Meanwhile, in the future....
About this creation

There's nothing quite as irritating an an alien invasion, even if the aliens happen to be other humans by a mysterious freak chance. Of course one of the staples of these invasions is the point at which the nasties start landing troops on your planet, or dump their own aircraft in to the atmosphere to really mess up your day. The SU-298 дракон (Dragon) High Altitude Interceptor is designed to deal with both of those problems.

This two-seater, hypersonic aircraft is capable of being deployed from conventional airfields, sea-based carriers, or dropped in to the atmosphere by orbiting assault ships.
Based from the ground and sea, the SU-298 has an effective operational radius of about 15,000 km with an operational ceiling at about 200km. Dropped from high orbit the aircraft can reach anywhere around an Earth-sized planet, so long as the atmosphere is agreeable.

Despite having a maximum speed of Mach 5 and a cruising speed of about Mach 1.5, the Dragon is capable of landing back on a carrier so long as it is equipped with a magnetic capture system. (arresting wires are so 20th century)

Two Scramjets power the SU-298 long with its missile payload, pilot, and gunner through the stratosphere.

An internal weapons bay cuts down on fuel space - limiting the operational time frame of the interceptor to about an hour's worth of hypersonic flight - but allows for a much more streamlined profile. This is also my favorite picture, since the background seems to look so nice with the plane.

At this point I got too tired to keep nicely editing the pictures, but here's the missile bay. The Dragon is usually outfitted with air to air missiles, but occasionally the craft will carry guided nuclear ordinance to solve big problems on the ground when big problems need to be solved quickly.

I'm pleased that I managed to fit three missiles in there.

Back detailing. I've never cut a sticker before now....

Expanding gasses from the combustion chamber are channeled through these vanes over and under the elevators. This allows the Dragon to execute incredible snap turns, but generally this is unadvised since most pilots don't want their spines compressed to about 6 inches.

Opening the thrust reversal passages at Mach 5 is also regarded as a poor choice.

Well there you have it folks, my newest plane. I actually had it sitting around for a little under a month but I was too lazy to take good pictures of it.

Things I like about this:
-The nice, solid, red stripes on the wings. I think it's a really nice highlight.
-I opted out of using the usual canopies. I probably could sculpt the canopy better with a little more work though.
-I took the time to make the bottom look presentable
-The model is both solid and swooshable
-It's an appropriate size for a minifigure scale aighter.

Still need to work on:
-The very back isn't amazing. Too flat I think.
-It still looks like a sausage with wings from the side. Less so though.

Thanks for stopping by! Also - man, I haven't said this for ages...

Quoting Matt the Backward One Congratulations on 20 "I-Like-It's!" and that cockpit is beggining to grow on me.
I wish I had enough dark, smokey glass. Too late now though. This is apart to feed my hover doodle.

Beautiful machine! Love it for the old-schoolish built canopy, all its little functional features and the Mass Effect like elevators! ;-) ~Marc

YHUS! You said it! I loved continuing that tradition... Anyways, this is bueatiful! I was a little worried that you had given up on it when I saw the cockpit (which I'm still not satisfied with) but now I see that this tame beast is a speed devil cruising through the stratosphere! Now I have to build one myself. I'm highly jealous of the angles you're able to achieve. The shape of the top of bottom/back is just stunning. Can you sell me a couple? 5/5!

Quoting Parrington Levens My kind of fighter! Did you know the Germans were experimenting with rocket planes in the 30's to do exactly this. Fly up into lower orbit coast around until they coud dive back down and bomb the U.S. The scientists had even built a model of the thing but it was deemed too expensive. Food for thought...

First thing: Lovely main wings, very sleek. Second thing: Excellent editing, very appropriate main pic. I also like the slots left open near the back, but that's just me.
