Rebuild of ZX Project pt2: Instabilte Orchestre
Part 2 of my rebuild project. Gravity decides to grief me.
About this creation
Ah, gravity. Thou art cruel.

The NS-MAS is a tad heavy. Turns out, ball joints don't like heavy so the NS-MAS became a virtual rag doll. Sure, it could stand, but just looking at it wrong would make the knee joint crumple and the other joints would follow suit.

So, after reevaluating the skeletal structure, I replaced the knee joints with click joints. This improved the stability by a noticeable margin, however the pelvic and ankle joints are still a bit finicky.

Nonetheless, I decided to try my luck and pose the bugger again for you all to see.

Please note that the arms are placeholders. They're there to add necessary additional stress-weight to make sure the NS-MAS is stable in various poses. Only one is armored because I don't have the parts for the other, but it seems armor ended up a relative moot point.

The unarmored leg is a placeholder too. The actual skeletal leg looks completely different. I don't have the parts to make a second one.

Anyway, enjoy some scale photos:

The NS-MAS units tower over the original MAS units. Compared to a minifigure, they're fairly enormous.

NS-MAS compared to Zetkaizer (which has most of its other leg now!).

NS-MAS Hub posing... for... you.... HUB! You call that a pose?!

Much better. See how flexible it is compared to the original MAS units? I hope to keep most of this flexibility through all future stability modifications.

The arms need some work too. Might have to use click joints here as well. Otherwise, these guys will never be able to wield any of their heavy weaponry.

Hmmm...

Creator's Further Notes

The NS-MAS design feels very Evangelion-y to me. I like that.

My next goals which will have to wait until the summer time will be to redesign the arms. I'd like to give the MAS wrists.

... Why am I not showing the cockpit? Not finished yet.

If you're down here, comment darn you!

yep go ratchet (click) joints on any robot or mech over 7 inches tall!

Ah, that's what I was talking about! Yeah, ball joint sucks when building heavy mechs (all my mechs are heavy, so I know the bad experience...), but you can still use them in the hip. The use of ball joints for the ankle may cause you a painful headache, but it worth the try. This unit is getting better every time I see it. A tip: When you changed the knee joint the upper leg stretched a bit off the armor. It'd be nice if you cover that. Keep the good work!

Quoting Rabid Goldfish Pretty good build. You finally got the proportions you needed for the torso, I see. It looks great, but given the size, you will probably have to go to click joints. I think the feet look a little off from the rest of the design though. Just my personal tastes, I guess. Anyway, great rebuild. ^Blub^
It always irked me when people comment on proportions being "wrong". Since when does a humanoid machine need to be 1:1 proportioned to a human? Regardless, the NS-MAS are "hybrid-real". They need to be svelte and nimble. I'll probably be using click joints for the shoulder and elbow joints. I'm probably going to keep the pelvic and ankle joints as ball joints unless it starts getting too difficult to work with. As for the feet, they do look a little weird but they actually have utility to them. The feet can spread out into a 3-toed form that provides additional stability on uneven terrain. It's not used often, but it's there. I might take a stab at a new design that incorporates this better.
