About this creation
Galaxy Today was given unprecedented access to one of the planetary platoons located in a rural sector of the Confederacy. The platoon is tasked with law enforcement, search and rescue, local defense and settler support. The unit featured here is an older unit using older equipment that shows signs of repair and upkeep, yet despite the age of the equipment, (the mech is a Variant B of the venerable Glamis class) it still was of interest to our reporter as it had one of the first Magnetic Resonance Interface Pilot control and operations hardware systems installed. The MRIP or mind-ripper as it is nicknamed, uses magnetic resonance to read the brain of the pilot and to convert those signals into commands the mech interprets as operational modes. Over time the MRIP interface has come to boast the fastest response times and durability excepting only systems that use direct interface or purely cybernetic-organic continuity interfaces.
New Caledonia is a relatively new colony located on the outer rim of the Hub. It features a planetary system rich in resources including an Earth class planet, rich asteroid belts and three gas giants. Exports range from metals and alloys, to a wine that has become a favorite at the tables of dignitary's galaxy wide. To maintain the peace and repel pirates on such a rich and distant planet, such responsibility falls upon the men and women of the Caledonian Defense Force and the Planetary Militia.
Formed initially on Old Earth during the restoration led by the Metal Legion, the Caledonian Defense Force traces its roots to the Tennessee First Garrison, a historic unit well recognized during it's time for both its technological edge and weapons systems as well as the valor of its soldiers. The Consortium that funded the colony to New Caledonia was well aware of the need for a strong planetary defense and offered the job to the First as a way to continue the traditions and influences of the Legion as the UNE and COP grew and the Hub wars began.
The standard platoon consists of the mech, a multi-terrain Armored Personnel Carrier and the single seat military ATV. Two Mech Pilots, the APV driver, eight infantry, two mechanics, and five to twelve ATV operators as well as the platoon commander make up the unit. The Gator platoon has 7 ATV operators and is led by Lieutenant Malcolm Nory. The Gator's received recent citations for rescuing the members of a small village which experienced flooding and the loss of all personal property, but due to the fast reaction and efforts of the platoon, every civilian was rescued. Also it was the Gator's that held the line in a pirate attack several years ago that led to the capture of Captain Larue au Gaurre aka Walther Pence and sixty of his crew following two days of intense fire fights covering nearly 400 kilometers prior to relief by Archon's Own Guard units.
