Woody Woodpecker
About this creation
Meet Woody the Greater Spotted Woodpecker, The sixth in my British Bird Series.

I sometimes hear woodpeckers knocking away at trees from my apartment. They are pretty easy to spot with their red flashes and I think they are wonderful birds.

Thank you to everybody who has commented on my Birds so far I'm really loving building these and I'm very happy to hear all your nice comments :-)

I really struggled with Woodys legs and feet, the first few photos you'll notice they're a little too long but those Ice picks really help him to stake on that log :-)

I then had a eureka moment and shortened them and added the minifig hands to add the extra claws.

Woody had to be given wings as I think the woodpecker wings are very striking. I had to think about how to make him look like he was flying. I used some garden wire and tacked it to the ceiling and suspended woody from it. As you can probably see in some of these photos I was too lazy to edit the wire out, but I think the main photo was worth the hour of frustrating photoshopping :-)

Fly away Woody...

I am starting to get withdrawral symptoms from car building so there's one more bird to post after this one and I will take a little break from building things with wings and get back to the wheels ;-)

I will definately be re-visiting these as they are very enjoyable to build.

I'd like to build a Barn Owl and a whole host of tropical birds (A Toucan, a Blue Macaw, a humming bird and a parrot) to name a few.

Hope you like him and please let me know what you think.

Quoting Jon B Another excellent build in a wonderful series! Such clever accurate builds and wonderfully presented. I'm guessing you're pretty much at the top of the pecking order as far as bird builders go. Badum-tish :)
Haha good one Jon!! I like that! I plan to stay at the top of the Pecking order too. Once I've finished my current car project I will be building more. I'm thinking Birds of Prey, the first being the Barn Owl. Keep your eyes to the sky :-)

Man, this is spectacular! It looks SOO realistic! At first, I thought you just made two different kinds of birds, one with it's wings outstretched, and one with it's wings folded in. But when I looked closely, and continued scrolling down, I saw that IT WAS THE SAME BIRD! YOU are an amazing bird builder! I wish I had that skill. :( My skills lie in other directions, I hope.... Anyway, sweet bird, and continue the good work!

Another great creation. My only critique on this one is that I would like to see a bit longer and pointier beak, perhaps using the technique I used for the arms of Christ. Either way it is still excellent as usual.

I think this one is the best by far, fantastic wingspan, and the feet look great. A lot of builders use fig hands like this, but few pull it off like you did here. Very nice!
