About this creation

True story- in 2001 I had a dream that I went to the year 3001. After a short information session we caught a train into the city. As the train followed a sweeping left turn I was able to see the track ahead. To my surprise the track was in the air, held up by huge arms- arms only on one side of the track. The carriages hung from the track 'dangling' in mid air.

Hello, I am pleased to announce the opening of our Gondola Monorail!

This Lego model shows a similar set up to what I saw in my dream. I don't know how much weight this can take so I've just made up one pod here, for tourists, rather than a long chain of carriages, a mass-transit system, like in my dream.

In the real world there would be some boom pendants (I think they are called) helping to take most of the weight, like how a crane works.

We certainly have nothing like this where I live. I think their is something similar in Europe. In researching I came across drawings from 1906 (although they may have even been photos) of Gondola Monorails which look pretty cool. Very futuristic for back then. And I think a modern one would be cool today.

I thought I would have all the trouble in the world trying to figure out the wheel system. I thought I would need to use technic bits and have to use an odd stud number, like 3.25 or something. At some point I thought I would try steering wheels. They work perfectly! If only everything in life was that simple.

The track could go over a water way or a park. I'm very happy with how it looks. Even though it can't go around corners the passengers are happy with their new transportation. Minifigs are easily pleased.

I don't have the skills to make this motorised. The motor would be pretty bulky or take up all the room inside. But my models aren't for playing with (try telling that to my little nephews).

Thanks for the comments : ) Yes this moc is all my idea. The cable car itself was meant to be a longer carriage, for city commuters, but that's too heavy for the tan arms (unless I glue the bricks...). The track held up by one arm on the side was from a dream I had, although in the dream the arms were more of a gentle curve rather than this straight up and out at 90 degrees

Hi Marc, I've added a couple new photos (I originally had trouble with the lighting), just so you can see the gondola monorail in the 'real-world'. I am nearly finished building a train station so the gondola monorail may even go over top of the train line. Thanks for the link! The hanging trains look pretty cool- wish there were more around the place

Neat design and great colour choice! Try to add some more details and shoot in the daylight, it could turn out to be a nice diorama. Oh, by the way. We have something like that in Germany: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wuppertal_Schwebebahn ~Cheers
