Separatist/Techno-Union OCTUPTARRA 'Magna' Tri-Droid
at last, pics of my 'still-in-progress' MAGNA TRI-DROID! i'd be extra-happy with any constructive comments . . . this is now on CUUSOO as a Christophsis Set, along with an LR-57 RETAIL DROID and suggestions for a new minifig. check it out!
About this creation

the aim was threefold. make it:

1. Self-supporting (no stands etc.)
2. Adjustable (ie: 'some' variation in the legs/guns/head etc)
3. To-Scale (ie: HUGE)

my MAGNA Tri-Droid stands 36cm (14") tall and is 51cm (20") across. The minifig standing in the pics is a standard Super Battle Droid . . .

i know some people don't like dishes-made-into-a-sphere, but i do and here it plays an important structural element as it reduces the weight the legs have to support. i wanted the legs to be as 'slender' as possible. they're 1 brick wide, which i think is quite a feat.

TLC doesn't make ANY dishes in Blue, which is quite irritating, so i've tried a number of options to get close to the CIS colour scheme seen on Christophsis. one uses the radar-grid on 2 plain grey dishes, another uses printed dishes (TIE advanced/Sith Infiltrator) and another uses the large, semi-transparent printed dishes from Grievous's Wheel Bike. not sure which i prefer yet.

You my friend have the best tri droid on the internet. It have has very accurate legs and it can free stand by itself! Mind if I borrow the leg idea?

Quoting MCLegoboy ! I just discovered something. I just supported this on Cussoo (I thought I already did but that must have been something else of yours.) and I discovered that if your idea does reach 10,000 supports, I think LEGO will have a problem with the size and they will scale it down a tad, but this is where I made my discovery. Lego now has the Planet Sets and they could use the molds on those for a perfect sphere on the top. Although there is no purist way to get the design right on the head, I think you should do some experimenting with the idea and see how it turns out. The planet mold would theoretically fit almost snug in the interior of the head of your design if it did not need that structure from the inside, just so you can get an idea of what I am talking about on the scaling down portion. The Separatist Spider Droid from 2008 is an abomination when it comes to scale, but I am just sharing how LEGO may take your idea and turn it into their design if it were to make the distance pass review.
. . . it's not a bad idea. i agree that IF Lego did run with this, they'd scale it down a bit and probably wouldn't like the 'dish-built' head either. if i get time i'll maybe try it out . . . thanks.

Quoting Jesse Branch Hey Awesome Droids, I've been waiting for a decent Tri-Droid to appear but nothing comes up. Your Tri, Crab, and Retail Droids are perfect. I would very much like to incorporate them into my collection Ive had since 1999. Do you think you can find it in your heart to pass the directions for the 3 droids to me? PLZ.
hej, the Tri-Droid is still a bit of a 'work-in-progress' and i'm afraid i don't do instructions, however i do make & sell my models to collectors. if you want a Retail Droid/Crab Droid i can make one. let me know

Quoting Calvin . But aren't they supposed to be huge? If you've seen star wars the clone wars episode number 1 it's HUGE. So I wouldn't blame you for that.
hej Calvin - what? you don't think this is HUGE enough? i know scale with these things is notoriously difficult to agree on but according to the info i can find online my Tri-Droid is almost exactly as 'huge' as its supposed to be . . . it's actually smaller than i first planned!

Quoting Unknown Jedi I had the same issue with the lack of blue dishes when working on my blue MTT http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/265234. In the end, I used home-made laser printer decals on grey dishes. I think I might try an octuparra based on your design (which I love) but using this approach. A decent octuparra has been one of my desires for a long time.
hey, yeah - i saw that dish . . . looks great! i was thinking that if TLG got around to producing a Tri-Droid they could do some nice Dishes with a printed design - Blue on Grey'd be fine. look forward to seeing yours . . .

Quoting Mando Verd Wow! Put that on Cuusoo and I'll defiantly vote for it. I'm amazed and disappointed that Lego hasn't made an Octuptarra (is that how it's spelled, I can't remember.) droid already.
thanx for the encouragement! the whole Octuptarra thing is actually a bit confusing - i 'think' this is a Tri-Droid (a massively scaled version of the Octuptarra, which is a smaller version) i've made some small Octuptarra's too as part of an Utapau Battle Set, already on Cuusoo . . . check it out!

Quoting Scott Allen Cool. Would be a neat set. I remember these having eyes on each of the 3 sides, kinda like the spider dwarfs. I could be mistaken. For figs, 2x super battle droids, and a jedi. Annie is over used, but he is good at slicing these up. Lol. Good luck on cuusoo. I would buy it, so I'll support it. ~cheers
thanx - i 'think' the eyes are the sensors located above the 3 guns (but i could also be mistaken). as for figs - i was planning to suggest a couple of Super Battle Droids + a NEW fig, Separatist General Whorm Loathsom! Anakin is definately overused . . . i can't imagine anyone doesn't have him already.
