Six months in the making, I present my largest creation to date: a 1x1x1 foot model of M.C. Escher's print "Relativity" reenacted in the Lego Star Wars theme. A far larger, cleaner, and more detailed rehashing of my 2010 version, this diorama is fully lit from the inside, presents the original Star Wars trilogy in a roughly counterclockwise format, and even features a minifig-scale theatre in the back which plays Lego's CG version of the Star Wars saga. Enjoy!
About this creation

This is Escher's original mind bending work from 1953.

And this is my version in all it's hi-res awesomeness. I attempted to stay as true as possible to the geometry and proportions of Esher's work, while bringing in the colors, worlds, and characters of Star Wars, and the freshness of the Lego medium. Unlike my first version of this concept, this diorama was not built solely for the finished replication photograph. This diorama has many details and scenes not completely visible in the finished picture. Take a look at some of these scenes and details below!

This scene, near the "ceiling" of the diorama, is a caricature of Mos Eisely. The light tan and curves give a very Tatooine-ish look to this portion of Escher's work. Thanks to Max Pointner for mailing me Greedo's head to finish off the diorama. For the record, Han shot first.

A storm trooper paces the desert in search of two droids.

Also on the ceiling of the dio, we see Obi Wan Kenobi scuttling off down a walkway after disabling the tractor beam.

Reminiscent of the famous duel on Bespin, this element of the dio turns a balcony in Escher's work into the Cloud City wind vane where Luke Skywalker learns of his parentage.

Luke's lightsaber and hand both tumble down… or is it up?

Greebles!

The Endor scene, complete with foliage and Ewoks. Retro Ewoks from 2002.

C-3PO, dismayed as always.

Emperor Palpatine in his throne room. This scene, purposefully at the center of the diorama, is representative of the central evil around which the galactic war is waged.

The ridiculously parts-intensive Death Star wall detailing.

The Hoth scene, complete with Tauntaun.

I am almost most proud of the back of the diorama. All the light bley I needed to buy to finish off this not-so important part has convinced me that I will officially turn to the castle genre for a while once Relativity is dismantled. This angle also shows the lighting access doors and the built-in theatre.

These handsome chaps have joined my signature fig in the back row to watch Lego Star Wars. Ian and Max are both good friends of mine in "real" life. Using a second generation iPod touch, I have managed to loop ten minutes of the Lego Star Wars video game cutscenes into a nice little show.

Seven lights illuminate the model from the inside.

And at last, a size representation. I do believe this is the first time I have posted a photograph of myself.
With any luck, this will be displayed at the 2012 Chicago Brickworld, so stop by and see it in person!
Thanks for stopping by, and Soli Deo Gloria!

J Duck outlines a truly important question; if this tremendous feat of a creation has been dismantled, I feel sorry for the future generations who will not be able to witness such awesomeness in person. This is the kind of creation you keep with you until you can give it to your grandchildren! Excellently done.

Paul,
So what is the verdict? Did you dismantle it for parts or keep it intact to sell or display?
(If it has been dismantled, let me be the first to quote Obi-Wan: "I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.") |

Mind boggling. Absolutely mind boggling. My eyes are bugging out of my skull. This is AMAZING. Perfect. Entirely flawless. This creation is awesome, every detail blowing away my mind. This scene is awesome, and I love how you included the scenes from real scenes from the STAR WARS movies. The scenes are perfect. The theater is just as cool, and how you managed to include every scene I like, as well as most of the model being on its side, I have no idea. As I said earlier, mind boggling. This scene is SO cool. You rock at every theme of LEGO, and this is proof that you are an amazing builder. Once again, flawless job! |

DO NOT DISMANTLE!!! This is a piece of art that encapsulates 2 pop culture icons of the 20th century, (STAR WARS/ESCHER), and therefore is desirable to many buyers. My humble recommendation as an artist: sell it and use the profit to buy materials for future works. Dismantling it will only cause regret in the future. Yes you could always rebuild it but it is unlikely considering the time/effort/money involved. Plus your creativity will force you to lose any aspirations for reconstruction. |

With all the publicity, I am sure you could sell it in one piece for more than enough to replace your lego stash. Lego art should usually be recycled, but there are some exceptions, and this is one (Folks out there - correct me if I am wrong!) But either way, be sure to include photos of this on your college applications. Design, art and engineering programs look for the sort of minds that can not only take concepts from idea to reality, but also those who can combine existing ideas, add a spark, and create something new. Plus all the "value-added" features like the cinema and the lighting. |

Dismantle? Do not dismantle!!!
Get a new collection, somehow. You could probably actually sell it for a bunch of money. Maybe not 2 million, but for sure enough to buy all these parts plus a ton ton ton more. Then some other nerd can enjoy it just as much as you did building it. Think of the market. Escher fans, lego fans, Star Wars fans. Put it up on eBay for three times what the bricks cost or something and watch the bidding wars begin.
Oh, and when I say "some other nerd" I mean nerd in a good way, as I'm one too and proud of it.
Hats off to you not only for creating this epically awesome thing (love legos, love star wars, and for sure love Escher), but also you seem highly intelligent beyond your years.

