The Battleship Orion
About this creation
FINALLY! So I have been at this for the past two months. I generally build after my family has gone to bed, and thatís if my odd work hours donít get in the way, so a build of this size takes that much more time. And Iím sure that many of you can relate to spending a large amount of time building a part of your ship and finding that it doesnít work right with the rest of the ship so you have to tear it back down. Yeah. There was a bit of that, too.

But, I can say with no small amount of satisfaction, that it is finished. I have taken pictures in two different types of lighting, so that will explain why some look different than others. I liked how a lot of them turned out, and I couldn't decide which not to include, so I included them all. This work was inspired by, (no surprise here), Star Wars. I love how all of the ships have such intricate textures, so I wanted to bring that to this MOC. You may also notice some touches of the Frigate Redemption in the underside of the front section.

Okay, so I donít do dedications. I donít think Iím to the point in my skills where I can make dedications, but I do want to thank David Alexander Smith for inviting me into his micro group which was my main motivator for building this. I donít think I would have attempted this without that gesture. But enough talk. Without further ado, I present, The Battleship Orion.

I thought this was a nice dramatic shot.

A look at the length. It's about 70 studs long, if I counted right. If not, about 22.5 inches. I know that it doesn't technically qualify as a SHIP. But I'm going to call it that anyway..."Somewhat Huge Investment of Parts?" What do you think?

These are the docking bays. I'm calling this a micro build, though I don't think I can build something in a small enough scale to fit in those.

Some of the weaponry. There are three different sizes of cannons on this ship, to accomodate all comers.

A look at the middle of the ship. I imagine that this is a sort of breezeway that leads to the front portion of the ship.

A look at the underside of this ship. The underside from front to rear may be my favorite part of the build. Please try to ignore the stands. I usually try to make the stands an aesthetic part of the build, I just didn't have the pieces for it this time.

A look at the largest guns on the ship. I originally wanted one, much bigger gun, but I liked this design better. I built the larger gun...then tore it apart. One of those situations I mentioned earlier.

This is the rear portion of the ship. I like how the hinge work turned out along the sides here.

The main command deck. After this, there are a few shots that are just some dramatic looks at some of the parts of this build.

The rear of the ship. I like how the thrusters turned out on this one.

A couple parting shots.

Thanks for looking. Tell me what you think.

this is such a great ship so densely packed with detail. i could believe this exists in the SW universe easily. perhaps some time during the Old Republic... i enjoyed the scale a lot, especially that it's not overly huge by LEGO standards. those hanger bays? minifig hands on a 2x1 flat plate LOL

Wow. I almost commented on this beauty without scrolling down, but man I'm glad I didn't. The underside is half the fun! Amazing job here. The color scheme is great and the sci-fi greebly fun stuff everywhere looks awesome. The hints of trans-light blue, especially in the circular nose, are epic. And the back thrusters, with those dark red slopes, are completely wicked. Definitely a masterful MOC.

Quoting Nate Beckett A it's an award show I made. B it's a group for elite builders
Ok. So I am flattered that you want to nominate this ship for a Brickey. I like the name, by the way. As for the group, I would be happy to join, and am again honored that you consider me an elite builder. If it's a group that you're starting, send me an invite. If it's not a group that you're starting, let me know the name of the group, because I can't find EBA in the group search. Thanks again.

Quoting Darth Brickious This ship is so far of the hook cool it is making my eyes hurt:)At first glance it looks way over greebled but as you look closer you realize every single greeble is there for a reason and serves a purpose. Awesome!
Thanks, Darth. I have a tendency to look at what I have done, wonder if it is too greebled, then add some more. I like to exaggerate the greebling, so if you thought it looked over greebled, then I suppose I accomplished what I was out to accomplish. Thanks for the flattering comments.

Quoting TX-008 1998 Very nice work! This could even be an UCS LEGO set! Where did you get all those rare bricks from? Were they from LEGO sets?
Wow! UCS? That's quite a compliment. I can tell you that all of my MOCs are done with LEGO. I don't use Mega Bloks or anything else. Although, I'm not sure which bricks you're referring to as rare. Let me know which ones you're talking about and I'll let you know.

Hey I was wondering if you could help me out with something. I have some questions for you. I'm trying to start a micro build and I want it to be a space cruiser/battleship. On your battleship orion where did you start first? Thats the problem with my build is that I don't know where to start. Also I want to add as much detail onto the ship as possible (like yours). I tried to create a model earlier today but it was really blocky and it didn't flow well. How should I start and how did you add so much detail to yours? If you wouldn't mind when I finally make the ship in the description I would like to mention you and your battleship orion as something that inspired me to build my ship. Thanks Tim. -Garett

Quoting Great Lightning-Hawk Of Dawn Really neat ship!Kinda cool how something built for microscale(if I'm correct) can be so huge.I really like all the texture included plus the big wngine booster at the back.I also admire your bug use of SNOT techniques, not many use that on vehicles like this, most snot work is used on vignettes.Really impressive. Ps.I would like to know how or what program you use to make the main picture, like the space background,I'd like to learn how you do that..
Thanks for the compliments. I'm not sure what "bug" means, but I'm going to assume that it was positive;) As for the picture, nothing fancy. The background is just one of the millions of public domain photos that you can find on the internet. Google is an excellent source. I use them just to enhance the appearance of the MOC. As for the editing, good old-fashioned MS Paint. I have loved that program since my first experience with it. Kind of time-consuming, but I think the finished product is worth the time. I just hope I can figure out how make the illusion of fire or energy coming out of the thrusters. Thanks for the interest.

Thanks. Glad you like it. You'd be surprised how many micro builds there are out there two, three, four times the size, (and more), of mine. Do a search on this site for Rusty Ferret, Eye of Chaos, HMS Relentless Fire, and especially Seterra. These are some absolute monsters and well worth the look.

