Autoracks in five fun flavours!
About this creation
These models are of typical North American autorack railcars that are used to transport automobiles. I modelled the bi-level (2 rack) variety but they also come in a tri-level (3 rack) variety.

Videos (Click video to play)

Below are videos of actual autoracks and my Lego versions. The first video has an actual train with all 5 of the autoracks I chose to model. The second video shows my Lego autoracks and some Lego CP AC4400CW freight engines (click to see) running around my kitchen floor.

Details (Click photos to enlarge)

I decided to make the models full size. I did not skip any panels and make a shortened version of the car. The result was a model that is 6 studs wide and about 51 studs long door-to-door. I was a little bit concerned about the length when I first designed the cars but the end result seems reasonably well proportioned (at least I think so) :)

Railcars that are 51 studs long can present some challenges when turning around the sharp Lego train track curves. I initially considered making the base out of two standard train bases put back to back but those did not allow the bogies to turn sufficiently to negotiate the corners. Instead I ended up incorporating the bogies into the base itself as shown in the photos below.

Since this is an autorack, I decided to include some autos and racks in the design! I used the ladders to hinge the doors so they could be opened. Inside is a second level rack that can hold cars that are 4 studs wide and 3 1/3 bricks high. Most Racer type cars fit if you swap out the original axles for a skinnier variety like these. The middle sections of the roof are also removable to make the model a little more playable.

Ah yes, the waiting for bricks is always the hardest part of the building process. :) Good luck with the models. I'd like to see a photo when you get them done.
Quoting David C Hey Andrew... Thanks, my versions using Dark Gray Blue/Yellow bricks are under construction. I have to say, it was kinda fun disecting your photos to figure out your construction methods, but I think I got it. I will let you know how they turn out. Thanks again. Anxiously gathering the pieces I need. Its gonna be an expensive car. - David

Thanks for the complement David. I post my designs to share with others so feel free to use the ideas.
Quoting David C Well done ... these are some of the best custom cars I have seen. I agree with the others regarding the corners, but thats a lot of brick length. Anyway, Wondering if you would be willing to share your design? I'll build mine from your plans. =)

I'm shocked at how realistic your design looks! This is the nicest custom Lego freight cars I have seen! Thanks for sharing!

This autoracks look better than the real ones. I thought that cars which are longer than 40 studs would look bad on courves but now I know that this isn`t so.

Thanks for the comments Mitch. Sorry they are not for sale though - I am working on my own layout.
Quoting Mitch McAdams These auto racks would fit perfectly on my layout. I have a huge layout. 6 4X8 tables. Barely any corners. About 13 corners. Most are 4 sections. Some 3. Others 2 and 1. I have a locomotive that can pull 10 freight cars. Willing to sell them? I need amazing looking freight cars on my layout.
