David and Goliath
About this creation
2012 MocAthalon
Team Jigsaw

Category: Forced Perspective
Team: Team Jigsaw

1 Samuel 17:4 "A champion stepped out from the Philistine ranks; his name was Goliath, from Gath; he was six cubits and one span tall."

1 Samuel 17:44 "The Philistine said to David, 'Come over here and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the wild beasts!'"

1 Samuel 17:45 "David retorted to the Philistine, 'You come to me with sword, spear and scimitar, but I come to you in the name of Yahweh Sabaoth, God of the armies of Israel, whom you have challenged."

Notes:

Wanting to do something a little different from normal LEGO forced perspective, I realized that this category was perfect for creating the story of David and Goliath, which I've always wanted to see rendered in LEGO. Along with the perspective illusion, there is also normal forced perspective for the foreground, mountains and the rest of the Philistines on the hills in the distance.

This was a really fun category to build for, and I've been tinkering away at it from the start of the competition. One of the biggest difficulties in this build was getting the camera angle, aperture and focus correct, and then making sure that neither the camera nor the set pieces moved! I'm glad that this entry is finished, because my camera is free at last to take photos of other creations!

Here's a complementary behind the scenes photo to show how distorted the build is in reality. You can see some of the discarded sections from this MOC lying just out of the fixed camera frame:

Quoting Blake Sp. This is epic the forced perspective is amazing! Do you think I could use your idea in a LEGO David movie?

Good one. I like how you made david small without making him look like he was behind.

Most of the forced perspective is interesting - though, my eyes had a hard time figuring out that David wasn't just supposed to be far away, but that he was supposed to be smaller opposed to the mighty Goliath. Sorry about that little bit.

At first I thought you just made a very small figure for David, but then I saw the other picture and I was like, O_O WOAH. you should teach me your techniques, I would really appreciate it, but I doubt I live anywhere near you, so... nevermind that.

Wow. Perfect execution of scale. If I didn't know better I'd think this was photoshopped. The curves on the background hills are epic as well. Great job here!
