A Portrait of a Boy With Blonde Hair
From the Vintage 2012 Collection
About this creation
This lucky birthday boy is having his bedroom completely redone in a LEGO Star Wars theme. From the paint and decoration on the walls to the fiber optic lights (stars) in the ceiling, his 20"x20" portrait is the finishing touch in the theme. I didn't let my own kids see this one ...I don't want them getting any ideas!

The finished portrait sitting on my desk (above). Detail views (below.)

Quoting Paul Romano Stupendous! Large-scale mosaics such as yours always fascinate me, mainly due to the complexity of the planning. In fact, I'm considering making a 20X20 black, grey, and white mosaic for my sister's first-year wedding anniversary and the amount of planning I have to do (even with the help of a render program) is pretty intimidating. Honestly, I don't even know how you do it!
Thank you! Try a few smaller, simple mosaics first. Each one should be a little more complex than the last. Build up to the portrait you want to produce, don't start there.

Quoting Thoy Bradley Very nice Dave. Question: do you have a custom colour palette that you reduce the image to before scaling down the image size? I want to learn your technique so I can do a mosaic of my wedding photo when its done. Cheers, ~Thoy
I wish! I've tried, but I can't figure it out, so I do it the hard way ...eyeball it! It's something that you get the hang of after a few goes at it.

I am going to echo the amazement of the Mastermind there. It is downright tragic, (that's right, tragic), that you aren't getting more attention with this work. You have painted with LEGO! It's spectacular. This is the manipulation of a medium by the hand of a true artist. It is well done, better than the vast majority of what this site hosts, and I thank you for sharing it with us.

I'm always floored by mosaics of this quality. My brain doesn't work the right way to imagine how to do them, so this gets a lotta respect from me.

Quoting The Mastermind of Lego Four likes..... WHAT IS WRONG WITH MOC PAGES? Amazing I could hardly believe this was made of lego. Needs like 100+likes
That is hillarious! I often wonder the same thing about this place. Though, it's a simple answer really, builders here are more focused and interested in vignettes and dioramas featuring minifigures and story lines than they are interested in mosaics/portraits and sculpture. The minifigure reigns supreme here on MOCpages ...and that's OK! Thanks for the kind words.

Wow this looks great. Is it the boy picture of the legendary musician Kurt Cobain from Nirvana? It surely looks like it. Well done btw:-)

Quoting Blake Baer Great work as always Dave! I am not too certain about the coloring on the mouth though. It strikes me that continuing the tan lines with dark tan accents would've made it a bit more realistic. Still, the builder's preference always prevails. Great work!
Thanks Blake, I have to agree with you too about the mouth. However, a little extra color was wanted. My biggest challenge was the hair. Getting his platinum blonde hair to contrast against his fair skin color was quite a stumbling block for me.
