Waikiki Wonders
About this creation
For 2012 MocAthalon
Team Common Elements in Tropical Paradise

Okay, so I lived in Hawaii for seven years... therefore I can tell you that every character found in this MOC can absolutely be found somewhere among the beaches. (Well except for one maybe.) This actual scene however is my jam-packed presentation of that experience placed in front of my interpretation one of Waikiki's famous hotels. Full disclosure: There are currently no local campers living on Waikiki beach, but they can be found on others. So I guess this MOC is also a social statement about the plight of the Hawaiians. If you've been there or lived there, you know what I mean.

Blue tarp camp flying the Hawaiian flag, newly arrived pale tourists at center, beach fisherman with lines full out and a fire ready to cook the catch.

Detail of the ubiquitous ABC store.

Lanai (deck) walk characters found along the beach, including some "entrepreneurs" and a guy who had too much of something, resting against the famous rainbow tower.

Detail of blue tarp camp and its inhabitants hooking up for some afternoon relaxation. Parrot guy up on the lanai in back entertaining tourists.

Full view of the lanai walk and all its characters.

Island resourcefulness at its best! Repurposing parts, including local bus stop signage.

Tourists working on a slow burn while the kids perfect their sandcastle skills.

Don't forget the whale watcher in the upper balcony with her binoculars. Or is she a stalker girlfriend who followed her ex to the island? Hmmm....

Quoting Laurene Johnson nice job on realistic green coconuts. tired of seeing brown coconuts out of husks on trees.
Thanks. Yeah, guess most people don't know they're usually more green while on the coconut palm unless you've lived near them.

Quoting Randy R Wow, nice depiction of the Hilton Hawaiian Village. I think that was the same ABC store that I went to everyday when I was there. :)
Thanks. Yeah, those ABC stores are on every block!

Quoting Lori Woodel Aloha! I was wondering when I would see this hotel in Lego! How about the pink hotel and Diamond Head to go with it!
I did a Diamond Head once, on Hawaii TV (KITV 4 I think) when I was 10 years old. They were interviewing me for the LEGO 50th anniversary contest I was a finalist in... haven't done one since. But it was cool, because they showed my build and then faded to a shot of the real Diamond Head.. looked pretty close.

Quoting Andre Benjamin I went to Honalulu two years ago, this is exactly how I remember it! Love the ABC store, and if that one building is supposed to be the rainbow tower from the Hilton Resort, I stayed right across from it! Absolutely love this!
Quoting Elk Guard Wow, what a great scene!
Quoting Luke, Builder of the Awesome I love the detail you put into this!

Quoting Nick Pascale One more time the FRIENDS line makes it's way into the Men(boys) Zone! The MOC is colorful and the attention to the mini-figures MOSs is wonderful! You utilized almost every area of LEGO that makes this very successful! the combination of the Collectible Mini-Figures and the FRIENDS line and using the regular line make this an exciting MOC to look at! Your story and sharing you time in Hawaii made this special!!! If I were a part of the MOCathalon I'd give you a perfect score!!! GOOD LUCK!!!!

Quoting StoveTop Creator Amazing... and just when one thinks there is nothing much more one can do with palm trees... you reinvent them! :)
Thanks. Just tried to make them look as close to the ones you see there with the young green coconuts and the dropping fronds that haven't browned yet. The city usually comes out and takes the coconuts and fronds before they brown and fall on the tourists!
