Come visit! This sculpture and 26 others are touring the U.S. now through 2014. Over 25 larger-than-life sculptures created with nearly half a million LEGO pieces! Read more and come visit!
This life-size sculpture of a Moth Orchid is nearly 3 feet tall and contains 2,300 LEGO pieces. (Yes ... lots of teeny tiny pieces!)
All of my LEGO sculptures are built with regular off-the-shelf pieces, and there is a very limited selection of pink out there. I was forced to use only four different types of pink rectangular bricks to make this orchid look as realistic as possible. This made the sculpture even more complicated to build... on top of the fact that it is so thin, tall, and jiggly! (More than once I found myself crawling under the desk running after a half-smashed petal or two.) :)
The sculpture was installed in April 2012 at Reiman Gardens in Iowa as part of my traveling exhibition, Nature Connects. In October 2012 it will travel to it's next location, so stay tuned for updates!
The entire sculpture was assembled in my New York City art studio, then custom-crated in museum-quality exhibition crates for my new show, Nature connects, which is currently touring the United States.
As always a beautiful creation!
I have 2 questions 4 u, Sean:
1.) will there be another Long Island City exhibit this May as there was last May and will you be a part of it?
2.) Have you seen my tribute to HEATHER BRAATEN yet? I hope you think I did a good job in honoring her!

This is brilliant, Sean. I love the way you have played with the colors to give the illusion of one color fading into the next. I was surprised that it was made of so many pieces until I looked more closely at it. And yes, as a hat, it is just lovely.
Very nice. Its funny because only a few days ago, I decided I was going to build sculptors again out of basic bricks and you came along with these fantastic designs, which have inspired me. Keep em coming.
