It's been a long time since I've made a new car - over three months - but here it is: the convertible version of the beautifully shaped 458 Italia.
About this creation
I've loved the Ferrari 458 Spider's design ever since I first saw pictures of it. So that's part of the reason why I decided to build one. I love the fact that it's got a retracable hardtop (they look so much nicer than soft tops); it's the first mid-engine production car with one.
I made this car, which I finished late last year, for an official LEGOŽ contest entry. Since I'd be entering it to the contest, I decided not to post it anywhere on the Internet so that they won't be suspicious of me stealing the photos.
But because the deadline was March 10th, I decided that now it was "safe" to be posted. I initially wanted to wait for the results before posting it, but I was really dying to post this! As you can see, it's the very first car that I've included a working roof. It was a huge challenge for me, but I managed to complete it. I borrowed a few techinques from Ryan Link's Ferrari 458 Italia.
Exterior
A couple pictures with the roof up.
Interior
Opening Parts
I wasn't able to make the engine because the roof took up too much space in the back.
You can see how I made the headlights without a 1/2 plate gap. It was nowhere near being easy!
Roof
Here we have a sleek convertible. The clouds seem like they're coming, but there's nothing to worry about...
...the driver can still stay nice and dry!
It's stored directly behind the interior.
Details
The headlights are glow-in-the-dark, but I was unable to capture a good picture of it glowing.
I also found a way to mount the wheels onto the axles in such a way so that they stick out 1/2 a plate less than normal. I used a gear.
I'm quite pleased with how this build turned out; I think it's my best yet, and I hope you do too. Thank you for visiting!
I really do like this, the front is great, looks exactly right, and the roof is amazing. The only thing I don't like is the windscreen, looks a bit 'cartoony' as in my opinion its a bit tall. Maybe its just me. Anyway, super stuff!

ps i rated the engine that high because of the convertible feature makes it to hard to do ;)

Excellent. What is your favorite car? This is just a masterpiece!!!!!
It used to be unquestionably the Enzo Ferrari; but now that the Ferrari 458 is out, it might be that too. But which comes first I have no idea right now.
Hey, very good creation! And I remember you told me to make my cars loose some studs so they could look smoother. Well, I made it. Go to my page and check the "Ferrari Le Mans 1970", I think that you'll like xD
Well, it stinks you didn't win. I have had similar luck with my Flying Airport. But I wouldn't worry to much. After all, I am fairly certain that you had the best looking creation there.
Thank you for the support everyone! I really enjoy checking my email to find comments left on my MOCs. Stay tuned for my latest new car (might be posted tonight)!

Excellent take on an excellent car! How did the Lego competition go?
Not so well; I lost. But I'm not sure what made the judges not like mine. The winners (for the vehicle category) weren't that good, in my opinion of course. So since I lost, I may have trouble fulfilling my plans of building an RC Bowler Nemesis. I probably won't be able to build it this summer as I had planned. Maybe next year, or the year after. We'll just have to wait and see. Thanks for the comment!
Awesome job! I love the front look and the Ferrari logo. The shaping is great, even with the roof closed. Sad that it doesn't have an engine, but still a easy 5/5! :-)
this is really nice, it looks like the real thing.BTW I need some tips for my next car so i was wondering if you could take photos as you are building your next MOC because i just cant make massive mocs. Thanks, :-)
That model looks awsome! To reply to your comment,My Sierra is powered with 2X XL motors:1 in the front for steering and the other for driving at the rear.I cant wait to see yours!:-))

And here it is, finally! I've been looking forward to seeing this, and I must say, it is quite impressive. I do think that the angle of the windshield may be a bit steep, causing the roof to be a little high, but the fact that you managed to fit in a working retractable roof is just fantastic. It is such a beautiful car, and you have captured it well. Good luck in the contest!
Thank you! Yes, I realized that it's a bit too tall. But I fixed that (the first two pictures were taken long after the other ones, and the windshield is a tiny bit lower, making the roof lower too. I was too lazy to re-take all the other pictures though. I'll probably write in this MOC the results once they release them, probably anytime now. -LB Jr.

Agree with Mortal below, a beautiful build! A hard car to do justice but you've managed it really well. Personally I'd have black seats as they blur a little with the bodywork being red, but that doesn't make it any less of a 5 star build. Awesome job and good luck in the contest! 5/5
Yes, I do agree about the seats, but I would've had to buy more parts so that's why I made them red.

I've been waiting so long for you to post this, and now it's finally here! In my opinion, the back is the best part of this car - it's just so accurate. The convertible roof is amazing, and you still managed to keep the shape of the car when the roof is up. 5/5 :D
Thank you! I hope to bring my skill to a new level. :)

Hi, I completely agree with Ape about the seats but other than that this is an absolute cracker. Oh you might want to check this out - http://thelegocarblog.wordpress.com/. Congrats you've been blogged :D
Oh wow! You have absolutely no idea how pleased I am! If you could see me right now, you'd see a HUGE smile on my face!

Superb car - beautifully crafted and I love that roof! Congrats on the blog post - this deserves it!
I'm glad you like it! It took me a long time to finish the roof (partly because I got frustrated, resulting in this car being somewhat smashed). Thank you!
