the show. Two, he usually DOESN'T smile, especially in a battle.
He is smiling, because his heat-vision, which he unexpectedly discovered right now, tickles his eyes. |

Absolutely incredible. The attention to detail is top-notch. There's so much that I like, here are a few items: the water flowing out of the tower - perfect; the robots - amazing; the planet and the letters in the front of the building over the curved wall - mind-boggling, (how did he do that?) The devastated office may be my favorite part. The desk is well done, and are those degrees in frames on his wall? Are you kidding me with that? Anyway, this is easily among my favorite MOCs I've seen on this site. Great piece of work. |

This is one heck of a MOC. I hope to once become half the builder you already are. Even if that means to also become half as crazy. Just kidding, keep it up with that pace and we can expect even more greatness in the future. |

It's a bird... It's a plane... No, it's an AMAZINGLY detailed Superman scene! This here is a work of art that you have made. I think everyone else who commented has pretty much summed it all up; you really outdid yourself with awesomeness :D
I really like how you showed the entire process from the sketches to the final product. I wish more people would start doing that because it provides a fun behind the scenes look and can inspire other builders.

Amazing! You didn't skimp out of a single detail, and with a build this big that's really something! The techniques used are incredible, like Lois's skirt and wrenches for the lamppost. The water looks stunningly realistic, and I like how the broken part of the building has a ceiling and roof revealed, most people would only build one level. The entire structure is phenomenal, from the sphere, to the arch, to the painstaking details on the window ledges. Truly a masterpiece, great work!

Xeno, when you shared the WIP pics of this with us I was blown away then... and now... There are no words. This is just STUNNING! Congratulations my friend! You've done "justice" to the genre and made us all very happy for sharing it with us! Good luck to you and Bats in the contest! ~ Chris. |

This is certainly one of the best examples of the incredibe architecture that is achievable with plastic bricks. Fantastic! |

This has the amount of detail, cunning and architectural genius, not to mention the budget to make it with such perfectly executed coordination and scheme that I only dream about! |

Brilliant work here dude! You didn't miss a single beat here. Every detail is covered, and covered well. The art-deco details and the custom decals put this well over the top. Your action is right on the money, the movement is clear and well captured. This is a serious investment of time and parts, you've raised the bar with this one! |
