LEGO Heavy Weapons
These are instructions for updated versions of three of my old guns: Desert Eagle; Jungle Carbine and SPAS 12, and also a completely new one: an AKS-74U!
About this creation
Well it's been a while, but I'm back!

There were a few months after I uploaded the Jungle Carbine when I thought I was done for good... an email from No Starch Press changed that completely though. After well over a year's work, we're proud to bring you LEGO Heavy Weapons - a book filled to the brim with instructions for a few of my favourite models!

As well as instructions, there's also a bit of history and a few building and instruction-making tips included, plus a bit more of my rambling...

I have to say that after coming back and having a look around MOCpages, the guns have dramatically improved! It seems to me that a lot of you don't even need this book at all and are perfectly happy building your own things... of course I still think you should all go out and buy it though, just to be on the safe side!

XML Brickink Parts Lists (download here)
The XML files are a quick and easy way of creating a Wanted List on Bricklink.com, in order to make the process of buying the pieces you need faster and more efficient. For each gun there are six files available, to cater for whether you want new pieces, used pieces or a combination of both, and also for if you want to be notified by email when new lots are posted for parts in your list.
Use the file that fits for you - for example, if you wanted the pieces for the AKS-74U, wanted to ONLY buy used pieces and also wanted to be notified about new lots, you should open "AK,Notify,Used.txt".
Go to bricklink.com/wantedXML.asp (you will need to login to your Bricklink account, or make one if you haven't already got one). Open the text file you want (they’re all in a zip file together), and simply copy and paste all the text from the file into the upload box on the Bricklink page. Click "Verify Items", and once the items have been verified, click "Upload File".
This completes the uploading process. By clicking "By Shop" tab in the "Wanted" section, you can find shops that have most (and if you've very, very lucky, all) of the pieces in the list - be careful though, as some Bricklink sellers have several different lots of the same part types, so you may need to do a bit of manual selecting to choose which lots you want to buy from those available (otherwise, you may end up accidentally buying multiple lots of the same sets of pieces).
Once you've sorted yourself out with a few sellers in order to obtain all the parts you need, buy the bricks and good luck building!

Anyway what are we waiting for? Here's some info on the guns included:

DESERT EAGLE
One of my oldest guns, this one is perfect if you're a little limited in pieces. It doesn't fire (if you are limited on pieces, you don't want to lose any!), but it makes up for it with a pretty realistic blowback action and the fact that it's probably the most accurate replica in the book. Re-designed completely from scratch, it's now even better than ever.

Length: 34 studs
Width: 4.5 studs
Height: 21 studs
Pieces: 382
Magazine type: Detachable box magazine with first round visible

AKS-74U
After the success of my AK-47 (and also because they're just plain awesome) I decided there had to be an AK replica of some sort in this book. Wanting to have a medium sized gun to compare against the others, the AKS-74U was the best choice as it's got a folding stock that makes it go even smaller! With thirteen bricks in its magazine, it's also got the largest ammunition capacity out of all the guns.

Length: 83.5 studs
Width: 9 studs
Height: 32 studs
Pieces: 792
Magazine Type: Detachable box magazine
Magazine Capacity: Thirteen 1×4 bricks

JUNGLE CARBINE
Next up is what could be called my 'flagship model' - this was my first decent, working replica, and the model that kick-started everything else. At least, the original one was. This model has actually been updated not only in looks but also inside. It's the same one as I wrote about here, and it's the only gun that hasn't been tweaked in some way since being posted online... because it didn't need to be! It's still the most powerful and most accurate of all my guns, ever. Separate instructions for the scope will be available for download soon, or you could just design your own!

Length: 120 studs
Width: 10.5 studs
Height: 21 studs
Pieces: 771
Magazine Type: Detachable box magazine
Magazine Capacity: Six 1×4 bricks

SPAS 12
Possibly the most brutal of all my weapons, this is an absolute beast of a gun. I had to tone down the complexity of the mechanism from what it was originally, but it's still the most intricate in the book. If you're up for a challenging build, you've got one.

