The NEOS 'Raptor' is the first VLM, or "Variable Loadout Mecha", in the NEOS military. With the majority of the NEOS engineers and mechanics either retired or killed by Dark Augusto, and with nominal amounts of new recruits, the current engineers decided they needed to kill two VTOL drones with one stone by manufacturing a mech that was modular enough to support a range of effective weaponry, rather than taking precious time designing multiple mech frames for the same job. Thus, the Raptor was born. Enjoy!
About this creation

There are two places to mount the modular loadouts, one on either side of the mech's body.

Due to past difficulties in maintaining a... resilient mech force, the designers spent extra time reinforcing the shoulder joint, which has been notoriously the area requiring the most maintenance on walkers.

Large, claw-like feet also provide extra support on unstable terrains.

The spikes, while not very effective as a scare tactic against the nearly emotionless machines of DA, play roles as sensor and communications arrays. Hey, they can be stylish and functional, can't they?

Every current loadout of the 'Raptor' mech is equipped with two light laser cannons on the front lower body. Limited rotation allows for targeting fast-moving infantry without rotating the entire body of the mech.

The type-1, E-class loadout for the 'Raptor' is equipped with all non-projectile weaponry. This heavy laser cannon is ideal for melting armor at medium range.

Six capacitors on the rear of the cannon charge the powerful laser, with a faster recycle time than one large capacitor would have provided.

The second attachment in the E-class loadout is a heavy flamethrower, which is useful against mass infantry, obstructive foliage, or marshmallows. The flamethrower has two settings, one which fires a short-range but powerful stream of fire, and one that fires contained globs of incendiary goodness in a longer-range, more discreet manner.

The type-2, M-class loadout contains projectile weaponry for bombarding, pummeling, and shredding enemies.

A heavy rail gun serves a similar purpose as the heavy laser, but is much better at preventing unwanted structure fires. (credit for the sloped shape of the rail gun goes to Eamon Ward and his Rail Gun.)
a 12-shot mortar tube is also equipped to the M-class, which basically succeeds in overall obliteration of most targets. The battlefield is no place to be stingy.

In addition, each loadout is equipped with a compact launch compartment, located between the spikes.

The launch compartment can be stuffed with all sorts of goodies, but anti-aircraft missiles are the most popular choice for 'Raptor' pilots.

The VLM modular weaponry.

The cockpit, which seats one pilot. An on-board AI helps with targeting and such to eliminate the need for a copilot.

This is a REALLY cool mech!! I really like how the weapons can be mixed and matched for different missions. By the way, this mech really looks like the normal mech for the computer game Red Storm. Was this an inspiration, or just a coincidence?
Just a coincidence. I've never played that game before. |

I really like the way you've got it's feet and legs setup as well as the detailing you've put into them. Are they particularly flimsy or fairly sturdy?
They're the sturdiest non-click joint mech legs I have currently assembled. Posing the mech is a pain, but for display, it can take plenty of bumps and jostles before breaking. Thanks for the comment! |

Nice mech, and cool collection of weapons. I'm kind of partial to that rail gun, myself. Well done, Chief! One question, are you using an outline tool on Gimp for the border?
I use the fuzzy select tool. It isn't quite as precise as outlining the MOC to select it, but it's much faster. All I do is select all of the background (you may have to shift-click a few times if there are shadows) and then invert the selection to select only the MOC. It takes less than a minute in most cases. |

Red is the NEOS color for heavy units. Most mecha, tanks, and artillery are red. |

Nice job bud on the Mech!!! It's the beast!!! Really like all the attachments you have for the Raptor. Really like the lazer attachment. Well done I bet she is really fast on the terrain. Keep it up.
Thanks, Pete! I'll keep tinkering with laser cannon designs, and hopefully you'll see more of them on my mechs! :) |