That's about as cool as anything can be without having weapons or a V8 engine... and this is from a guy who hasn't touched a Lego in 30 years.
Hold off on the dismantle as long as possible, because SURELY some SW collector will offer you enough money to replace the bricks, plus some profit. And you'll want to show your kids some day, too. |

Dude, this is amazing. You have created a true work of art out of simple building blocks and your imagination. It's clean, detailed, fun, and very accurate. So why are you going to take it apart? I understand the problems of having a small lego collection and the need to recycle pieces. But seriously, if your creation makes it to the front page of yahoo, don't you think it's worth it to live with a smaller lego collection and an awesome model, rather than a bunch of lego pieces and only some photos and memories. It took you six months to make this, don't ruin that hard work by taking it all down.
Keep building. I (and the rest of the world) look forward to your next inspiration! |

Don't dismantle it. Sell it!!! This is art and should be forever not ephemeral. Asking price starts at $2,000,000. Payable by check or credit card.

What do you mean by "once Relativity is dismantled"?!! Seriously, you should not dismantle it - ever. Ten years from now, you don't want to be telling someone "I made an awesome Escher/Star Wars diorama but I can't show it to you because I dismantled it."
Haha. If nobody goes for the $2,000,000 thing, I think dismantling will be my only option. A large portion of my collection was used up in this MOC, so I'll have to recycle it (as I do with all my other creations) to make something even bigger and better next time.

What do you mean by "once Relativity is dismantled"?!! Seriously, you should not dismantle it - ever. Ten years from now, you don't want to be telling someone "I made an awesome Escher/Star Wars diorama but I can't show it to you because I dismantled it."

Truly EPIC work here, man. The concept alone is such a winner, and your execution conveys a sense of real Lego magic with this stunning dio. The theater is terminally hip, and Luke's hand and lightsaber falling down(?) the shaft is a brilliant way to capture this moment from the saga. Without a doubt, this creation surpasses the scope of our common numerical ratings system on the 'Pages, and can only be regarded an instant CLASSIC. MC himself could only be proud. - Huss Q. |

The lights just add to the stunning effect! How do you get the minifigures to stay sideways, upside down, and all? I mean, if they are running, then wouldn't they be held only by one stud? That is amazing that you can make them stick! Great work! YOUR best moc ever! (By the way, YOU LOOK SO MUCH LIKE MAX! At first, I thought it was Max holding the creation without his glasses, but when I read the caption and looked more closely, it was not! It was the one and only Paul Vermeesch!) Amazing creation and Keep up the superb work! Thanks for the comment, Matthew! Most of the minifigures, If not attached by a stud, are attached by technic half pins in the bottoms or backs of their legs. The tauntaun is attached with technic pins as are C-3PO, and Leah. As to my resemblance to Max, it's been that way since we were toddlers. Rather scary.

Dude, this is brilliant! Every detail/scene is nicely represented here. The lights add SO much more to the build, as well. How about some more detail shots with the lights on (or off)? I took your comment on my last version to heart and tried to add more detail shots than I did previously. You're just a tough one to please! :-) |

BRILLIANT!!! Absolutely magnificent. The ultimate, "Does it blend!" You have combined two of my favorite things, Star Wars and Escher. I like all the different aspects of the movies that you incorporated here, and the minifigs running around in pure defiance of gravity is simply fantastic. Well done, sir! The answer to the eternal "does it blend" question is always "Yes. If the blender has sharp enough blades and is turned on high."

Totally awesome Paul! The lighting really worked well! I am so glad this worked! My favorite detail is the two conduit pipes connecting the Hoth and Mos Eisley sewers. Your sand modeling on the top left is also very well done! I would go on, but I think you get the point: DETAIL IS NOT MORE IMPORTANT THAN CONTEXT... well, I won't embarrass myself. Yay Max! Its a rare thing these days to find a Star Wars MOC that ascends above the sea of redundant subjects and mediocre constructions. This rises to the challenge magnificently! I hope you do bring it to BW for the masses to enjoy. And it will certainly be deserving of any accolades it receives! Great work! Thank you! That means a lot!

This is the cleverest MOC I've seen in a while! You should make more of these from other themes. I think I'll leave that to the rest of the Lego community. I'll be burned out for a while on Escher stuff. Some "normal" building should be nice for a change.
Quoting Grace Pointner
I can't believe you actually put an ipod touch in there!!!! Are you going to have it playing at brick world? I am guessing you are because it is just epic. I can't wait to see it in real life!!!!
