Griswold Building - Detroit, Michigan
About this creation
This is a minifig scale model of the Griswold Building also currently known as the Griswold Senior Apartments located at 1214-1230 Griswold street in downtown Detroit. The prototype was designed by famous Detroit area architect Albert Kahn who also designed modern factories for Ford and other automakers. The building was completed in 1929 just at the end of Detroit's first golden age. Originally an office building, the Griswold Building was later coverted to apartments for seniors. It has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Building Statistics:

  • Construction Start: January 12, 2007.

  • Construction End: June 07, 2007.

  • Current Status: Apartments.

  • Height: Midrise.

    • Roof: 89 bricks high (2.9 feet / 0.89 meters).

    • Architectural Top: 96 bricks (3.0 feet / 0.92 meters).

    • Spire/Antenna: n/a

  • Foorplate: 97 x 50 studs.

  • Floors: 11 (the real building has 12).

  • Weight: 20 pounds / 9 Kg.

  • Portability: Building separates into two modules for transport to MichLTC shows.

  • Colors:

    • Light gray (old): lower facade and top floor accents.

    • Brown (old): upper facade and sides.

    • Red-Brown: spandrels (vertical sections between windows on upper floors).

    • Tan: rear walls.

    • Light blue gray: window sills.

This structure will be displayed, along with several others of mine, as part of the gaint ILTCO Lego train layout display at the NMRA NTS 2007 in Detroit on July 28-30th.

Upper portion of the front facade. These stories are faced with brick on the real building and with limestone accents on the top floor.

The lower three stories of the prototype are faced with limestone. On the third floor is promenade with skylights.

View from a nearby building across the street.

   The complete facade.

The rear of the Griswold building is rather plain as it faces an alley and the backs of the Merchants Row buildings on Woodward Avenue.

A fictional fire escape added to provide detail on the south side of the building. The real building's south wall is obscured by the adjacent Chamber of Commerce Building.

The small structure next to the Griswold Building is currently the Detroit Pizza Factory. A faded sign somewhat similar to the one depicted here is on the real building.

Several stores occupy the street level of the Griswold Building.

Another view of the entire building. The foreground should be taken up by my Lego version of the Chamber of Commerce Building which I have not yet built.

A photo of the real building I took from Capital Park, so called because Michigan's State Capital was here briefly before it was moved to Lansing. As you may notice, I used a bit of selective compression on the Detroit Pizza Factory building. On the extreme right of the picture can be seen part of the David Stott Building, a structure that I have also modeled in Lego.

Another of my photos showing the the real building's upper floors. Again the top of the David Stott Building can be seen to the right.

Hi Jim - WOW!! This is really great!! The detail in this model is awesome. I totally understand the amount of time and effort that went into putting this model together. And thanks for adding all of the statistics. It really helps to put the whole building into perspective. I really look forward to seeing more models from you!! Please do keep them coming. Oh - also, the setting is GREAT!! I had to really look to see that it was Lego and not pitures of the real building. :-)

If I had instructions, I would consider posting them. I simply took a bunch of photos, worked out the structure's proportions, placed a lot of bricklink orders, and started building.

That's kind of cheap; taking a picture of an actual building and claiming you made it. Just kidding - this looks very realistic. Excellent work.
