Dragonfly
About this creation
Come visit! This sculpture and 26 others are touring the U.S. now through 2014. Over 25 larger-than-life sculptures created with nearly half a million LEGO pieces! Read more and come visit!

This larger-than-life dragonfly has a 4 foot wingspan, contains 6,535 LEGO pieces and took 4 weeks to design, build, and glue. A steel frame elevates it above the marshland where it hovers along like a real dragonfly.

The sculpture was installed in April 2012 at Reiman Gardens in Iowa as part of my traveling exhibition, Nature Connects. In October 2012 it will travel to it's next location, so stay tuned for updates!

Close-ups

The entire sculpture was assembled in my New York City art studio, then custom-crated in museum-quality exhibition crates for my new show, Nature Connects, which is currently touring the United States.

Looks amazing! I also noticed that I have been fooled to believe that you only use bricks but in reality you only make it look that like you do - I have to go rethink a few things now :) But still, great work!

Its hard for me to dig something that relies on glue, the wing design is simple, and not practical Lego. Nice build, but honestly not true-Lego design. Sorry, Sean, much respect to your skills, but this last display of yours has fell short for me. Chris

Quoting Lego Obsessionist It's a pity the stand couldn't be Lego, too,
It needed to be bolted to the ground and withstand tornados. Somehow steel seemed like the best option :)

This would be perfectly life sized if you were modeling a prehistoric dragonfly! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griffenfly

It's a pity the stand couldn't be Lego, too, condidering that this is a "smaller" sculpture. Very cool, though.

Very nice work! I love Dragonflys! I recently built one but mine's just a tad smaller than yours lol http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/319683. What I would do to have the bricks you have at you disposal ;-)
