Joe Pineapples bust
"According to Joe Pineapples, the best sniper in the galaxy is Joe Pineapples".
About this creation
Ok, so I'm stoked that I've re-discovered the weekly British sci-fi comic 2000AD, an absolute favourite from my teenage years. You English or Australian readers might recognise 2000AD, (the publication of Tharg the Mighty!) but I think the comic is almost unknown in the US. Anyway, it's home to Judge Dredd and many other very awesome weird and wonderful characters and groups, one of which, the A.B.C. (Atomic Bacterial Chemical) Warriors, was my favourite. A ragtag band of mercenary robots roaming the galaxy in search of war, money, fame and cheap beer (what more could you ask for in a comic?!) This sculpture of Joe Pineapples, the group's cross-dressing, megalomaniacal sharp-shooting sniper is a tribute to the ABC Warriors and the imagination within the pages of 2000AD, which stirred my teenage imagination no end.

I started with building the face and then rest of the head as that was going to be the trickiest, getting the likeness right. Luckily, Joe has exaggerated tough-guy chiseled features which made it fairly easy.

The next harders part was getting his black leather jacket with it's upturned colour to look right, sitting over the top of his blue metallic chest muscles. My first atempt was to try curving plates:

which gave a nice expanding curve but it didn't allow for space for his neck and shoulders, so I switched to using hinge bricks sideways to give the curve. It worked better as I could cut out space for the back of his neck but I would've liked more hinges; I ran out and it does look a little bit stiff. Still I'm happy with the end result:

He looks much better in real life; our stereoscopic vision enables us to see small changes in agnles and how they relate to the overall structure but photograps tend to flatten and dull the image, like looking at a 3D object with one eye shut, so these pictures don't do it justice. I've photoshopped the 4x4 dishes he has for ears from bley to blue as apparently, blue dishes are very rare, only appearing in 3 Lego sets ever. I was too lazy to fix all of the pics.

Thanks for looking guys. I hope everyone had a great Xmas and is fired up for heaps of Lego building in 2012!!

This is so cool. I love his chiselled and large square jaw and the colour and shape is wicked. This must look great sitting on display.

I'm afraid you're right about this comic. I never saw it on the shelves and I was an avid collector back in the day. Anyway this bust is an excellent build and I would love to see the rest of this wacked out bunch of bots if you choose to build them.

Now that's just flipping cool! I'm not familiar with the comic (but know the universe it's set in). The robot kinda reminds me of this group from an 80's cartoon where the 5 robots combined into one (no, not Voltron) and one of them (who formed one of the legs) was this blue robot who ate everything... man, wish I could remember the series... Anyway, love this! Great work! ~ Chris.

Great bust! The overhanging jaw is very striking. I'm not familar with the character, although i did read a fair bit of Judge Dredd back in the day and i loved that. Happy new year btw!

I vaguely recall seeing this comic once in the long ago, but that's it. Robots are cool, so therefore this is cool.

Very well done! I don't have any knowledge of Joe Pineapples for comparison, but from a layMOCist's perspective, this is a very good build!

Instantly recognisable Shanno, great job! Hammerstein next please! I just borrowed the Mek-nificent Seven from the library a few weeks ago because I hadn't read any ABC Warriors in ages. Then Chopper. Then Anderson: PSI Division. Then Dredd. 2000AD is addictive, glad you've re-discovered the joys mate.

That's a pretty great bust, and with characters like that, I might have to see if I can hunt down a few strips of that comic. Nice work!
