SB2C Helldiver- VB6, USS Enterprise
The SB2C may not have been the most loved, or aesthetic of warbirds, but played a major role in sealing the fate of an already declining Imperial Japanese Navy. The story of the SB2C is one of an idea put to paper that ended up being changed so much it hardly resembled its origions. The Navy wanted a faster dive bomber to replace the venerated SBD Dauntless, and to accomplish this Curtiss tried to cram a large engine into a stocky, short frame. The result was the stout SB2C, which saw over 880 modifications by the US Navy before it went into production. This meant that the Grumman TBF Avenger, which was put to paper a year after the SB2C, came out a year pefore it. The SB2C was not well received by pilots or skippers, who found it to have terrible low speed handling, resulting in a large amount of crashes when trying to land on carriers. The SB2C would see many quick changes to improve its handling, and by the time the SB2C-3 came around, pilots and crws began to warm up to the "Beast" as it was known, or the "Son of a Bitch, 2nd Class" per its designation. The SB2C would wreak major havoc on Japanese shipping, especially with American fighter pilots owning the skies. Though not as revered as the Dauntless, the SB2C was much faster, and was quite effective at its job. The SB2C would in effect nail the coffin shut for the IJN in WWII, and though it was flawed, the superior training of USN pilots adapted to it, and turned it into a truly lethal weapon. The Build: I went with the 1943-44 tri color paint scheme of dark blue/light bluish gray/white that does look pretty good. This was totally inspired by one of the masters of Lego aircraft building: Ralph S, or "Mad Physicist." Ralph does an incredible job with his planes; I often find myself re-doing my own designs so not to make them look too much like his! The hardest part with this one was the crew area, and finding a good way to do the windows. The bombay cam out well, and can hold large ordinance. I also like grabbing several different shiny round plates for the engine cowling, I think it really gives it a little extra touch. I'm going to make folding wings still, and probably a few other changes... hope you enjoy!
