This is a one to one model of an 1879 fire hydrant. The hydrant and wrench are one to one with the originals and built entirely from Lego.
About this creation
Back in 1980, the city put a new water pipe lines down our street and replaced this 1879 hydrant with a brand new model. With the help from the folks at www.firehydrant.org it is thought that this hydrant is a rare model built by Canadian Locomotive and Engine Company Ltd. It seems that very little is known about this hydrant.
This Lego model is a full scale one-to-one copy, as best as could be done with the Lego bricks. The wrench was also modeled off an original hydrant wrench in one-to-one scale.
In 2006 our ex-city fire chief asked for this hydrant to be repainted and placed on exhibit in the cities fire department museum. It was returned to its original colour red, from yellow.
The chain links were created by stringing together 1x1 round brick. After years of stock pilling yellow brick, the building started. The shape of the hydrant was drawn, by hand, to create the round shapes needed through out the build. After a hundreds of yellow parts were ordered the model slowly came together.
