The bottom of the Covenant food chain.
About this creation
After much procrastination, I finally got around to making a Grunt. These are the Ultra and Spec Ops versions respectively. It’s hard to get much detail in such a small fig, but I’m pretty happy with the overall shape.
And for those people wondering about the stability of my designs I have stated before that they are not really meant for four year old little brothers to throw around the house, but when used in dioramas and vignettes etc. they work great. They are all very poseable, and once posed, they are actually very stable and can be easily handled...except for that darn Jackal body! ;-)
But everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinion...and thanks for looking!

This is the Ultra, the highest rank a Grunt can aspire to. Keep in mind; this is a Halo 2 Grunt…the Halo 1 Grunt looks a bit different, especially the eyes.

There was no cutting of pieces here, but the black levers I used for eyes had to be bent down slightly to fit in the hollow of the back wedge piece. They straighten back out very easily though. Getting the two levers through the face piece in the first place? Now that was a pain. Using the older style levers with smaller hinge ends helps a lot.

Pic for comparison to the next shot. Keep in mind that is a plasma pistol he is holding, not a needler as in the comparison pic.

Comparison pic. Grunts actually have dark grey skin, but Lego doesn’t make dark grey lever bases (for the feet), so I went with black. I tried light gray but it didn’t look that good. Also, the Ultra’s armor is really white, but it looks kind of silvery here, so that’s what I used.

The Ultra, with my Fuel Rod Cannon. Again, this is from Halo 2 as opposed to the Fuel Rod Gun from Halo 1.

I think the Cannon turned out pretty decent, and it’s very easily held by normal mini-figs.

This is the Spec Ops version. I know it’s kind of a pain that the hands can’t hold standard Lego weapons properly, but it just matched the look of the actual Grunt’s arm so well.

Comparison pic. I tried a light grey face but it didn't look good and as I mentioned before Lego doesn't make that piece in dark grey.

“Hey, you’re the new guy, huh? Welcome aboard! Say…did you hear about the company’s recreational league basketball team? We’re called the Fightin’ Bytes…pretty cool, huh? Anyway, we play on Thursday nights and Steve from I.T, who was our center got injured at the company picnic, and I was wondering if…ah, you might be interested in…well…hmm…just how tall are you?”

Family pic of the original four Covenant species. Grunts are four to five feet tall without their armor, so this guy fits in pretty well scale wise.

Hands down, the best Grunt. Ever. Also, is there any special way you made those Minifig hands wedge inside those lever bases? I've been trying for 10 minutes, and can't seem to do it. |

Somehow I missed this creation between your others. I gotta hand it to you - I do find this wacky little guy appealing. I guess he's just kind of... well... cute! :-P The only thing negative I'm gonna say is that I disagree with people who say the Grunts have grey skin - certainly looks bluish to me! Or perhaps a bit purplish... but anyway; doesn't matter. Good job! 5/5 as usual. |
