WWII Half track
About this creation
The long anticipated WWII Halftrack. I have been waiting a while to post this. As you can tell from the main photo, I've been experimenting with GIMP. I think it turned out pretty good.

With 9 motors, this is the biggest creation I have made yet.

There are a few things that are off a little, but overall, I'm very pleased with it. Pointed to the sky, just imagine the noise as these guns fire off, slamming through an enemy plane.

As you can see, the back springs are compressed pretty far. This is because of the weight. I have:

  • 2 battery boxes

  • 2 XL motors to drive the track

  • 4 m motors connected together to drive the wheels

  • 1 m motor for steering

  • 1 m motor for turret turning

  • 1 m motor for gun lift

Steering motor, and quad front shocks to hold up the weight.

3 IR receivers 3 channels are devoted to drive motors

The pivot motor, with worm gear drive, it isn't very solid, but it works quite well. Also the two battery boxes. On with the red switch, and the other below the pivot motor. I also have two switches, the one on the left is for the lift motor in the turret. The other is to get 2IR receiver to reach the bottom battery pack.

This is my lift motor for the turret. Geared down to 1:216

Side view. It's pretty cramped

2 XL drive motors for the track. I geared them down to 1:2.779

Bottom, with drive line to the front. I used 4 m motors for the front drive system. I could have went and bought another XL motor or two, but I wanted to make a "Power block" out of the motors I already had.

I used 6 16 tooth gears to make sure I had even load distribution on the motors. The front drive is geared down to 1:8.337. I had to use my brain and do a little math on this creation to get the wheels and track to turn at the same speed. I calculated the circumference of the wheels, and the sprockets. This gave me the distance they traveled in one rotation, I then made a ratio of how many times the sprocket turns to one turn of the wheel. (2:1 if I remember right.) I then found this handy little web site from Sariel, that calculates gear ratios. It also gives you theoretical RMP, and torque outputs. All I had to do from there, was find a gear ratio for the wheels that double the RMP of the tracks.

The 360 degree spin

The rear features a ladder to get up to the quad AAA gun. I did not have any pictures of the rear of one of these, so I just kinda made it up.

Top view.

Front features independent suspension.

Close up of gun.

I used 3 turn tables on this, one for the spin motion, and one for each set of guns.

Turret turns 360 degrees.

The suspension on the tracks. I broke one of my yellow shocks, so I put two grey ones on the back.

Looking down the guns.

Guns rotate all the way down. Imagine being infantry... this would be devastating.

Keep your eyes to the skies! Thanks for looking!!

Designing, and building (I do them at the same time) I think it took a good solid week of about 2-3hrs a day. so 14-21ish hrs

Quoting cyberfrank 2010 the proportions seems a bit off, but, the technical side is impressive! why 2 battery packs? 1 is heavy enough, balance? the video is nice with powered creations, well done!
Thanks. Um 2 battery packs for lots of power for all the motors.

Haha um they do fit, but they would be like dolls... It's close to a 1:17, 1:16 scale.. Thanks again everyone for the comments! I really like the mud guards too.

Quoting John Daniels Awe that makes sense. I didn't note the American flag before that's a cool technique to make it seem that it's waving in the wind. How do you overcome the creep in the guns caused by the turret rotating? Or is it not the same as 2 functions thru one turn table?
:D Thanks. Haha I'm suprised no one has told me the flag on the right side is backwards.. haha I didn't realize this untill I was editing pictures. There is no creep in the gun because, I put a seperate motor in the turret. I have a picture of it. so the only thing going through the turntable is the cord. pretty old school stuff.

Quoting 2ror ornot2ror This thing is bad to the bone!!! 8 pounds, really!! How can the frame not bend!!!
Haha, I over estimated the weight. It's closer to 5lbs. but I put most of the weight on the tracks, so there is no bending of the frame :O

Quoting DeTomaso Pantera Wow! Really nice HT! It looks great, I have to be honest I prefer the standard photos, but I think it would also look great in B&W or sepia. Love the gun turret, tracks and wheel arches. I feel the roofline could do with being as bit higher, as it is it kind of looks like a Hod Rod Half Track as it is, but thats's cool. Keep up the good work :-)
Thanks! I think I'll experiment with my photos some more. Now that you say it, it does kinda look like a hotrod :)

Quoting Ape Fight This is brilliant! Superb Technic functions (although I'm thoroughly confused as to how you ensure the wheels and tracks turn at the same speed) and good looking too, with some great details like the flags. The only thing I'd change is the front tyres, which look a bit wide for WW2. 5 stars, and all round excellent creation
Quoting John Daniels
The tires are a bit wide, but I didn't have skinner tires that big. As for the speed of the tracks, and tires, I have updated, and added some more pictures, It's kinda long, so I explained it in the moc, close to the top. Thanks for the comments

Good job, I recognized it immediately. I like the .50 guns a lot. The front should be a little shorter and slanted down, and these halftracks had no roof. Other than that, I like the off-roadey look of it and the slanted sides of the cab. Keep up the great work!
