To Mega Therion
The Great Beast, Draco Rex Niger, or as I like to call it - my attempt at defeating Stormbringer in his comfort zone and taking the crown of Dragonmotz.
About this creation
This creation was built for my MOCoff with Stormbringer, in which I went all-out (almost. I have another cool idea in mind, but I laready had a 50x50 base built, so I went with this) and intend to win.

As always, more pictures on Brickshelf.

Find 3 cats! (2 white, 1 black)

Second challenge! Estimate the age of the representing Draco rex niger, taking into account it's built in minifig scale!

(I strongly recomend watching the video, it's the best way to see all the details and features of the diorama)

Music:
To Mega Therion by Therion

And now, for another lesson in dragon biology, by Deus Otiosus! This time we are Learning about the most powerful species of dragon, the royal black dragon (Draco rex niger)!

The royal black dragon is the most powerful dragon species, combining a muscular body, spike-covered tail and an incredibly hot green fire. Many scientist belived, until recently, that the fire is green because of theoretical chlorine in it's fire-venom(the venom is icompletely carbon based in reality), but it is in fact a consequence of the extreme heat.

The royal black dragon dines primarily on human fles, although it will not hold back on other dragons, never canibalisticaly though, becasue of thick scales and sharp spikes over the neck, back and tail.

Nesting of The Great Beast is very specific, this relatively rare dragon only nests on areas it had burned in the radius of over three kilometres and generaly on temples built by its worshippers, rarely on rocs, where civilization isn't evolved enough/at all. Even in remote savannas and deepest jungles the tribes create shrines, altars or gigantic drawings to worship the dragon. The nest will hold one egg, and if two are laid, the mother will crush one of them (this action requires unnatural amounts of strength because of the hard shell) after a few years and mangle her baby. When the egg hatches, the dragon is already able to overpower some smaller species of dragons, although it doesn't need this power, since it feeds on sacrificed people, mostly children.

The dragon doesn't leave its deadlands for 50 years, which is when it reaches adolescence. During these decades, it learns skills and the regional language (to make demads of sacrifice) from its mother, practicing art of music (they sing songs of which sirens would be envious) and sculpture (carving rocks with its crystallyne calws).

At the age of 50 (up to 70) they leave the mother's turf and fly far away, generally finding their location in around 10 years. They become sexually mature at 150 years, but rarely mate at such age - it is more common in their adult stage, which is reached at the age of 300. They hibernate for 50-150 years at the age of 750, but they can communicate at the time (many foolish warriors chose this time to slay the dragon, only to have their swords brake and melt on the scales, which can reach extreme temperatures). Time has no power to touch them, beware, better leave these worms alone!

They mate once per millenia, when they gather on the poles, flying and dancing through aurora borealis and aurora australis, but only on the peak of the sun's cycle. To a being as powerful as To Mega Therion, radioactive mutations are the only force of evolution, since natural selection has nothing to find in them.

Male and female dragons are not distinguishable to an untrained eye, but there are some minimal differences that let us draconologists identify the royal black dragon' gender, like a slightly curved tail tip on males (female dragons have angular tail tip), horn angle and length (male horns have a stronger curve and are generally shorter, since they don't have to break eggs), the crown-shaped skin-covered spikes on the head also extend over the top of the head at female dragons.

Firebreathing has an importaint role in the Great Beast's life, in mating, nesting and intimidating, but not in hunting, since their prey, when they do hunt, is mostly dragons, who tend to be relatively resistant to fire (humans are generally sacrificed). During the hibernation a small gap on the mouth opens up, letting the fire the dragon breathes come between its second and third layer of scales, heating it up externaly to as much as 2000 degrees Kelvin, leaving the internal body at the DNA-acceptable 318 degrees Kelvin.

These dragons hatch at the length (nose(/horn tip at females)to tail tip) of 9 studs (3 metres), then grow to the length of 20-30 studs (7-10 metres) during the first 50 years, reachig 40-50 studs (13-17 metres) when they sexually mature and 75-100 studs (25-33 metres) when they reach the pre-hibernative adulthood and finnaly around 150 studs (50 metres) after the "hundred-year sleep", from which they do not grow any more.

Their hibernation is relatively eventful, but it may pose some problems to the dragon - even though it is practicaly invurnable, it is its time of greatest weakness - which is digging a hole to the world's outer core and dropping To Mega Therion in it or its worshippers leaving. The royal black dragon can speak during these years and mostly meditate to understand the world and their superior position in it, but they also find their most loyal followers at such times. After hibernation they reach the stage of the "elder dragon", which differs form the regular form merely by number of horns, tentacle formation resembling a beard and size.

