Hagrid's Cabin -WIP
From my abandoned Hogwarts layout.
About this creation
I had big plans a few months back to spend a year or more on a huge Hogwarts Layout for Brickworld 2013. I began with Hagrid's Cabin... Then along came the 2011 MocOlympics and Hogwarts got forgotten.

I have abandoned Hogwarts and am now about to begin another big layout for BW 2013. Thought I should post what I have done before I tear it down to reclaim the parts:

Hagrid's Cabin.

The scarecrow which would have completed Hagrid's pumpkin patch.

After my first roof attempt failed, badly, I turned instead to Gryffindor Tower. (also incomplete)

Although I have abandoned the whole Hogwarts, I would like to at least complete Hagrid's cabin, but I got stumped at the roof. Please some help as to how I could make a cool... round roof?

Quoting Matthew Novosad Looking good so far! Do you mean BW13 or BW12, because I might be going to BW12 :D. I'd have a few of my creations up on display! Just got to ask my Dad if he wants to go to Chicago for a week :p. Also, the three cats are doing great!
BW13. I can't make it back again this year. Shame I'll miss ya. Great to hear the kitties are doing well.

That's why you're the 2011 MocOlympics grand champion and I am simply a paltry wannabe whose lucky enough to be noticed while being stepped on. Wait a minute, scratch that last line, different fantasy. Any hoot, I still think something original like a crane about to drop a giant ACME anvil or maybe a piano on ole HP would be more fun in a twisted little way. Hope that brough a grin to ya cause that's a victory in my book if it did.

Quoting Mike Johnson Forget the roof. Create a viscous kitty monster (in honor of your own little puss) busting out the top to pounce down on Harry and turn him into a wailing scratching post of misery and suffering for all of us to giggle at merrily! Happy Meow Year my dear!
I did a giant viscous kitty monster already: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/215787

I know exactly what it feels like to abandon a project, but it's fantastic that you'll finish Hagrid's hut. It looks very cosy so far.

Beautifully constructed, can't wait to see it finished. Shame your not going to create a large scale hogwarts castle, if Hagrid's hut is anything to go by, it would of been the moc of the decade.

Hi Leda. Shame these will not be finished but I am sure you will use their pieces for another wonderful moc. The round wall technique is fantastic. I wish I could come to the show and see your creations 'in the brick' Oh and meet you of course ;)

Great work here, Leda! Although I'm not a big HP fan, I can appreciate the architectural elements here. As far as a round roof: rounded slope bricks with a big radar plate in the middle (ala Yoda's hut).

Thanks all, I've received some great ideas from you about the roof and all your comments has given me a new wave of enthusiasm for this little hut.

I'm so looking forward to seeing this when you finish with it. As always, your attention to detail is wonderful. I love that there's a painting of Fang hanging over the fireplace.

You had better finish Hagrid's hut! =) It's a shame that you're abandoning the project (but understandable). I'm sure you have something wonderful rolling around in your cranium and I look forward to whatever it is you ultimately decide to build!~H

Good looking MOC so far! Here is a Czech form that I think might help! It has pictures that are easy to figure out and some really cool hut type roofs I think. http://www.kostky.org/forum/index.php?topic=17945.0

Kind of creepy, I am really stumped on the roof? Maybe teepee a bunch of 1x8 strips or something, no idea? I am going to experiment at home over the weekend on that one. Cheers :)

Leda, Some really lovely stuff here. I think a combination of the fan technique with alternating wedge plates and skinny plates would match your style best for your missing roof. ~Dave

Impressive! The variegated colours and textures are amazing, and the angles are excellent. As for the roof, I've no idea. However, I know Medieval Guy has done some stuff with round roofs, I don't know if you'd find it helpful.

Quoting I Scream Clone Lovely start mate, the trouble with round roofing is a tough nut to crack. You could try fanning out wedge plates. Shame we will miss each other at Brickworld, I am likely to attend the even years and you the odds.
That is a shame. I am desperate to get there again this year. I still keep thinking there must be some way I can make it, but no great financial solution has surfaced yet that doesn't see me drowning in debt...
Quoting Mihai Marius Mihu Hi Leda, these are wonderful, its gonna look great when finished. Check this for some round roof tips: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/288371 or http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/288922 hope it helps. ~Mihai
Thank you so much for doing that research. They are both beautifully done. I especially like the red one and that design will look perfect here I think.
Quoting Tyler Halliwell This is quite nice. Hagrid's hut is such a great size. I need a round tower roof design myself, so if you ever find something, please share. Great work on these, as usual.
Tyler, check out the links above, they would be perfect for your towers.
Quoting Chris Stone Why would you stop now? Everything you showed here looks really good! If I were you I would just complete it all if I had already gotten this far. But whatever you feel like doing is what matters though.
Thank you, but I got bored of it. Also, there are lots of Hogwarts mocs out there, so I've decided to do something I haven't seen done in Lego yet, so am not trying to compete with any other person's style or view of it... or indeed official sets.
Quoting Popcorn . I love it! Everything is perfect! Love the wall on Hagrids hut, I'll have to use it sometime. Might I recommend somehow doing a SNOT roof (like with roof slopes on their side). Just because I haven't seen it done, and I know you could do it well. Btw where is BW? As I would love to go. Oh, and Great job on this (as always)!
Thanks Popcorn. Brickworld: http://www.brickworld.us/chicago/ held in Wheeling, Chicago every June. I was there last year, but can't afford to get over again this year. Would love to see you 2013!

Excellent work my dear! 'Tis a shame you didn't complete the entire layout. I know what you mean about roofs, as they are definitely a weakness of mine. For rounded shapes you can go with TLG's solution of using angle pieces attached to hinges and they all meet in the center.