Length: 94 studs
Width: 9 studs
Height: 26 studs
Pieces: 1049
Magazine Type: Tubular underbarrel magazine
Magazine Capacity: Nine 1×4 bricks

That's it for now! The book's available on Amazon; what are you waiting for?

Hey dude you my sir have some serios talent. I expessailly love you guns becuase you did not cheat, copy or had a plan book. I was about to stop Building guns, but you had given me sprit in building. I have only one tip if you make another gun, that you would please do more explaining of the mechanisim, for other people but I can clearly understand it but when I have to explain my modded (yours) gun to my freinds its a pain in a but but I bet you could do it. Thanks for coming back. Thanks for the inspireation, Wesley

I just finished building all of the guns in the book. Overall — very impressed. The guns not only look great, but I could see that you and the publisher went to great lengths to walk the builder through complex components in as few steps as possible. It reminded me of well made video games that first introduce you to small tasks and then challenge you to use that task again in a more complex way. This is so much more than using LDD to generate instructions. This must have taken a lot of work. Thank you! Here are a few of my favorite parts: * Pistol grip on the SPAS 12 is unreal. Those curved slopes (6191) are amazing. I'm ordering a few dozen more to replace all the other grips with those. * Folding stock on the AK is a lot more sturdy and functional than I expected. * The mechanisms on all of them were genius. Very clever. I especially like how you transfer the trigger action toward the front of the SPAS through the wall. Clever. Frustrations: * Lots more jams than I experienced with Xubor's NoStarch Lego book (BALG). I'm still working out the kinks to try to glue/file/hack my way toward a consistent fire every time. It seems every time I want to show the build to someone it jams and I have to take it apart to undo. +1 for Desert Eagle, I suppose. ;) * SPAS stock is awful. You mention as much in the book, but then you build an incredible stock for the AK. I have to think there's a better way. * The rubber bands in the book are shown with a ruler. But in actuality very different sizes are needed to work properly. This is more trial and error than necessary. Just tell us where the tension should be. And maybe how far each band will need to stretch when completed. Tips for other builders: * Glue the 1x2 plate to the Technic Axle/Pin Connector (41678) on the magazines for the Jungle Carbine and AK * Ditch the SPAS stock all together * Decrease misfires and jams on the SPAS by building a top plate to keep pressure on the trigger lift arms. They keep creeping up and fire the weapon. Maybe with weak rubber bands this would be fine, but if you're doing that you're reading the wrong book. * SPAS jams all over the place. Shave / File the technic connectors on the bolt so they pass through the first inch of the slide easier. Also glue the slide ramp (1x2 slope brick) on the bottom — mine kept falling off. * Glue the 1x6 tile to the pins on the AK trigger mechanism. It's too fragile and breaks off. (or was it the SPAS? Either way, it's the only tile piece in the trigger mechanism and it looks flimsy right away.) Anyone else have tips for how to avoid jams on these builds?

THE KING... IS... BACK!!! I found out about your guns well after you had quit and i always thought the lego gunsmith community lost its best developer since you were gone but now your back. HAIL TO THE KING BABY!!! On a different note, i was wondering if you could try and make a full auto assault rifle that runs off of a rubber band powered piston like thing? if you don't have the time, resources, or you just don't want to do it that's fine but it would be cool to see what you come up with. JACK.. IS... BACK!!!

Wow thats impressive! Its a shame that i found this right when my time as a gun builder came to a close... Anyway this is awesome! I had this idea that i could combine the reliability of the closed bolt mech and the compactness of the open bolt mech. Anyway now that your active, i owe you my thanks for giving me the inspiration to build a couple really cool guns as well as yours. I would nice if you built another gun too! Sorry for the comment, but all in all, if you ever like anything on my page, just know your the only reason it was possible. Thanks Jack!