Reanimaton of To Mega Therion is ill-advised and should absolutely never be preformed - if the dragon is killed (for instance, lava getting inside its multi-layered skill) and the brain manages to dissolve, the structures inside the cranium will keep a majority of its memories and will corrupt the soul given to the great beast's skeletal remains, after which the soulstone will melt and thus the necromancer will not pose a threat to the dragon, which will destroy anything it sees. A reanimated royal black dragon is also the only being more powerful than a living one (there are exceptions withing other hibernating dragons, but are extremely rare). The only ones that have a possible chance of leashing these bone dragons are their loyal worshipers and should only reanimate using the dragon's own soul, even if To Mega Therion asks to be killed to be renimated, for more power, becasue even though the remains of the dragon's conciousness are transferred to the bones, it may forget its followers and destroy the realms around. Worse scenario than that is that it remembers it had a follower and possibly friend, but forgets who he/she is, resulting in immesurable destruction on continental scale.

These information were gathered amongst the followers of these great worms, who are to be thanked for this general description of this most powerful dragon, abou which today's draconology lesson. The reliability of these information is very high, since one of these followers just explained To Mega Therion to you. (for the slower ones of you, that follower would be me)

Quoting Michael Rutherford I really wanted to comment on the round castle like structure on your home page, but I could not find it posted in this format. So, even though this review is in the wrong place...I really like the almost hemispherical shape you capture with the irregular wall segments. I image it is mostly just hinges and odd braces inside, but the exterior is both unique and enticing. Like a castle that half collapsed and then stabilized. The odd window is an extra accent that really earns its place in the overall build. I am also delighted with the use of simple blue train track as the Dragons "Wing Ribs". First rate parts utilization! About this MOC right here (Mega) I did not understand the mechanics of the light color control. You show us how you activate it... but what the heck is going on inside? I would love to see THAT on video! Attack!
Meh, too much work to upload... I may do it in a month or two... To wake people up for my next build.

I am glad to hear it is a tie, and not at all surprised! I really could not choose between the two mocs! This is an excellent creation. The dragon is amazing (especially the wings). Your landscape fits perfectly. That stone structure is very well made. I hope you will make more dragon mocs. Congratulations on the tie!

Judging ok, lets just cut the chat and get down to business. Your dragon was far better than I was expecting as I have not seen much articulated works from you. I really liked the head and neck in particular, Menacing and smooth at the same time. I was not a huge fan of the wing fronts, I felt that unless you were going for an armoured look the snotted bricks made the wing-front just a little chunky. Overall dragon design I really liked, great techniques and you produced the look that you were wanting to. Dragon I give you 8/10. The landscape I was in two minds, either your ground is covered an inch in carbon or your rocks have no luminescence, the first is consistent with your trees, the second is consistent with the vast area the blackness covers. I felt a little DrkBley showing wouldn't have gone a miss. The Temple - Great stuff. Snot rocks - Excellent. Lava pool Ė really well executed detail. Landscape I give you 4/5. Overall opinion I give you 4/5. Your landscape and dragon complimented each other beautifully, the landscape is simple and thus draws your attention to the dragon, the dragon is semi camouflaged and thus draws your attention to the landscape. Though monochrome with red isnít some peoples taste, it does have a certain effect when used in creating dark stories. A job well done to you Deus, you produced a stunning build against a stunning competitor. ~Thoy

Ok! I'll start with the dragon: The wings, of course, are brilliant. I'm not sure I've ever seen wings on a dragon better than these. The head, neck and tail are also fantastic. The legs a little less so, they're so chubby I can hardly imagine them doing any real damage to it's prey, and kind of take away points from the "blood thirsty wyrm" image, and give them to the "puff the magic dragon" side. That though, is easily overlooked, and with wings like those, there is no way I could give him less than 8 points. So 8/10 it is. Diorama: The rockwork here is great, very complex. While the landscape isn't really complex at all, I think it's exactly the look you were going for, and I really can't think of another way to achieve that look. The lava/blood pool is very nice, especially the bubbles. 4/5 for diorama. Personal opinion: While I do like the video (and unlike the others, the music) it would be great to have pictures as well. It's really annoying trying to find a certain picture of a certain angle in a video. Overall, the build is clean, and well thought out, also the ginormous write up was thoroughly enjoyable. 4/5 for personal opinion. I am honored to be a judge!

