Dual Differential Drive
The main advantage of using a dual differential drive is that it will allow your vehicles/robots to go straight even when using unequal motors, which many types of LEGO motors are.
About this creation
The downside of using a dual differential when compared to the typical setup is the reduction of power when going straight and when turning using both wheels, because only one motor is being used when performing these operations.

Dual differential systems also tend to have a lot of gears and axles, which add friction.

In my experience, it is usually best to use the typical setup unless going straight without veering is of great importance, and no reliably equal motors can be found (The NXT motors are pretty even).

Please do not be discouraged if you are interested in using a dual differential drive; I have used them very effectively in the past.

Quoting Eric Landreneau Fascinating. I'm really startig to get into using gears, and have a few random ones I can't figure out. Do you know if there's any resource I could look into to see examples of different grears in use, and their purpose?
I know it is not LEGO, but Fishertechnik has a great kit for learning about gears. If you are looking for some kind of online resource or book, I cannot help you. A lot of what I learned about gears came from my dad, who is a mechanical engineer, and from my own experimentation. Maybe I will make a mocpages series on gears.
