5867 Wheel Loader
This Wheel loader is alternate #19 of Creator set 5867 Super Speedster.
About this creation
Just 1 more to go... Number 19 didn't go as fast and smooth as the forklift alternate. Even though I know the inventory pretty much by heart of set 5867, sometimes it's still a challenge to use the parts to their best. The problem with the wheel loader was that I wanted to include the same functionality as the real thing. When you want to include functions with a limited amount of pieces and still make it look authentic, this is no easy feat. Luckily there are many different shape and types of wheel loaders, so there is a little bit of freedom. After a full afternoon of sweat and tears, this is the final result, and even though it's not perfect, I'm quite happy with it.

Wheel loaders are used to dig and transport all kind of materials, but mostly sand,... or in this case some small LEGO pieces.

There is a big engine on the rear-end to compensate for the heavy load up front.

The steering is quite unusual, with the rotation point right under the cabine.

Another function is of course the shovel that can tip, similar to the real thing.

It was not easy to get the articulation of the arms as accurate as possible. In the end the loader can even lean on them, carrying its own weight.

The next challenge was to create a convincing shape on the back that didn't look too bulky and still had a bit of styling.

Reaching to the sky, similar to a begger... or, ehm, a digger.

The structure underneath which shows a bit better how I managed to get the articulation of the steering to work. This was one tricky build!

I'm pretty pleased with the end result. Just one more alternate to go from this set to get to #20. Would that milestone be reached..?

Hi Nathanael. I work on building sites so I can confirm that this is very accurate. The functions are very clever especially the steering. I like it a lot and I can see it was a challenge with only a limited amount of functional pieces. “Please Sir can I have some more?” (In reference to the begging picture) well at least one more ;). 20 from one set would an amazing feat and I can’t wait to see what you come up with next. Thanks for your comments on my latest. The GT40 is not as pretty as I would have liked but I will be posting it soon. I will also build another alternate soon I promise ;). I have been researching the new creator sets to determine which one to buy but I am not happy with their inventories. I do have an idea for the Fast Flyers set but I need to retrieve all the pieces from my collection. I hope to start it soon. Happy building and good luck with #20 it is going to be massive challenge but I am confident it is going to be a cracker. No pressure ;)
