Category 11: Myths and Legends

My take on the category is about the not-so-known myth surrounding the Griffon and their enemies, the Arimaspi .

The Greeks believed that far in the north in the land of Scythia there is a large abundance of gold. However there is also these large birds called Griffons (not Gryphons) who safeguards this treasure.

Legend also tells the story about the one-eyed people, Arimaspians who had an on-going battle with the Griffins who guarded the gold.

The Arismaspi ride on horseback and attempt frequent raids to steal the gold, hence beginning the hostility between the two groups.

Because of these birds it is difficult to get to the gold.

These creatures have a close resemblance to the Cyclops, which is probably the same since it was the Greeks who first came up with them.

The body of the griffin was that of a lion, while the head and wings were those of an eagle.

The Griffons have had this love gold (and other such metals) similar to dragons in a way, where they they hoard it in caves.

It is not known though if it is they who mine the gold or steal it from others.