It is the most insane ship I've ever built. I'm afraid I have developed a fever for larger builds. Yes, it was a lot of time. Quoting LukeClarenceVan The Revanchist Wow, I'm nearly speechless. The beefiness of this immediately stood out, as did the awesome shape. The use of trans-blue pipe between the two dishes was sheer genius, and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the bridge-like areas. The greebling is placed perfectly, and not overdone. I also thought that the landing bays were very cool. One of my favourite parts of this MOC is the colouration. You've blended light/dark bley with dark red highlights flawlessly, and it's my favoured combination. This is truly a masterful creation, and one I'll surely reference if ever I try out micro space. Phenomenal work!
Thanks, Luke. I'm glad you felt so strongly about this one. I'm in complete agreement with you about the colors. That my favorite combo as well. The Slave I that's for sale now has some really useful light gray and dark red pieces in it. That's where I got the pieces for the rear thruster. Also has an excellent canopy. One I'm planning on using for a future mini build. I'm also stoked that you like the greebling. I used to be worried about overdoing it, but I love building greebled ships so much, I just stopped worrying about it. Can't wait to see your next build, by the way.

It was sick, but it got all better;) Thanks for the compliment. Glad you like the details.

Thanks. I'm all about the details, so I appreciate when someone notices it.

Quoting Eric Landreneau Great building techniques and artistry. the ship looks awesome. But I'm not a fan of the layout of the weaponry. Different classes of cannon are all clustered together, so the ship would have to roll about to bring the right weaponry to bear. Not useful if some of those turrets are meant to be anti-fighter or anti-missle. But the big nag for me is the main battery tucked away in the ship's belly, ratherthan in some more commanding position. So, hope you don't mind some constructive criticism. Like I said; aesthetics and execution are great, but the weapons loadout would hamper it in combat.
I don't mind constructive criticism in the least. In fact, I would like more of it. For instance, when I was building this ship, I paid no attention to how this ship would actually perform in live combat. Your criticism has also showed me that, considering the scale, there would be football-fields-worth of space between the different cannons, lending miles of unprotected ship for enemy craft to punish. Definitely a thought for future builds. Thanks for the compliments that were in there too. I guess I will have to keep this conglomeration of plastic building blocks out of the real action, huh? ;)

Quoting StoveTop Creator Stunning use of the dk red pieces. I love all those viewing bays too... and the GREEBLES! :)
I'm like a kid in a candy store with the greebles. I put a lot of attention into the color configuration. I also got a lot of trans-blue tiles in a recent set, so the viewing bays was another objective. I'm glad that they stood out to you. Thanks for the compliments.

Quoting Mastermind ļ Whoa!! This is one cool spaceship!! Totally 1000/5 and deserves 50 MOTDs too! Epic!
Thanks a lot, Mastermind. I always appreciate your comments. I build for the joy of building. It's a part of my childhood that escaped too quickly and I'm glad to have recaptured it. But, MOTD would be okay, too;)

Quoting A. Metzger I love it! good color and shape. did you take apart your other creations to make this? that is something i have a hard time with, taking apart my MOCs.
I take apart all my MOCs. I don't have the space to store them, nor the collection to keep building without the pieces in my latest creation. The HeavyHand and the Prowler were especially hard to disassemble, though I don't think I'll be taking apart the Orion for some time.

Quoting Achintya Prasad 70 studs may not seem a lot, but this creation's other dimensions are pretty big. Anyways, excellent MOC! 5/5
Thanks a lot for the comment, but I guess I worded it wrong in my text. I'm actually pleased with 70 studs. It's my largest build yet. It's also my first ship that I can consider 100% complete, with both the top and bottom covered.

Quoting Chris Melby I think this is the whole package. First, it's not so big you have to hang it from the ceiling, secondly, it just as detailed as something that big, and thirdly, the design and coloring is fantastic. This is one of the coolest Lego space ships around in my opinion, hats off for nailing it! Chris
Wow. Thanks. That's a huge compliment. Especially from a builder of your caliber. Though, I must admit, I wish I had the pieces in my collection to have to hang it from the ceiling. Well, enough pieces in my collection AND a wife that would be okay with a LEGO spaceship hanging from her ceiling;) I would need that, too. At least for now she's ok with plastic drawers in her living room. I'll work on the rest. Thanks for the kind words.

Thanks. Glad you like it. The round bridge was the idea that gave birth to the rest of the ship.

Quoting Cody G Overall, it's got a pretty chunky shape, but that's what gives it a personality. Excellent work on the details!
Chunky just seems to be what I do. I had intentions with a few of my past ships to attempt something a little more sleek and elegant, but they always came out "chunky." So, I've just come to embrace this style. Not to say I won't continue to try to build smoother ships. Thanks for the comment.

Wow, I'm nearly speechless.

Thanks a lot David. This was a lot of fun to build and as I mentioned in the intro, I wouldn't have done it without your invite. Oh, and there aren't many builders on this site like Jon B. I tried not to directly steal any of his ideas, but his builds are pure inspiration. Thanks for noticing the main cockpit. I 've been trying to find a use for the long blue tube that comes with the Falcon and I like how it turned out. I can't wait to see what you come up with if you're going to go after a build like this. The big LEGO reunion is coming up soon, isn't it?

Oh my that was worth waiting for. The scale of the thing is impressive - I've got to man-up and attempt something similar. I can see you've paid close attention to John B's epic ships - the techniques are there. Overall the ship looks bulky and imposing, the landscape shots capture this well. I especially like the repetition of circular greebling elements, its a nice touch and gives a good stylistic coherence to the whole build. I 'd also just like to note that the main cockpit and the gun turrets are really cool. I'm blown away, top-end building here Tim.
