BSE ZS 'Nexu' Starfighter
Meet the Black Sun Empire's deadly ZS Starfighter...
About this creation
Yo,

Another holiday, another big lego car, another big lego spaceship.
My last couple of spaceships were quite big, and it was fun trying to get them bigger all the time - but this time I thought that hey, they can't all be big, there has to be a variety of sizes and classes, and that I'd make something a little smaller again this time. Not that I really succeeded, it ended up being not far off as big as the last haha... but in this case it's a lot nearer the correct scale.
This is the Black Sun Empire ZS Starfighter, nicknamed the 'Nexu' for its deadly capacities and the shape of its cockpit, being reminiscent of that of the beast's head; and some pilots like to paint the front of their ships with grinning fangs, like the example shown here.
The inspiration for the main shape of the ship was loosely based on a mix of an R-41 Starchaser and a Klingon Bird of Prey.
It's intended to be a large starfighter, a fair bit bigger than single-seater snubfighters such as the X-Wing or TIE Fighter, and quite easily capable of ripping them to shreds with its superior firepower and shields, whilst still being capable of equal speeds. However, in the grand scheme of things, it's still a relatively small craft, and might not fare too well against bigger craft, such as Corellian Corvettes. As for size, think of it roughly halfway up the size scale between an x-wing and a corvette, approximately 50 meters long.
(Also, I've just realised (whilst getting sidetracked looking up the sizes of the two previously mentioned ships) just how similar this looks to a marauder-class corvette. Quite a funny coincidence seeing as I hadn't even seen that one up til now. Ah well...)

Anyway, here's the rest of the description in photo-tour mode:

Top of the craft.

Side view

Oooh, menacing !

A better sight than the last if you aren't on its side.

Those teeth remind me of the Izs from cartoon series 'The Maxx' (http://twistedmethoddan.deviantart.com/art/1163-23-04-The-Maxx-Isz-206052165)

Cockpit, with double laser turrets either side.

Midsection roof.

Upper canopy, and four forward-facing laser turrets.

Engine housing roof.

Wing detail, with flap and funky exhaust looking pipey things on top, as well as a rear-facing gun on either side.

Under the wing, from the back, and attachment to guns.

Front under wings, with double turbolaser cannons and over-the-top missile battery.

Engines ! Though not quite as impressive as those of my last two ships...

Wing seen from above, with side canopy bubble.

Cool-angle shot.

Picture used for the main pic.

Interior now - here's the bird's eye view with the top off.

I was really happy with how the cockpit turned out on this model. The idea for the slanted nose joined to a straight body worked a lot easier than I thought, attaching the seats to the flat, horizontal body underneath, and the various consoles, buttons, levers and lights to the underside of the top of the nose. It actually looks pretty cool how each of the three cockpits are surrounded front, left and right by various controls and gizmos, but I think it was hard to get decent photos to really show it off, so here are a few...

A center console in the midsection of the ship provides some basic, but important, functions to crew members. Here we see one using the communications system, and can notice a storage locker to either side.

On the other side of the center console is a big screen providing vital data feed and technical readouts for the crew. Or TV, when not in battle.

Between the center console and the cockpit are some out-of-the-way, but easily accessible bordered off storage compartments, in this case holding some badass weaponry.

At the rear of the ship are four pillars, in real life holding up the wings (built as they were, to rest at that angle they had to go in to the ships body quite far, so I tried to turn that into a useful looking part of the ship. Each pillar holds a crew member's storage locker, or two for the front ones; and racks with arms and torches.

Nearest thing to an 'engine room' can be seen behind the ladder; the ladder being used to access the center canopy bubble.

To each side of the ship, between the front and rear wing pillars, is a short ladder to access the side canopy bubbles in the wings.

Random top-shot.

Inside of the side canopy bubbles. Not sure what they do besides provide extra view. Maybe the guys there can help target, or manually take over some of the guns.

So there you go, the ZS 'Nexu' Starfighter. I hope you like it, let me know what you think.
You may also want to have a look at my brother's page (http://www.mocpages.com/home.php/14570) who has recently uploaded a pretty cool spaceship, and has also just finished building a BSE ship of his own, which I imagine e will upload later today.

As a footnote - I've been thinking of building a base of some sort for the Black Sun Empire for a while, so that may be next on the agenda for when I'm over during the summer. I've also noticed the lack of land and sea vehicles I've made for the series, so that's a likely project too. But sadly until then, I think that's me over and out for now...

- Dan

what a fun moc, this exactly the kind of thing I was building during my (short lived but fun ) second Lego era of the mid 90's. Cool interiors and love the triple cocpit...

Quoting Grant Brenton Well lets see, where to start. I really liked your use of bubble windows here. You incorporated a hard to use piece quite nicely. Your color scheme was pretty cool as well. The black makes for a fearsome look. Your engines really impressed however. They really looked powerful and I liked how you utilized another hard to use piece to go over the top and bottom of said engines. Your weaponry was also cool although as a thought, you might consider some auto turret action somewhere along the length of the ship. Overall though, very nicely done. You have created a nice small corvette sized hybrid ship here.
Thank you :) I'm having to try different arrangements for the engines as, using the same parts on all my ships, it's starting to get hard not to make things too repetitive. As for the 'odd' bits I think it's interesting to add a bit of variety, parts like that help avoid a too rectangular and plain design, generally speaking. I shall be back home soon for the summer so hopefully more to come...

Quoting MortalSwordsman . Hi Dan hope you are well. I love this, the shape is really cool and I love the front Haha. As usual it is packed with little details too.
Thanks :) Just coping with a month of torturously boring revision for my upcoming scary exams. If I want to pass, I need to know my stuff - though I can say from experience that watching paint dry is much more fun haha :) Glad you like the model! It sounds like my upcoming summer holidays is already going to be fairly busy, so I'm not sure how many new lego models I'll be able to make - but hopefully a few. - Dan

I am a huge fan of your Black Sun series. Also, I find it inspiring to see models like this that look great on the outside but have functioning minifig interiors as well! Just outstanding work.

Very cool. Reminds me of the stuff I built when I was younger (I had lots of black bricks with the blue canopies) Anyway, I would say that due to its huge size and crew it is more along the lines of a blastboat or patrol boat than a star fighter.

nice. a bit simplistic, especially the nose, and I can't really see this being a starfighter as much as a gunship due to its enormous size, but I like it.

Kinda Blacktron, but very different than most stuff here. I like it, but the interior seems a bit empty for the size of the SHIP.