Good day Mr. Otiosus! To start things off, I would like to say "well done" to you and your opponent for whipping out two gorgeous creations! This is one of the better MOCoffs I have had the pleasure of judging. ----- Because this competition was centered around the dragon, I shall begin there. The thing I liked most about your dragon was the gorgeous wings. Very smooth fit, and the spears/swords for bones within the membrane is a terrific idea. One major critique would be the toes. Stormbringer did a fantastic with his feet, using the black teeth, while I was slightly underwhelmed with your minifig hands. The head on yours is also beautiful! The shaping of the side and the eye is very professional. The technique for the neck/tail works well. I am not too sure about the white hands lining the spine, though I can see why you chose them. I also would've preferred a much better base for the dragon. Even doing a whole new patch of black landscape for the bottom. I also like how you chose to put him off of the main diorama. Ultimately though, your dragon has earned you a... 7/10 ... Dragon aside, lets look at the diorama. My biggest nitpick with yours is that it is so monochromatic. Black, Grey, and Red don't do too well for dioramas. It is best to throw in some more colors and variation. Undoubtedly the best part of your creation in my eyes, is the rocks. While underdone in some parts, and a little blocky in others, it blends together so beautifully. The black structure is a very simple yet effective building. The light adds a ton to the scene though. Not a huge fan of the trees, simply because I can't really see them against the black background, and because they are generally so over used. The blood(?) lake is a great touch, to remove some of the black monotony. I also like how you chose to layer the diorama at different heights. Some more terrain may be needed though, because it looks a tad flat. Anyhow, most things said, I shall award you a really solid ... 3/5... Now for personal opinion, I shall simply give both you and Stormbringer... 4/5 ... Why? Simply because I would like to think that judging comes down to build quality and not to personal tastes. (For example, if I thought Stormbringer was a nicer guy, I could dock some points from your side and add some to his, or if I thought that you would pay me some money when all is said and done, I would give you some points and take some away from him. I know that things like color/building style/and presentation are all apart of the personal opinion, but my only nitpick was the color (and the music for the movie :P) both of which were small enough for me to give you a 4/5)... So there you go mate. As you can see, I was pretty strict with my judging. Mostly because I think if I gave you a 5, then anything better than yours would get the same thing as you did. But still, .... 14/20 ... is a very solid score and one that you should be well proud of.

Dragon 9/10 points, diorama 3/5 points, personal opinion (presentation, style, purism, focusing points...) 3/5 points. Total 15/20 Very impressive work! The dragon is excellent, especially the wings. The use of minifig utensils in the wings is fantastic, and I like how full and dragon-like they are. The head is also fantastic, and I really like how you did the eyes. My favourite bit has to be the tusks, they're just like the black dragon from Dungeons & Dragons. The neck is also good, and I like the body. However, the legs seemed a tad chubby, and I'm not a fan of the blunt bit at the end of the tail. The diorama is good, and the light up part was a clever idea that works well with the dark build. I also like the lava pool, however those grey slivers at the edges really annoy me. The temple is good, especially the textured pillars, and the use of minifig stands. Unfortunately, you didn't tile the stands, which would have been nice. The rocks are superb, however there are a few too many studs showing. The black terrain looks great, and it actually looks good with all the studs showing. I also like the burnt trees. My personal opinion is 3/5. I really, really like the colouration, it's very draconic. However, all the deficiencies mentioned above are just noticeable enough to detract a point. Also, the video presentation is inferior to photos in my opinion, and the music had to be muted (It's just not my style). Great work, and good luck in the MOC-Off!

Incredible! This entry is just the kind that you could win with. I love the diorama, with its black-ness and deathly feeling. The dragon has the perfect feel for a dark dragon. Such a magnificent design. He's exactly what a dragon should look like. His spines, body structure, and head are incredibly well made. What I most like about this guy are his wings. While Stormbringer had an excellent entry, I think Deus' entry spars it very well. Stormbringer's colors are more exciting, but I like a lot of the technics with the minifig body parts all over this one. I think both entries are matched very well, but I think I'm rooting for Deus on this one. Good luck to you both, though! :D

Fantastic! The dragon is great, and it has an awesome draconic colour scheme. The wings might have been better as dark green, but it would be ridiculously difficult to do that! I like how gapless the wings are, and the head's terrific. There seems to be something missing, either on the neck or body that I just can't place though. The landscape's phenomenal, and I like the light-up temple. You used the minifig stands nicely, however I think you should have tiled the studs. The rocks are amazing, especially the angled bits. The lava pool looks really good, although I can see light grey at the edges in some parts. All-in-all this is a worthy entry, great work!
